TNT has given a 10 episode order to the supernatural drama Proof starring Jennifer Beals and executive produced by Kyra Sedgwick, Rob Bragin, Tom Jacobson, Jill Littman, and Alex Graves. Graves also directed the pilot from a script by Bragin.

In addition to Beals, Proof‘s cast includes Matthew Modine, Joe Morton, Callum Blue, Edi Gathegi, Annie Thurman, Sean Gleeson, and Caroline Rose Kaplan.

Proof is a fascinating series that takes on one of our most compelling questions: What happens when we die?” said Michael Wright, president, head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM). “Jennifer Beals does a terrific job bringing her complex character to life, and she’s surrounded by an outstanding ensemble cast. We’re especially thrilled to be collaborating once again with Kyra Sedgwick, whose work on The Closer helped pave the way for TNT’s ever-growing slate of hit original series.”

Proof will arrive in 2015.

The Plot:

In Proof, Beals plays Dr. Carolyn Tyler, a brilliant surgeon with a caustic edge. Carolyn has suffered the recent, devastating loss of her teenage son, the breakup of her marriage to Dr. Len Barliss (Gleeson) and a growing estrangement from their daughter (Thurman). But Carolyn’s own trauma hasn’t deterred her from her charitable outreaches, which include helping disaster victims in far-flung trouble spots throughout the world.

Despite her skeptical, hard-science attitude, Carolyn is persuaded by a cancer-stricken tech millionaire (Modine) to investigate cases of reincarnation, out-of-body experiences, hauntings and other supernatural phenomena. Her goal is to find verifiable proof to life’s greatest questions: Is death truly the end, or is there something else beyond?

Helping – or sometimes hindering – Carolyn in her quest are her boss, Dr. Charles Russell (Morton), the head of the hospital, and Peter Van Owen (Blue), a best-selling author who claims to be psychic. Gathegi plays Zed, a hospital intern from the Sudan who assists Carolyn, and Kaplan plays Janel Ramsey, Turing’s assistant.

Richard Armitage (The Hobbit trilogy) and Max Deacon joined their co-stars Arlen Escarpeta and Jeremy Sumpter along with Into the Storm director Steven Quale at the 2014 WonderCon to show off footage from the upcoming disaster film set to hit theaters on August 8th. The Into the Storm cast also hit the red carpet to chat up the Warner Bros Pictures action-filled thriller, answering questions including what they would grab if a tornado hit.

Richard Armitage and Max Deacon Interview

What would be the most ridiculous pun to use to get people excited about this movie?

Max Deacon: “You know what I’ve just been stoked about is that no one’s brought up sharks. No one said anything about sharks yet. I’m really excited people seem to be taking it more seriously. It’s nice.”

There are no flying sharks in this movie, right?

Max Deacon: “Thank you very much. There’s no sharks in the film.”

Coming to WonderCon means you’ll be showing off trailers and scenes from the movie. Do you ever wish that people wouldn’t watch the trailers and just see the movies fresh?

Richard Armitage: “Do you know what I think is with this genre of movie there’s something about an incredible trailer that such a tempting thing to watch that will get people into the cinema. They’ve done a great job because they’ve captured the best of the film without revealing too much of it. I always find a great trailer like that is quite compelling.”

Max Deacon: “I think that’s the danger. I think we’ve all seen things where, ‘Oh, that’s the film.’ I was excited to see [our trailer] because I knew that they had cut together something special from the amazing stuff we have in the movie.”

If a tornado was coming toward your house right now and you were trying to save yourself, what items would you take with you?

Richard Armitage: “What items would you take with you, Max?”

Max Deacon: “Thank you so much! What stuff? I’d take my dog – I’d do that. I’d have to save the dog, that would be the first thing, and my little brother.”

Richard Armitage: “I’d probably go and grab my mom. If I had a dog, I’d grab that.”

Probably?

Richard Armitage: [Laughing] “Well you can’t tell until it happens to you.”

Max Deacon: “He’s a hero in the film but we’re saying in real life, cowardly. Straight out.”

Richard Armitage: “It depends on where I am at the time. If I was alone I’d take absolutely nothing but my underpants.”

Max Deacon: “I learned recently…we had the earthquake out here recently – that’s my first one. I found out that I…”

Richard Armitage: “Did you run?”

Max Deacon: “No, I didn’t. I woke up and I went, ‘Oh, I’m in an earthquake. I guess this is it.'”

How would you summarize the movie to get everybody pumped up about seeing it?

Richard Armitage: “What’s pumped to me about this film is the amount of practical effects that we were able to do onsite, on set, on location, out on the street. And that blended together with some incredible CGI from Steve Quale who’s worked with Jim Cameron who’s the master of great special effects, I think putting those two things together makes for a really kind of exciting, incredible film.”

Music Spotlight: “Dare (La La La)” by Shakira

Shakira Dare Music Video

The official music video for “Dare (La La La)” off of Shakira’s new self-titled album is now online, and it’s not up to Shakira’s normal standards. The “Dare” video doesn’t tell much of a story and plays out more like a series of random shots that all lead up to a huge dance number at the end for no real rhyme or reason.

Zac Efron, Seth Rogen, and Jimmy Fallon Dress as Girls for ‘Ew!’

Jimmy Fallon’s made-up Teen Nick show Ew! returns with special guests Seth Rogen (who looks horrible as a girl) and Zac Efron (who looks, well, not quite as bad as Rogen as a female). The threesome take selfies while seated on the Ew! couch and then decide to get up and dance – a disturbing sight that fortunately doesn’t last long.

Efron and Rogen were on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in support of the May 9, 2014 release of the R-rated comedy, Neighbors.

Power Rangers are Heading to the Big Screen in a Live Action Film

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Movie

Remember the Power Rangers? If you do, then you’ll be happy to know that a Power Rangers live-action feature film is in the works from Lionsgate Films and Saban Brands. The original action film will, according to Lionsgate and Saban Brands, “re-envision the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of high school kids who are infused with unique and cool superpowers but must harness and use those powers as a team if they have any hope of saving the world.”

“Lionsgate is the perfect home for elevating our Power Rangers brand to the next level,” said Saban. “They have the vision, marketing prowess and incredible track record in launching breakthrough hits from The Hunger Games to Twilight and Divergent. In partnership with the Lionsgate team, we’re confident that we will capture the world of the Power Rangers and translate it into a unique and memorable motion picture phenomenon with a legacy all its own.”

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Haim Saban and his team to maximize the potential of this immensely successful and universally recognized franchise,” said Lionsgate Chief Executive Officer Jon Feltheimer. “The Power Rangers stories and characters have been embraced by generations of audiences for more than 20 years, and today they are more powerful than ever. We have the ideal partner and the perfect brand with which to create a motion picture event that will resonate with moviegoers around the world for years to come.”

It’s too early in the process to announce the writer, director, or cast, and Lionsgate also hasn’t announced when we can expect to see Power Rangers in theaters. The original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers hit TV screens 20 years ago as a live-action series. Since then, it’s spawned toys, costumes, video games, and other Power Rangers merchandise.

Movie Review: ‘Moms’ Night Out’

Moms' Night Out Movie Review

Reviewed by Rebecca Murray

What happens when a mommy blogger who’s fanatical about housework and obsessed with watching a live stream of an eagle cam decides she needs one Saturday night out with the ladies and away from her kids and her nearly always absent hubby? In Moms’ Night Out, the answer is an evening of pure chaos that includes the accidental death of a family bird, the misplacement of a baby, and time spent in jail. No, this isn’t a female version of The Hangover; it’s more of a twisted Adventures in Babysitting where the teenager in charge is replaced with a harried mother who doesn’t believe in herself and is constantly second-guessing her mothering skills.

It’s wacky fun rather than raunchy and its PG rating makes Moms’ Night Out pretty safe for all audiences. The moms at the center of the story are a sweet group, and it’s obvious from the opening scenes that everything is going to turn out okay, lessons will be learned, and doubts will be put aside as all involved will emerge stronger and happier in the end.

The cast is led by Sarah Drew (Grey’s Anatomy) who plays Allyson, the neat freak stay-at-home mom who sees danger in the most innocent of household situations and is sure she’s a failure at being a mother. Sarah’s hubby (played by Sean Astin) encourages her to put aside all of her responsibilities, turn one night of taking care of the kids over to him, and go out and party with her closest friends. Although she’s worried she’s letting the family down, Sarah commits to one evening in which she’ll venture out without a cellphone and without needing to hold little hands.

Allyson’s plans for an evening of adult conversation during a nice dinner she doesn’t have to cook immediately hit a snag when she’s told by a snooty female maître’ d that her reservations at the trendy restaurant are actually for the following Saturday night. From there the evening hits speed bump after speed bump until she and her mommy buddies ultimately land in the slammer following a car chase and a run-in with the police in which Sondra (Patricia Heaton playing a responsible preacher’s wife) is tazed.

Moms’ Night Out, directed Andrew and Jon Erwin, is the latest in the string of family-friendly, faith-based releases to hit theaters, but while religion is brought up it’s integrated into the story in such a way as to not feel heavy-handed. It’s light, fluffy fare with a positive message delivered by a likable cast. And while it’s not believable as the evening escalates into over-the-top antics, there are enough genuinely relatable scenes to make it an enjoyable experience for moviegoers who like their comedies on the sweet side.

GRADE: B-

Moms’ Night Out opens in theaters on May 9, 2014 and is rated PG for mild thematic elements and some action.
