By Kevin Finnerty

As the weather begins to heat up and people break out the suntan lotion, head to the beaches, and heat up the barbecue, it’s time to head to the multiplex for the big summer blockbusters, which of course means it’s also time once again for the Big Summer Movie Preview. This year a web-slinging hero faces his greatest foes yet, the world faces a very large and angry lizard, young love blooms in the oddest of places, and a group of friendly dragons return to the big screen.

MAY

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 (May 1) – Starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, and Jamie Foxx

Plot: Peter Parker aka Spider-Man is really beginning to enjoy being a super hero and fighting crime but he’s about to take on the worst enemies to date Electro and The Green Goblin while trying to date and keep safe his beloved Gwen Stacy.

Outlook: Based on a few unimpressive teaser trailers The Amazing Spider-Man 2 might not be so amazing after all. However, fans of this superhero franchise are likely to check out the new Spidey film no matter what the critics are saying. On the plus side, not all critics are blasting the film with The Hollywood Reporter’s critic saying it’s “emotionally weightier and more satisfying” than the first Amazing Spider-Man. But, that critic is definitely in the minority.

NEIGHBORS (May 9) – Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, and Rose Byrne

Plot: Parents of a new baby find their neighborhood invaded by a fraternity that’s out to set a record for partying.

Outlook: Neighbors could be this year’s This Is The End: a wild, rowdy ride that’s hilarious.

GODZILLA (May 16) – Starring Aaron Johnson-Taylor, Bryan Cranston, and Elizabeth Olsen

Godzilla Movie PosterPlot: Japan’s most famous giant monster takes on some new evil creatures while also battling mankind in this big budget remake of the 1956 original film.

Outlook: With two very impressive trailers which only provided brief glimpses of the gigantic beast – and with Bryan Cranston as the lead scientist = this hopefully will be the best Godzilla film of them all. Godzilla’s one of the most buzzed-about films of 2014 and there’s every reason to believe it will live up to its pre-release hype.

MILLION DOLLAR ARM (May 16) – Starring Jon Hamm and Alan Arkin

Plot: A sports agent desperate to save his business goes to India to find cricket players he can turn into first rate Major League Baseball players.

Outlook: It’s Jerry Maguire goes to India…yawn. The only thing that might save this from being a disposable ‘inspirational’ sports movie is the appealing Jon Hamm in the lead role.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST (May 23) – Starring Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Ian McKellen, and Patrick Stewart

Plot: Wolverine is sent back in time to try to prevent an event which, if it takes place, will mean certain doom for both humans and mutants.

Outlook: It’s basically X-Men: Back to the Future with Wolverine instead of Marty McFly and Professor Xavier instead of Doc Brown. All that’s missing is the cool Delorean and the time-flex capacitor.

A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST (May 30) – Starring Seth MacFarlane and Charlize Theron

Plot: A dumb and cowardly farmer begins to fall for the beautiful and mysterious new woman in town, a budding relationship results that becomes deadly complicated when her gun-slinging husband shows up.

Outlook: After doing a so-so job of hosting the Oscars a few years ago and a terrific job of bringing an R-rated, trashing-talking bear to life on the screen, MacFarlane seems to think he’s ready to take on the Wild West. Here’s hoping he’s right.

MALEFICENT (May 30) – Starring Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning

Plot: The classic Sleeping Beauty fairy tale is told this time from the villain’s point of view and chronicles the events that lead up to the evil Maleficent cursing the young innocent Princess Aurora.

Outlook: With strong casting, impressive special effects, and amazing set design, this re-imagining of an old classic might just become a classic all on its own.

JUNE

EDGE OF TOMORROW (June 6) – Starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt

Plot: Set in the future, a soldier finds himself caught in a time loop, fighting aliens, getting killed, and brought back to life only to continue to repeat his last day on earth.

Outlook: It’s Groundhog’s Day meets Starship Troopers. There’s a real deja vu feel to this film that has nothing to do with the premise and everything to do with the been-there/done-that feel of the trailers.

THE FAULT IN OUR STARS (June 6) – Starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort

Fault in Our Stars Tumblr ContestPlot: Two teenagers who seem perfect for each other and fall crazy in love meet at a cancer support group.

Outlook: Shailene Woodley is quickly becoming America’s new teen sweetheart and if the film has the right balance of humor, sweetness, and darkness, she might just graduate to Hollywood’s newest young leading lady. The Fault in Our Stars has a passionate built-in fan base as the book is a must-read for young adults who’ve embraced the trailers as getting the tone spot-on.

22 JUMP STREET (June 13) – Starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum

Plot: After their successful undercover job posing as high schoolers, Jenko and Schmidt face an even bigger challenge this time out: college.

Outlook: Here’s hoping that a bigger, louder, and more expensive sequel means even bigger laughs.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 (June 13) – Starring Jay Baruchel and Gerard Butler

Plot: It’s been five years since Hiccup and Toothless united the Dragons and Vikings on the Island of Berth. While together soaring the skies looking for new worlds, the two friends come across a new enemy who could threaten everything they have built back home.

Outlook: With wonderful animation, all the voice talent back in place, and a few new ones (including Cate Blanchett), this is sure to be the summer sequel to beat this year.

JERSEY BOYS (June 20) – Starring John Lloyd Young and Christopher Walken

Plot: The story of four young men from the wrong side of New Jersey who in the 1960s formed the great rock and pop group The Four Seasons.

Outlook: With Clint Eastwood directing and Christopher Walken co-starring, this is likely to be 2014’s biggest musical (not that it has all that much competition in the musical genre this year).

TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION (June 27) – Starring Mark Wahlberg and CGI Effects

Plot: An automobile mechanic and his daughter discover a secr…OH PLEASE! It’s explosions, terrible dialogue, more explosions, and more dumb dialogue.

Outlook: Here’s wishing this franchise would do exactly what is in the film’s title and go EXTINCT.

JULY

BEGIN AGAIN (July 4) – Starring Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo

Plot: A failing music producer meets and becomes a friend of a singer-songwriter new to Manhattan.

Outlook: If the chemistry is right, Begin Again could snag the title of best romantic comedy (with drama mixed in, of course) of the year.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Caesar Poster
Poster of Caesar in 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes'
DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (July 11) – Starring Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, Gary Oldman, and Andy Serkis

Plot: Led by the genetically altered and enhanced ape, Caesar, the growing army of apes plan war on the remaining humans who survived the world-wide devastating virus a decade earlier.

Outlook: With a stronger cast, excellent CGI effects, and a much better storyline, this sequel is sure to surpass its predecessor and might be the best Ape film since the very first Planet of the Apes back in 1968.

JUPITER ASCENDING (July 18) – Starring Channing Tatumand Mila Kunis

Plot: In the future a down-on-her-luck woman discovers she might be destined for great things in the universe when she meets an Ex-Military hunter named Cain.

Outlook: With the Wachowskis at the helm, Jupiter Ascending appears to be aiming to be the new Star Wars. Hopefully it doesn’t end up actually being closer to being the new Dune.

THE PURGE: ANARCHY (July 18) – Starring Zach Gilford and Michael K. Williams

Plot: A young couple fight to survive the night of legal murder and rape when their car breaks down.

Outlook: Is it possible this one will be even worse than the first film?

A MOST WANTED MAN (July 25) – Starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Rachel McAdams

Plot: A Muslim illegally immigrates to Hamburg and gets caught up in the international war on terror.

Outlook: With a strong cast and this being Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s last film before his tragic untimely death, it’s sure to draw a big audience.

HERCULES (July 25) – Starring Dwayne Johnson, Ian McShane, and Rufus Sewell

Plot: Hercules must battle many enemies to take down a warlord.

Outlook: With horrible CGI in the first trailer and unimpressive action scenes, Dwayne Johnnson might not be a big enough draw to make this one earn back its budget at the box office.

SEX TAPE (July 25) – Starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel

Plot: A married couple wake up one morning to discover to their horror that the sex tape they made the night before is missing, which sets off a frantic search to find it.

Outlook: It’s an episode of Mad About You for the big screen and something tells this critic I’ve already seen the funnier version. However, Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel had great chemistry in Bad Teacher so maybe the trailers just aren’t doing this comedy justice.

AUGUST

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (August 1) – Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Vin Diesel

Chris Pratt Interview
Chris Pratt stars in 'Guardians of the Galaxy' (Photo ©Marvel 2014)
Plot: An American pilot finds himself the focus of a manhunt in space when he steals an orb which the treacherous Ronan desires.

Outlook: Based on the trailers, this will be the strangest Marvel film to date, with a tone that’s more comedic than any other movie released by Marvel Studios. Whether audiences will go for this group of oddball heroes is a tough call at this point. The trailers have been well received, but Guardians of the Galaxy is an unknown property to moviegoers not well-versed in the world of comic books.

WHAT IF (August 1) – Starring Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan

Plot: Two singles meet at a party and have instant chemistry but one is just getting over a serious relationship and the other is in one, so they struggle to be just friends.

Outlook: If the chemistry is right, it could be the perfect movie for a date night.

LUCY (August 8 ) – Starring Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman

Plot: A woman caught up in a dark deal ends up turning the tides on her captors and begins to evolve into a killing machine.

Outlook: Who doesn’t want to watch Scarlett Johansson kick-ass?!

THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY (August 8 ) – Starring Helen Mirren and Manish Dayal

Plot: An Indian family moves to France and opens a restaurant across the street from a Michelin-starred French restaurant.

Outlook: Could be the sleeper hit of the summer, and it’s one of the few films coming to theaters during the hot summer months that’s aimed at an older audience.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES (August 8 ) – Starring Megan Fox and Will Arnett

Plot: The four teen sword-wielding turtles are back to fight evil in Manhattan.

Outlook: There are some franchises that should never resurface. This is one of them.

THE EXPENDABLES 3 (August 15) – Starring Sylvester Stallone and Every Action Actor on the Planet

Plot: Barney and the rest of the team come face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks, the original co-founder of the Expendables who turned on Barney and now wants to destroy the rest of the team.

Outlook: With a great list of action stars including Mel Gibson, Sly, Ford, and Jason Statham, even bigger and louder explosions, chases, shootouts, Expendables 3 will likely be one of this summer’s bigger action movies.

FRANK MILLER’S SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR (August 22) – Starring Josh Brolin, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Jessica Alba

Plot: Four new vignettes focusing on a PI, a femme fatale, and an exotic dancer.

Outlook: Edgy, dark, gritty and seedy, it’s the long-anticipated sequel that might just be better than the first film.

IF I STAY (August 22) – Starring Chloe Grace Moretz and Jamie Blackley

Plot: Mia Hall had it all: a loving family, a great boyfriend, and a chance at a scholarship to Juilliard, and then a car accident claims her family and leaves her in a coma between life and death. She’s left with the ultimate decision…to join her family in the after-life or to stay.

Outlook: Based on the bestselling novel of the same name, If I Stay‘s trailer has book fans happy as it appears the adaptation to the screen remains faithful to the popular novel.

WHEN THE GAME STANDS TALL (August 22) – Starring Jim Caviezel and Laura Dern

Plot: Inspired by a true story, When the Game Stands Tall focuses on legendary football coach Bob Ladouceur who took the awful De La Salle High School Spartans to a 151 game winning streak.

Outlook: With a great actor in the lead, this character-driven sports film may draw in even those who aren’t into football.

Lucasfilm Says ‘Star Wars’ Movies Won’t Involve the Expanded Universe

Star Wars Expanded Universe News

Star Wars fans who’ve been wondering if the new films will incorporate any elements (characters, storylines, etc.) from the ‘Expanded Universe’ now have their official answer. Lucasfilm released a statement saying that the Expanded Universe is not a part of the new film series and the Star Wars universe is officially made up of just the six films, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and the upcoming Star Wars Rebels animated series. From now on, all content from the Expanded Universe will be presented under the newly created banner “Legends.”

The official announcement in part reads:

“For over 35 years, the Expanded Universe has enriched the Star Wars experience for fans seeking to continue the adventure beyond what is seen on the screen. When he created Star Wars, George Lucas built a universe that sparked the imagination, and inspired others to create. He opened up that universe to be a creative space for other people to tell their own tales. This became the Expanded Universe, or EU, of comics, novels, videogames, and more.

While Lucasfilm always strived to keep the stories created for the EU consistent with our film and television content as well as internally consistent, Lucas always made it clear that he was not beholden to the EU. He set the films he created as the canon. This includes the six Star Wars episodes, and the many hours of content he developed and produced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. These stories are the immovable objects of Star Wars history, the characters, and events to which all other tales must align.

Now, with an exciting future filled with new cinematic installments of Star Wars, all aspects of Star Wars storytelling moving forward will be connected. Under Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy’s direction, the company for the first time ever has formed a story group to oversee and coordinate all Star Wars creative development.”

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said, “We have an unprecedented slate of new Star Wars entertainment on the horizon. We’re set to bring Star Wars back to the big screen, and continue the adventure through games, books, comics, and new formats that are just emerging. This future of interconnected storytelling will allow fans to explore this galaxy in deeper ways than ever before.”

Eliza Taylor on ‘The 100’ and Playing Clarke

Eliza Taylor The 100 Interview

Before The CW’s The 100 cast took to the stage in front of fans at the 2014 WonderCon, the gorgeous Eliza Taylor sat down to chat about her character in the dramatic sci-fi series. Taylor revealed she’s happy Clarke’s a leader of the group and that she has complicated relationships with just about everyone on the series, including her mother. She also talked about what fans can expect from the big season one finale.

Eliza Taylor Interview

Do you want to see a point where Clarke’s decisions aren’t questioned?

Eliza Taylor: “When I first signed up for the show, I was really worried that I was going to be that character that people would [groan about] because she’s so serious and wants to get things done. The rest of the characters have a bit of a sense of humor about them. But the response has actually been really, really great. I’m really happy about that. Something that I did kind of fear I now really love about her. I think that she should keep that mentality. She’s the only one on the show who has it. She’s kind of holding it together. I’m all for it.

When I get a scene where I smile, it’s amazing. I’m like, ‘Oh my god she laughs in this scene!’ That just doesn’t happen very often so it makes it more special.”

Will we see more of the different sides of her, including a softer side?

Eliza Taylor: “I love the sort of cheeky scenes with both Finn and Melanie. I think there’s some great moments because they obviously don’t like each other, but they respect each other. They don’t care what either one thinks about each other, so they can say really mean things and it’s kind of funny to watch for the audience. And then Finn definitely gets to see the lighter side of Clarke, that’s about as light as she gets in this series. Doing episodes four and five was really fun to sort of show a softer side.”

How does her relationship change with Finn moving forward?

Eliza Taylor: “It’s an interesting one. Clarke’s whole mentality is, ‘I can compartmentalize. I can put this whole situation in a box, put it away, and just get back to survival mode,’ which is what the show is really about. I think you see her certainly struggling with these feelings she has, but she’s very putting it away to deal with what’s at hand like the grounders and radiation.”

Will we ever see her not be able to continue to compartmentalize things as the show goes on?

Eliza Taylor: “Yeah, I think it gets messy which is great. It was so much fun to play to see her… They were very clever in the way they did this because we start the series all clean and pretty and pale, and then we get dirty and sweaty and bloody. The whole thing, you see the characters sort of emotional breakdown but it’s linked with this whole look being broken down throughout the episodes. I think they were very clever in doing that and it definitely helped me as an actor.”

Can you talk about her relationship with her mother?

Eliza Taylor: “It’s a very complicated relationship with her mother. I think the writers have found a very clever way of establishing some sort of communication and seeing how both are feeling about the situation. I think it would be silly to see them make up so soon. It’s such a heavy situation; her dad’s dead because of her mom. You’re definitely going to see a struggle between the two and hopefully some good communication as well.”

What can you tease about the finale?

Eliza Taylor: “The finale is epic. I haven’t seen it yet and I’m really excited to see it. What I like about it is it’s two-parts. The two episodes together are like a feature film of their own, which is so cool. Yeah, just expect some…I don’t even know what to say…the biggest twist yet is coming so stay tuned.”

Behind the Scenes of ‘The 100’ with Jason Rothenberg

Jason Rothenberg The 100 Interview
Eliza Taylor as Clarke, Bob Morley as Bellamy, and Marie Avgeropoulos as Octavia in ‘The 100’ (Photo by Cate Cameron/The CW © 2014 The CW Network, LLC)

The CW’s new sci-fi series The 100 is set 97 years after Earth has been made inhabitable due to a nuclear war. What survivors remain are housed on a gigantic space station known as the Ark, but because resources are dwindling 100 teenage delinquents are sent to the ground to see if they can survive.

In support of the show’s first season, cast members Isaiah Washington, Eliza Taylor, Bob Morley, Devon Bostick, and Lindsey Morgan joined executive producer Jason Rothenberg at the 2014 WonderCon in Anaheim, CA. to discuss the boundary-pushing series. Not your typical network sci-fi offering, The 100 has thus far proven that it doesn’t take shortcuts to storytelling and if that means killing off characters, then so be it.

Jason Rothenberg Interview

Death isn’t something that would seem to make a big cliffhanger, given past episodes. What can you tease about the finale?

Jason Rothenberg: [Laughing] “Maybe many deaths would. What I’m excited about is that where we are now in the episodes that have aired, we’ve told the Lord of the Flies story. We continue to tell that obviously, that continues to be a conflict going forward – the inner conflict, who’s going to be in charge, are they going to follow rules, all that stuff is there still. But in my mind it’s always been, ‘Are they going to overcome that in time to survive against the bigger threat that’s out there?’ And at the end of episode five we saw the grounder and so we really now start telling that story. We start to now realize what we’re up against. He’s a big part of episode six and in seven…I’m not going to ruin it.

Through him we begin to peel the layers of this world and by the end, to me what is fascinating is we’re the bad guys to them. The 100 landed in their backyard, so even though we love them and they think they’re doing the right thing – and they really are just trying to survive – they’re invaders. They don’t belong there. They landed in someone else’s territory and the people whose yard they landed in are warriors. They’re fighting somebody else before we got there. It’s not like suddenly that guy saw someone come from the sky and put on those clothes and weapons that we see him in. They’re fighting somebody and we, by the end of the season, tell that whole story. We will see who’s bad, who’s worse, and who is the worst. I won’t say who is good because everybody seemingly is aggressive and a threat, but so yeah, that’s the answer in terms of going forward. That’s what the story becomes about.”

Will the Ark land at any point this season or are you keeping them separate?

Jason Rothenberg: “I, from the beginning, have wanted to keep these two… I saw it as let’s play in two sandboxes from the beginning. Let’s play in the suffocating, claustrophobic, sterile environment on the Ark and contrast that with the wild and lush and mysterious stuff that’s happening on the ground. That’s really the hallmark of the show. That said, who knows? Who is to say? Once they know that the ground is survivable, which if you’ve seen a couple of episodes you realize that communication is not – communication will be established eventually.

Once they know that the ground is survivable, they have no choice but to come down, or to try to come down. The problem at that point is how do they do that because there are not any other ships ready to take people down. The ship that the kids are sent down on was put together quickly from Project Exodus, which is this thing that’s on the books from the beginning of the Ark’s existence which essentially is when the ground is survivable – which their scientists tell them won’t be for another 100 years – they will start to create these drop ships out of sections of the Ark and they be the lifeboats that go down one at a time. They’re not ready, so once they realize that the Earth is survivable, how do they go about getting the rest of the people on the ground. That’s another story we will tell.”

So the 300 did not die in vain?

Jason Rothenberg: “The 300 did not die in vain. In some senses, they had to buy that extra time so that they could make those ships. That was a really dramatic, obviously, and intense moment, I think statement that we are not playing any games. That was important to me from the beginning. I knew from day one that eventually that would have to happen and that the signal would come too late, and that’s certainly what happened. But I think that that’s a smart question because you could look at it as ‘They were wrong. That didn’t have to happen.’ But in the long run of the story, certainly, it was necessary. Not to spoil too much…I think I’m getting into spoiler territory!”

Has anything you’ve heard or read on social media affected how a story may move forward?

Jason Rothenberg: “The truth is no. I try not to pay too much attention to what people love and what people hate because then I’m going to make myself crazy. You could doctor-shop, you could only listen to the good reviews or you could only listen to the bad reviews. I read it all; I see it all and it makes me laugh when people are so dead-on to what we’re going to be doing and then other people are just completely off. For me, this is my first show and so I find it to be completely fascinating – this Twitter reality that we all live in. I’m obsessed with it but I haven’t yet seen something out there and said, ‘They really love that. I better do that.'”

Are you setting up another Lord of the Flies but on the Ark, because the leadership is being questioned?

Jason Rothenberg: “Certainly I think that’s an interesting way to look at it. There will definitely be conflict up there when the truth comes out. We saw in episode five that the people, surprisingly to some, volunteered to give up their lives for their loved ones, something that I don’t know whether personally I would have done. I have two children and I like to think that I would die for them, but you really don’t know until that moment happens. They will be really pissed off when they find out that the ground was survivable and that they knew it or that they should have known it.”

Sean Bean, Ali Larter, Tina Majorino and Morris Chestnut Talk About ‘Legends’

TNT brought the cast of the upcoming drama series Legends to the 2014 WonderCon to discuss what viewers can expect from the thriller based on the novel by Robert Littell. Sean Bean, Ali Larter, Tina Majorino, and Morris Chestnut joined executive producer/showrunner David Wilcox for a panel discussion as well as for a press conference in support of the show’s August 2014 premiere.

With Wilcox leading the way, the cast talked about the set-up for the series and their characters.

Legends Press Conference

Can you explain the premise of Legends?

David Wilcox:  “Legends is a show about a special group of FBI agents who handle covert investigations.  A ‘legend’ is an identity that is created by an undercover agent to help infiltrate and go undercover, but it’s actually a fully, deeply imagined life.  And Martin Odum, who Sean plays, is really sort of the best of the best.  These guys, just as a division, are really the tip of the spear in doing investigative work within the FBI. That’s the arena.

The show itself is basically about a guy who can’t tell his legends from his real life.  These questions of his identity are really the driving mythology of the show.”

Can you tell us a little about the characters?

David Wilcox:  Sean plays Martin Odum – if that is his real name – and Sean is an FBI agent who works legends undercover.  He does deep cover infiltration.  In the pilot, somebody comes up to him and says basically says, ‘Martin Odum is a legend.  It’s not who you really are,’ and this launches Martin on a deep quest to discover what may actually be happening in his life and who he really is.  If there is a grand conspiracy afoot behind this, he’s going to get to the bottom of it.

In the division of covert operations, which is a special elite division in the FBI, his handler – or sort of the person who runs the operations for Martin Odum – is Ali’s character, Special Agent Crystal Maguire, and there’s a little bit of history between them.  There is some degree of tension between them, in terms of tactics and methods. But together, they make a formidable team.  They are supported and backed up by Tina who plays Maggie Pool.  Maggie is trained on every database you can imagine: NSA, DoD, FBI, all of that.  She is instrumental in sort of creating the deep backstory of these legends, which becomes absolutely instrumental in many times saving Martin’s life.

And then lastly, we have Special Agent Morris Chestnut. [Laughing] That’s what I wanted to call him, actually, it’s just coincidental. No, Special Agent Tony Rice who is an agent who begins investigating a murder that he believes Sean’s character may have committed.  We’re not actually sure because when you do deep cover work and you’re in these cases, often times you’re pushed into a situation, into a position where you actually have to cross some moral lines that you wouldn’t otherwise do.

But as an FBI agent, Agent Rice doesn’t believe in the FBI that that’s acceptable and so he picks up the beginning of this investigation against Martin and discovers that there may in fact be more of a systemic corruption afoot in DCO.  And along the way, he begins discovering this large conspiracy that underlines what’s happening.  Eventually, he may in fact join the DCO.  We’ll see how it goes.”

Morris Chestnut: “I’m looking forward to seeing that.”

Did you take training and fight choreography from previous roles and apply it to this project? Or was it all learning a whole new skill set?

Ali Larter:  I’ve been doing a lot of in-the-field work, and I’ve had a lot of experience working with guns from Resident Evil and Heroes and different projects that I’ve worked on, so I’m pretty comfortable with a Glock.  But it was really exciting to get in there and be with these guys and try to really learn more on how to walk like butter and make it very smooth.  It’s easy to get tensed up.  One of the things that I learned from them, which has been really helpful to me, is just that everything’s second nature.  You just have to be in your body and be really smooth and flow and focus.  That’s been really interesting.”

What real or fictional people did you draw from for these characters?

David Wilcox:  “The show itself is based on a book by Robert Littell who created at least a couple of the characters.  That was really, I think, where all this began.  Obviously, it’s changed a little bit somewhat from the book.”

Sean Bean:  “I read the book just before we started the pilot and I’ve been reading it since.  It’s good to just dip in and out of it because the characters are very interesting. They’re fascinating characters.  That’s a good basis to work from, the book itself. I think it’s an excellent book and it certainly helped me, in terms of Martin Odum and Lincoln Dittman, the other character that I play, and Dante Orbach, which I play.  It was good.

Rather than kind of just inventing the characters, at least I had that material that I could refer to to try to create these characters.  That was very useful for me.  But it becomes a thing of its own, after a while.  I think we take that as a basis and an anchor for what we’re trying to achieve, but we kind of go off on tangents.”

David Wilcox:  “The thing that’s so cool about this show is that each of these deep cover identities, these aren’t like a new identity of the week or anything like that.  These are actually pre-existing characters and pre-existing legends, if you will, that are out there. They exist. They have their own apartments, their own cars, their own wardrobe, their own contacts, and their own friends.

All of that, and so as a case comes in to the FBI and they turn to DCO to help investigate, Martin is an operative who can pick one of his pre-existing legends, not unlike a surgeon would pick an instrument.  Like, what is the best way that he could infiltrate?  There’s a more organic and realistic way that he’s able to infiltrate some of these groups.  But I think the appeal is the fact that each of these legends is a character in their own right.  They have to be deeply imagined.”

Sean Bean:  “It’s total belief in the character. It’s total belief that I believe that he is this man, and that’s why it’s a very interesting drama.  Psychologically, it’s fascinating.  He becomes this person, totally.  He immerses himself in these characters, has his own apartments, as you said, and his own preference for food.  He totally believes in that character.

And when those characters collide, that becomes a problem psychologically, for him, even though he doesn’t want to admit it.  He thinks he can carry on doing these characters and still become himself.  Just like actors, we think we can play this part, but sooner or later that’s going to come down on you and you’re going to have some problems.  And this guy certainly has some problems, and that filters through to all the other departments in general.

Martin is a good guy. He does some good things.  The people he’s working for are not dissimilar to other illegal organizations.  It just happens that they’re part of the government and they’re legal.”

David Wilcox:  “Yeah, at the end of the day, he’s got a badge.”

Are you playing this character as if he’s playing somebody else, like two characters, at the same time?

Sean Bean:  “I do three characters, which is great.  It’s fantastic and fun.  It’s an actor’s dream to be able to do that.  But sometimes it gets a big confusing for me, too.”

How do you approach all of the different characters and how much do you know about the possibility that his real identity might not even be real?

Sean Bean: “They don’t let me know very much.”

David Wilcox:  “Martin doesn’t know where the bottom of this rabbit hole is.  In fact, what makes him such an interesting hero is that his greatest power and his greatest asset, and the thing that lets him be this incredible operative, is the thing that is jeopardizing his own psyche and, frankly, his own soul.  It’s this question of, ‘If he commits a crime in legend, does Martin Odum have to answer for that?’  What does the soul of a guy look like who steps into all these different shoes and these different identities?  He can’t be responsible for what these other identities necessarily do.”

Sean Bean: “He can do anything, but it’s not really me that did it.  It’s just somebody that I’m playing.  So, that’s interesting.”

Sean, why do you always die in everything that you’re in?

Sean Bean: “I think I’m still alive in this one.”

David Wilcox: “We don’t have any plans for Sean’s character’s death, at this time.  I’ll just say that.”

Sean Bean:  “Yeah, I do die a lot.”

Where is this show set?

David Wilcox: “DCO’s based in Los Angeles, in the federal bureaucracy here in LA. But obviously as a federal agency, they go anywhere in the country and beyond.  It’s FBI, so it’s predominately domestic but they’ll go where the stories take them.  It will not only be in the United States.”

Do you deviate from the book?

David Wilcox:  “We deviate completely from the book. It’s all a different path.  It’s rooted in those characters, but the demands of storytelling in a really good novel like Legends, and the demands of doing a TV show are totally different.  We approach story totally different. We created this very cool cast, so we’re not bound by the book but it’s a terrific book, in and of itself.”

Tina, what do you see as the difference between Mac and Maggie?

Tina Majorino:  “Oh, god, I knew that question was coming.  Mac is all computers.  I think it started out as a hobby or a way to get revenge on people to do right – or wrong sometimes.  But with Maggie, what we know about her so far is that there’s a conviction behind what she’s doing.  She’s highly trained.  It’s not just something that developed out of nowhere. You know what I mean? It’s not something that was based in a hobby.  This is a life path for this character.

What I like to think about this character is that there’s more of a patriotism behind it.  There’s a real need to participate in a solution to things, if that makes sense.  I know I’m being very elusive, but those are the differences to me.  Even though I knew there would be comparisons, two totally different mind-sets, two totally different people. When I think about Mac, there’s so much of a sarcasm and a sense of humor and a levity to her that we’re still discovering who Maggie is, at this point. I don’t feel that it would go in that direction.”

Morris, what can you tell us about Tony?

Morris Chestnut:  I don’t know actually what role Tony’s going to play.  Right now, he’s having a good time in pursuit of Martin Odum and trying to just figure out the truth, in regards to whether he’s really involved or associated with the murder, or if it was really part of a larger cover-up within the DCO.”

Movie Review: ‘Walking with the Enemy’

Walking with the Enemy Review

“If we don’t try to save the others, who will?” asks Elek Cohen (Jonas Armstrong) as he once again puts on a German officer’s uniform to try to save more Jewish people from be murdered by the SS in the dramatic film Walking with the Enemy.

In 1944 during World War II, Germany invades Hungary doubting their loyalty to the Reich. As the Nazis take control of the country, they begin to round up all the Jewish people and send them to either work camps or concentration camps. Elek is separated from his family and sent to a work camp. Quickly realizing the chance of survival in the camp is practically zero, Elek escapes and makes his way back home to discover to his horror that his parents, sister, and baby brother have been shipped off to a concentration camp.

Fortunately, Elek’s new girlfriend, Hannah (Hannah Tointon), takes him to work for her uncle who is employed by the Swiss government and is printing Swiss-Jewish documents that should keep any Jewish person who carries them safe from the SS and Gestapo. But one night on her way home Hannah is harassed and chased by two semi-drunk German officers who break into her parent’s home while one officer keeps her family and Elek back with his pistol, the other grabs Hannah and takes her into the bedroom to rape her.

When the first officer goes into the bedroom too, Elek rushes in and he and Hannah manage to kill both of them during the fight. They bury them in the cellar. A few days later when one of Elek’s best friends gets picked up by the German police and taken away to be tortured, Elek – desperate to try to save him – digs up the dead officers and uses their uniforms to enter the German-infested prison and order them to turn his captured friend over to him for questioning. Getting him back to their safe house, Elek quickly realizes that he can pose as a German officer to try to save other Jewish prisoners from certain death. But how long can he continue the charade before being discovered as a fraud?

Inspired by a true story, Walking with the Enemy is an intense World War II dramatic thriller that effectively brings back the horrors and hatred of the times. The film has a solid cast with Sir Ben Kingsley as Regent Horthy, the leader of Hungary trying desperately to find a way to save his country from the Nazis and align Hungary with Russia. It’s another flawless performance.

Jonas Armstrong delivers a decent but at times the over-the-top performance as Elek, the young man willing to risk his own life time and time again to save others. He has great chemistry with Hannah Tointon as Hannah the girl he hopes to one day marry, and his best scenes are with her and when he poses as the German officer trying to save other Jewish citizens from being slaughtered. It’s in the scenes with his friends explaining why he has to keep trying to save more and more lives that he has a tendency to overact.

Hannah Tointon is perfect as Hannah, the lovely young girl who both loves and admires Elek for his courage and morals and fears for his life more and more every time he puts on the SS uniform. She conveys wonderfully many emotions in the film – from love to terror and determination. Flora Spencer-Longhurst is superb as Rachel, Hannah’s kid sister. She steals almost every scene she’s in and conveys such horrible fear so wonderfully that it’s sure to stay with the audience long after the credits roll.

The set design, production, and costumes are first-rate, bringing back to life and capturing the look and sound of Hungary during the Nazi occupation in 1944.

Compelling and engaging, Walking with the Enemy is an inspirational film that captures both the horrors of war and the strength and bravery of good men. It’s a film not to be missed.

GRADE B-

Walking with the Enemy was directed by Mark Schmidt and is rated PG-13 for war violence including crimes against humanity.
