Bob Morley Talks About ‘The 100’ and Playing a Sort-Of Bad Guy

Bob Morley The 100 Interview

Bob Morley from The CW’s The 100 made the trek to the 2014 WonderCon in Anaheim (think San Diego Comic-Con but on a much smaller, more-manageable scale) to discuss the sci-fi series and what audiences can expect from the episodes remaining of season one. Morley also talked about how he views his character (‘Bellamy’) not as a bad guy but one who has his own agenda and motivations that don’t always necessarily come across as heroic.

Bob Morley The 100 Interview

Is it good to be bad?

Bob Morley: “It is good to be bad. It’s a very interesting thing to play, but I don’t know if he’s necessarily completely bad.”

Self-serving?

Bob Morley: “Yeah, to a point. But I think as the story progresses you’ll see his reasons behind that. But yeah, it’s very kind of a selfish thing.”

Have you known your character’s motivations from the beginning, because there’s always been an implied morality?

Bob Morley: “You know, I had known a little bit about it but only really learned the depth of it as we were shooting the season. I don’t know if it was a good or a bad thing had I known more about where his backstory then, possibly I could have played it too much. I just tried to play it in the middle and then as we learn more and more, then it became more clear and easier for me to guide my character in a certain direction. They created a great arc for my character, the writers and Jason [Rothenberg].”

Do you have any idea where they are going to take next season, if there is a season two? Have they said anything?

Bob Morley: “Oh man, no! I remember when we just finished shooting the pilot and we sat down in the writers’ room being given the first season. They had all these ideas about where we were going to go and then we started shooting it and all those ideas they’d initially said didn’t really come to fruition. So, for me to guess about what might be happening next season would just be ridiculous. I mean, you hear some things but I wouldn’t bank on it. The show just becomes so expansive by the end of the first season, it’ll be interesting to see where they go with it.”

They’ve been killing off all season, what can we expect?

Bob Morley: “I wouldn’t say it calms down but it definitely carries on in that kind of nature where no one is really safe. If we’re going to talk about next season…then maybe I’m not there. Who knows? If they carry on in this fashion, yeah.”

Are we going to get into more about how humanity got to this point where such rules have been set into place?

Bob Morley: “Yeah. I guess you’d call it the mythology of where we are gets explained further down the track. And even with the use of flashbacks, you can kind of see how the society came to be. But there a few episodes further down a lot of people talk about how things came to be and how the space stations came together on the Ark. That will be explained.”

The relationship between Bellamy and Clarke feel like they’re natural leaders. Will they get drawn closer together?

Bob Morley: “I think the situation definitely brings them closer together. They definitely grow closer together. I think the show hints at the fact that in order for the 100 to live, the two leaders can’t be at loggerheads with each other. There has to be some sort of common ground and they have to comprise their stances. As it continues on, they definitely grow together but they’re always going to be conflicted because they go about problem solving in a very different manner.”

So there’s nothing romantic happening there?

Bob Morley: “I think like romance gets complicated and especially with the situation that the kids are in, it’s hard for that to bloom in such a tough situation. But I never say never. You have to just keep watching.”

Last we saw he was sleeping with two women at the same time.

Bob Morley: “Yeah, I don’t know how he wrangled that. I don’t know how he convinced two women to sleep with him. I think because Bellamy establishes his tent very early on and his bed, maybe he’s the only guy in the camp with a proper bed so there’s a line-up for people to get in there.”

Can you talk about physically shooting these scenes? There’s a lot of action going on.

Bob Morley: “It becomes so much more involved throughout the storyline and the action really ramps up. Not only that but the weather gets quite freezing up in Vancouver when it turns to winter. That was quite…I wouldn’t say an ordeal, but it was tough. But we had such an amazing stunt department who – I mean, I love doing that stuff, I love being physical so we had a fair chance, all of us actors had a real fair go at having to get to do our own stunts so that was exciting. I think doing that and being within the action really helps the performance.

But yeah, I remember reading a couple of episodes as it goes on and it really kind of explodes like about two or three episodes from here. It just becomes quite action-y.”

Was there anything you asked to do but they wouldn’t let you?

Bob Morley: “No. They kind of let me do a lot of my own stuff. But there were a lot of times when the stunt coordinator would stop me because he’d be like, ‘You’re getting too into this and you’re going to hurt yourself.’ I really want to do them and I try really hard, because I don’t have the proper techniques for it and I end up hurting myself. Sometimes they have to protect me from myself. But they let us do all the stunts that we wanted to do. Everyone throughout the show gets to do it.”

The 100 is based on a book. Did you do any research on your character after you got the role?

Bob Morley: “Well I read the book but we were probably about three or four episodes into shooting by that point. I think it got released around the same time. I enjoyed the book but we differ quite markedly between the show and the book. Bellamy was much nicer in the book.”

Has there been any response from fans that has surprised you?

Bob Morley: “I thought Bellamy was quite a douche but because you have to empathize with your character, I always saw that he had a good heart and I’m surprised that people can actually see that as well. That’s a credit to the writers and the director and everyone doing their job. So that was a really a pleasant surprise that he actually has fans because, luckily for me, there was another character, Murphy – Richard Harmon – who came on and he was like the ultimate evil so he took a lot of the brunt.”

Inside ‘Star-Crossed’ with Victoria Platt and Chelsea Gilligan

Star-Crossed Cast

Victoria Platt says fans of Star-Crossed have been sending in photos of themselves tattooed like the Atrians and as a sci-fi fan Platt’s fully supportive of the involvement and enthusiasm of the audience. The cast also takes part in live-tweeting the show, connecting with fans while discussing each new episode.

And Star-Crossed cast members also presented a panel at the 2014 WonderCon in Anaheim, CA, and sat down for interviews to chat about what viewers can expect from the remaining episodes of season one. Check out what Victoria Platt (‘Gloria’) and Chelsea Gilligan (‘Teri’) had to say about the upcoming epic finale and life on the set.

Victoria Platt and Chelsea Gilligan Interview

Was the appeal the fact that Star-Crossed is a sci-fi program?

Victoria Platt: “No. I think that that was the cherry on top for me because whenever you audition for something, it’s really just about the job. Who you are as a person, what you like as a person is sort of separate. That was just an additional thing for Victoria the person. Victoria the actor is like, ‘Yes, a job!’ Victoria the person is like, ‘It’s sci-fi!'”

What is the set like?

Chelsea Gilligan: “Our sets are awesome, the Sector in particular is just incredible. It’s exactly how it is in the show, but of course, they have to CGI the higher things. But it’s like you step back in time. It’s crazy. It’s really neat.”

Was it what you expected from reading the script and then going to the actual set?

Chelsea Gilligan: “It was more than what I expected. When I read it initially I was like, ‘This is going to be badass!’ And then when we walk onto the set it’s like, ‘Okay, we’re getting real now. We’re doing something really cool right now.'”

From episode one to the finale, how much has your character changed?

Chelsea Gilligan: “Well, right now Teri is definitely a hardcore, intense badass and I think as the episodes keep progressing getting towards the finale, we do see a little bit of a softer side of her – but not necessarily. So, don’t get excited – but kind of. She definitely has a heart and a lot of people don’t really know that so it’s cool to see that she does want to take care of people, she does want to be involved. But at the end of the day, she’ll kick your butt if you cross her.”

Victoria Platt: “I love that about Teri. I do! For Gloria, I think what we saw in beginning was actually hiding all of the stuff she had hidden. She has to put forward this really strong, really immovable base because nobody can know that she’s had a relationship with an Atrian. No one can know that it’s Nox, and no one can know that she has this half-alien/half-human baby.

So I think what you’re seeing more is a reveal more of what she’s been dealing with over the season and not necessarily a change in her. Obviously, giving away her child does soften her a bit but I also think it makes her a lot more clear and focused about her goal and the integration program, and getting it really successful so that she can get her kid back.”

Do you like playing the hardcore badass or do you prefer the softer side?

Chelsea Gilligan: “I love it because I’m so not hardcore in real life so just to be able to take my earrings off and head-butt people, it’s awesome! I love it. It’s fun.”

Any accidents on the set so far?

Chelsea Gilligan: “Yes. In episode four with the big fight scene by the pool, we’d been rehearsing all day and it was great. It was me and a bunch of stunt guys, and I don’t know what was happening but like their testosterone was getting the better of themselves and they yell, ‘Action!’ and I’m like, ‘Here we go.’ So we barrel through these doors and I was pushed into the pool and that was not supposed to happen.”

Victoria Platt: “And she was leather-clad.”

Chelsea Gilligan: “Leather, head to toe. It was a mess. I got dry pretty quickly though so it wasn’t that bad, but it was definitely something that wasn’t supposed to happen.”

Do you sink automatically when you’re in leather?

Chelsea Gilligan: “I don’t know. That’s a good question! I don’t remember. I remember just falling in and being like, ‘I’ve got to get out! I need to get out of here!’ I have video of it too. It’s bad.”

What can fans expect out of the season one finale? We hear it’s epic.

Chelsea Gilligan: “It is epic. You guys need to sit down, definitely, for what’s about to happen. Keep watching and get ready for epic-ness because it’s going to get epic and crazy and explosions and all that.”

Victoria Platt: “A lot more action.”

Do you think it sets up a second season that will be more action?

Victoria Platt: “Oh yeah.”

Chelsea Gilligan: “Hardcore.”

Victoria Platt: “It really does because then you begin to understand… It answers a lot more questions and a lot more people know the truth. A lot of people find out the truth about things that the entire season they didn’t know.”

Stephen Colbert Explains Why He’s Ending ‘The Colbert Report’

Stephen Colbert dropped by The Daily Show to break the news to Jon Stewart that he’s ending The Colbert Report. In character, Colbert explained that he’d conquered television and there was nothing left for him to do but retire. When Stewart asked about maybe taking over for David Letterman, Colbert said no way as that job was already taken by “some fat guy.” Before leaving, Colbert – doing his best to sound bitter – introduced his own Daily Show highlight reel since Stewart had never put one together for him when he left. Stewart explained that Colbert never actually left, he simply moved to a later time slot.

…which isn’t as strange as it sounds in the headline. Adam Levine stopped by The Ellen Show to talk about The Voice and his upcoming film Begin Again, and to take part in a test to see if two audience members could pick him out while blindfolded just by smelling/touching him. The two lucky ladies had to choose which of two men were Adam without knowing that the other man they were touching was none other than Adam’s fellow Voice coach, Usher.

‘Walking with the Enemy’ Director Mark Schmidt and Producer Randy Williams Interview

Liberty Studios is releasing their first major motion picture on April 25, 2014 with Walking with the Enemy, a World War II dramatic thriller based on a true story. With the film entering theaters, I had the opportunity to sit down with the director of the movie Mark Schmidt and producer Randy Williams to talk about the making of the film.

How did you learn of the story of the Jewish rebel who dressed in a German uniform to save the lives of others during the 2nd World War in Hungary?

Mark Schmidt: “I came across a documentary on World War II about people who did extraordinary things, these ordinary people who risk their lives for others. I came across this one gentleman and his story really struck me, so I went out and got some history books on Hungary and what happened there. His name kept popping up here and there. Then I went to Budapest and found his village and talked to people, and I started to put together the story. I met with his family and they gave me some thoughts on it and I went forward from there.”

When you were casting the film how and when did you decide to cast Jonas Armstrong as the main character of Elek Cohen?

Mark Schmidt: “We had looked at several actors but we just felt that Jonas Armstrong was the right person for the part. He has such a wide range in his acting ability. He was just terrific to work with and he amazed us with how quickly he was able to adapt. He’s just a fantastic actor. We’re honored to have him in the film.”

His character has a love interest in the film named Hannah Schoen played by Hannah Tointon who is really the only person who gives him hope to possibly have a life after the war. How did you choose Miss Tointon?

Mark Schmidt: “Well, again, we were searching for the right actress for that part and we tested many young actresses and then Hannah came in and she’s British and she just seemed to fit the part. We tried her with the lead Jonas and felt she was the right one for the part.”

Walking with the Enemy
Hannah Tointon stars in ‘Walking with the Enemy’ (Photo @ 2014 Liberty Studios)

She auditioned with Jonas Armstrong?

Mark Schmidt: “Yes. When we got down to about three actresses, we had them read with Jonas to get another feel for it. She did such a fantastic job and had real chemistry with Jonas Armstrong.”

Where did you find Flora Spencer-Longhurst who plays Hannah’s younger sister?

Mark Schmidt: “Well, she’s based in London and she is just a fantastic young actress. Truly amazing. She had tried out with several others and we felt she was the best one for the part. Every time I saw her after we started filming – and she does such a great job of really putting on the emotion of terror of what those people went through – I just thanked her every day and she’s such a nice young lady she did such a tremendous job of portraying Rachel.”

Can you talk a little about working with the great Ben Kingsley who plays Regent Horthy, the political leader of Hungary during World War II?

Mark Schmidt: “Sir Ben Kingsley, we were just honored to have him in the film. He’s such a tremendous professional and he worked really hard every day. Even when it was time for him to leave, he stayed extra hours to read lines with other actors and help out. I am so thankful for Sir Ben Kingsley and I’m honored to have him in the film.”

How did the set design and costumes come together?

Mark Schmidt: “We scouted several countries on where to film and we ended up over in Eastern Europe. We were trying to do everything we could to make it look authentic and bring back 1944, and it all came together quite well. For example, there is this little village that we found that has a monastery that was built in the 1100s, and the buildings today look probably the same as they did hundreds of years ago. The film has planes and trucks and trains and tanks and gives the film such an authentic feel and look to it.”

What was one of the biggest problems or obstacles in bringing this picture to the big screen?

Mark Schmidt: ” I don’t know if we had any obstacles. I think we were always short on time. The days of filmmaking and shooting maybe getting only four or five hours of sleep that was probably the biggest obstacle just having enough time to be creative. Randy, do you have any thoughts?”

Randy Williams: “It takes a lot of people to make a film and orchestrating all those people to get the job done in a very time-constrained environment is a big challenge.”
