Commonly, the original 1987 RoboCop is thought of as little more than a violent action movie. There’s no denying that element, as the film earned its R-rating in bullets and blood. However, there was more going on underneath the surface of its metal skin than a simple shoot ‘em up. At the time, Detroit hadn’t sunk into its current shell of its former glory and although corporations were on their way to owning the American way, it hadn’t reached the current state of things with a small few mega-conglomerates scooping up everyone beneath them to ensure market share.
And there’s no point in beating around the bush. I’ve looked forward to this reboot about as much as a root canal. It’s seemed like just another franchise from my childhood being retooled for commercialism rather than anything approaching art. Hearing the rumors that director José Padilha was unhappy with the studio making too many of the decisions didn’t help things either. However, after sitting through it all, I’ll admit that current day RoboCop isn’t just a shiny coat of black paint on a nostalgic memory.
Set not too far into the future, the America depicted in the movie has truly become the World Police, with OmniCorp’s robot designs providing “security” around the world and keeping American troops out of harm’s way. The opening scene showing these robots’ effectiveness while deployed in Tehran certainly sets the tone. All of the footage is used as propaganda crying out for domestic deployment of the robots, with Samuel L. Jackson portraying an ultra conservative a la Fox News and blustering fire and brimstone with the most transparent of agendas.
Where the movie succeeds is the casting of the OmniCorp employees; from Michael Keaton as the CEO, to his executives (Jennifer Ehle and Jay Baruchel), to the genius doctor adapting technology to create the titular character (Gary Oldman), and most especially to the mercenary in charge of ensuring the robots were as formidable as possible (Jackie Earle Haley). Each of the actors add a much-needed layer of believability to the picture. Oldman seems like the likeliest of the bunch to stand out but due to underdevelopment of his character’s shifting morality, it’s Haley who steals every scene.
Getting to RoboCop himself, Joel Kinnaman is the actor tasked with trying to fill the giant shoes of Peter Weller and he’s at a disadvantage the whole way. Rather than center his struggle for humanity around the bond between himself and his partner, and the gruesome manner in which he was left for dead, here we have a cop who’s too brash to realize how deep the corruption in the police department until it’s too late.
The story tries to pull at the heartstrings with Abbie Cornish playing the dutiful wife and a son whose sole job is to remind audiences what a great Dad he had because they watched sports together; however, most of this simply ends up padding the runtime. Perhaps most troubling to the film is its resolution. After all of the high-powered action that it takes our hero to get to the final few bad guys, the resultant skirmishes with lesser foes is anticlimactic and loses what steam had been generated.
All that said, the first half of the movie is a surprisingly good action film. I appreciate that it paid homage in spots while also differentiating itself enough to give it some reason to exist. I’m even astonished to find that ensuring a PG-13 rating (to ensure better odds at the box office) didn’t castrate the violence to the degree I feared. It still lacks the punch of the original in that regard but despite a deep desire to tear down another needless Hollywood reboot, if all you want is robots and guns, the 2014 RoboCop fits that bill.
GRADE: C+
RoboCop opens in theaters on February 12, 2014 and is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action including frenetic gun violence throughout, brief strong language, sensuality and some drug material.
Morgan Freeman says those ominous words in the new trailer for Transcendence, editor Wally Pfister’s feature film directorial debut. Pfister seems to have learned a lot about filmmaking from working with writer/director Christopher Nolan, and the tone and look of Transcendence is reminiscent of Inception.
The cast of Transcendence is led by Johnny Depp and includes Paul Bettany, Rebecca Hall, Kate Mara, Cillian Murphy, Clifton Collins, Jr., and Morgan Freeman. Warner Bros is aiming for an April 11, 2014 theatrical release.
The Plot:
Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.

Filming is underway on the documentary Dealt about the extraordinary life of master card mechanic/card shark Richard Turner. Dealt is being directed by Luke Korem and produced by Koremn, Bradley Jackson, Russell Wayne Groves, and Andrew Lee, and according to Ralph Smyth Entertainment, we can expect to see the documentary debut in 2015.
“His talent is mesmerizing and character is larger than life,” said Korem. “I’m honored to make this documentary.”
Details on Dealt:
Dealt is a documentary that follows Richard Turner on his journey of self-discovery after losing his sight at the young age of nine. In his formative years Turner battled with drugs and alcohol due to feeling helpless and defeated. However, Turner eventually developed an enhanced sense of touch, and when he picked up a deck of cards his life changed.
Mentored by Dai Vernon, known as the only man to ever fool Harry Houdini, Turner quickly became the greatest card magician of his time. Not only has he enraptured the world around him with his talent, Turner is also a speaker who motivates others to “deal with the hand they’ve been Dealt in life.”
Richard Turner Facts [Courtesy of Ralph Smyth Entertainment]
Richard grew up in San Diego, California in the 1960s and as a young boy he dreamed of becoming like Maverick – the Hollywood TV character played by James Garner who could swindle any old-west casino. Richard would dress up in cowboy attire and try to fool his brother and sister with card tricks. He practiced every day and fell in love with magic. However, at the age of nine, Richard began loosing his sight to a degenerative disease that would eventually leave him in a world of darkness.
For much of his formative years he felt helpless and angry, and drifted onto a path of destruction often turning to drugs to cope with his loss. Richard’s perception changed when he realized his loss of sight was being compensated by an increasingly refined God-given sense of touch. At the age of twenty-one he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in magic. There he was quickly discovered and mentored by the renowned Dai Vernon, known as the only magician to ever fool Houdini.
Due to Richard’s intense dedication (practicing 18 hours a day) and amazing touch, he mastered all that Vernon taught him, and invented his own methods, which made him arguably the best card mechanic in the world.
“Cuckoo was one of BBC Three’s most stand out comedies, so I’m delighted to welcome it back with the addition of superstar Taylor Lautner joining the critically acclaimed Greg Davies and an outstanding British comedy cast for what will be one of the comedy treats of the year,” said Zai Bennett, Controller, BBC Three.
Added executive producer Ash Atalla, “Cuckoo is one of my favourite shows I’ve ever been involved in. We can’t wait to come back bigger and better.”
Ben Taylor is back directing season two with series creators Robin French and Kieron Quirke back as writers.
Details on the Cuckoo Plot:
Shortly after renewing their wedding vows, Cuckoo (Andy Samberg) flew the coop to continue researching his book. While on walkabout in the foothills of the Himalayas, he went missing… eventually presumed dead.
It’s now two years since his disappearance and life in the Thompson family house is only just getting back to normal. Ken (Greg Davies) and Lorna (Helen Baxendale) are looking forward to a future without the kids under their feet. Dylan (Tyger Drew-Honey) is about to go to university and Rachel (Tamla Kari) is rebuilding her life with her new boyfriend, a nice-but-dull lawyer, Ben. Despite appearances, Cuckoo’s absence is still felt – not least by his young widow, Rachel. Everyone worries she’s lost her mojo since the tragic events in Asia.
This fragile equilibrium is well and truly shattered when a handsome and mysterious young stranger (Lautner) appears in Lichfield, looking for the man who found fame and philosophy in the simplest of hot snacks: the jack-et po-ta-to.
Aaron Paul, Rami Malek, and Dominic Cooper get behind the wheel in Need for Speed, the action drama based on the popular video game series. There’s not much new to see in this just-released behind-the-scenes video from DreamWorks Pictures, although there are a sprinkling of quotes from the stars of the film.
Directed by Scott Waugh, Need for Speed opens in theaters on March 14, 2014.
The Plot:
DreamWorks Pictures’ Need for Speed marks an exciting return to the great car culture films of the 1960s and ’70s, when the authenticity of the world brought a new level of intensity to the action on-screen. Tapping into what makes the American myth of the open road so appealing, the story chronicles a near-impossible cross-country journey for our heroes — one that begins as a mission for revenge, but proves to be one of redemption.
Based on the most successful racing video game franchise ever with over 140 million copies sold, “Need for Speed” captures the freedom and excitement of the game in a real-world setting, while bringing to life the passion for the road that has made our love of cars so timeless.
The film centers around Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul), a blue-collar mechanic who races muscle cars on the side in an unsanctioned street-racing circuit. Struggling to keep his family-owned garage afloat, he reluctantly partners with the wealthy and arrogant ex-NASCAR driver Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper). But just as a major sale to car broker Julia Maddon (Imogen Poots) looks like it will save Tobey’s shop, a disastrous race allows Dino to frame Tobey for a crime he didn’t commit, and sending Tobey to prison while Dino expands his business out West.
Two years later, Tobey is released and set on revenge — but he knows his only chance to take down his rival Dino is to defeat him in the high-stakes race known as De Leon — the Super Bowl of underground racing. However to get there in time, Tobey will have to run a high-octane, action-packed gauntlet that includes dodging pursuing cops coast-to-coast as well as contending with a dangerous bounty Dino has put out on his car. With the help of his loyal crew and the surprisingly resourceful Julia, Tobey defies odds at every turn and proves that even in the flashy world of exotic supercars, the underdog can still finish first.
This has to be one of the most inventive, well put-together bits involving the subject of break-ups in the history of videos. Okay, so that’s pushing it a bit, but this “Movie Title Breakup” video is an absolute must-see. Written, directed, edited, and starring Ryan Hunter, this nearly four minute video features a pregnant woman (played by Jenn Lyon) having dinner with her spouse. As the dinner goes on, the charges of infidelity fly until the waitress (Maggie Ross) has had enough and steps in to shut them up.
Will the world’s most popular pig and the frog of her dreams exchange vows in the upcoming Muppets Most Wanted adventure coming to theaters on March 21, 2014? Or is Miss Piggy posing in a fabulous Vivienne Westwood Couture wedding dress designed just for her as a way of throwing off the audience?
Neither Miss Piggy nor Kermie will provide the answer to the question on everyone’s lips, but Miss Piggy did say, “You’ll have to see the movie to find out.” She’s such a tease.
“Vivienne Westwood is fabulous—just like moi,” added Miss Piggy. “When I asked her to design this wedding dress for moi’s new movie Muppets Most Wanted, she was thrilled and I was thrilled. The only one a bit ‘iffy’ about it was the Frog.”
Disney, along with revealing Miss Piggy’s possible wedding dress, offered this info on her Muppets Most Wanted outfits:
In the film, Miss Piggy wears a Vivienne Westwood couture Long Ivory Court wedding gown, with corset detailing and paillettes made from recycled plastic bottles, accessorized with an ivory tulle veil. Piggy also entrusted the designer with additional looks for the film, including a Vivienne Westwood couture Harris Tweed houndstooth check coat and matching beret worn in a scene set at the Tower of London. Miss Piggy also chose a long silver hand-embroidered floral lace gown for a very special number in the film.
The Muppets Most Wanted Plot: Disney’s Muppets Most Wanted takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid, Dublin and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine — the World’s Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit the Frog — and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais.
The film stars Ty Burrell as Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon and Tina Fey as Nadya, a feisty prison guard.
