Fox is pulling the plug on the singing competition The X Factor. The series never lived up to its hype, with Simon Cowell’s promise of huge ratings never materializing. Today, Fox and Cowell officially announced the show is over after a three-season run and Cowell will be returning to The X Factor UK.
“I’ve had a fantastic time over the last 12 years, both on The X Factor and American Idol. And apart from being lucky enough to find some amazing talent on the shows, I have always had an incredible welcome from the American public (most of the time!),” said Simon Cowell. “Last year, for a number of reasons, I had to make a decision to return to the U.K. version of The X Factor in 2014. So for now, I’m back to the U.K. and I want to thank FOX for being an incredible partner and I also want to thank everybody who has supported my shows. America, I’ll see you soon!”
“To all of us at FOX, Simon is more than one of the most prolific TV personalities of our time –he’s part of our family. A consummate showman and partner, there’s no one more passionate or creative than Simon, and we feel so fortunate to have enjoyed such a wonderful, collaborative relationship with him over the past 12 years,” said Kevin Reilly, Chairman of Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. “Unfortunately, there is no X Factor USA without Simon Cowell, but we understand and support his decision to focus on the international formats and on the next phase of his personal life. We wish him the very best, and it’s our sincere hope that we work together again soon.”
“The X Factor has become a true global hit entertainment format produced locally in 45 countries, and since its launch in 2004, has been watched by more than half a billion people around the world,” said Trish Kinane, President of Entertainment Programming and Executive Producer, FremantleMedia North America. “The U.S. version of The X Factor has had a great run dominating the social media charts and discovering internationally successful artists, but Simon’s return to the U.K. X Factor has been long anticipated. We have long-running partnerships both with FOX and Syco Entertainment and very much look forward to what the future holds for our ongoing relationships with them.”
The true story of serial killer Keith Hunter Jesperson, nicknamed the Happy Face Killer, provides the inspiration for Lifetime’s original movie, Happy Face Killer. David Arquette leads the cast as Jesperson, and Gloria Reuben co-stars as Melinda Gand, the lead FBI investigator hunting down the serial killer.
Happy Face Killer will debut on March 1, 2014 at 8pm ET/PT. The dramatic film was directed by Rick Bota (Beauty and the Beast) from a script by Richard Christian Matheson (Stephen King’s Nightmares and Dreamscapes).
The Happy Face Killer Plot:
Inspired by real-life events, Happy Face Killer follows the hunt and ultimate capture of serial killer Keith Hunter Jesperson (Arquette). An aspiring cop turned long-haul truck driver after a failed marriage, Jesperson strangled his first victim following an argument and was back on the road again the very next day, killing at least eight women over a five-year span as he crisscrossed the country. Upset after a woman falsely confesses that she and her boyfriend are responsible for one of his murders, Jesperson begins to taunt the authorities by sending a series of disturbing letters to newspaper editors, even scribbling confessions on the walls of highway rest stops admitting that he loved killing his victims.
By signing his morbid notes with a happy face, he earned himself the notorious nickname “Happy Face Killer” and forever left his mark of fear.

“Un-Real is unlike anything that exists on television today,” said Rob Sharenow, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Lifetime. “It’s premium and original on every level, and we’re thrilled that Marti Noxon and Sarah Gertrude Shapiro’s unique series will be Lifetime’s first program produced by A+E Studios.”
The Un-Real Plot:
Set against the backdrop of a hit dating competition show, Un-Real is led by Rachel (Shiri Appleby, Girls), a young staffer whose sole job is to manipulate her relationships with and among the contestants to get the vital dramatic and outrageous footage the program’s dispassionate executive producer (Megyn Price) demands. What ensues is a humorous, yet vexing, look at what happens in the world of unscripted television, where being a contestant can be vicious and producing it is a whole other reality. Un-Real also stars Freddie Stroma as the dating show’s handsome and intelligent bachelor, Adam; and Josh Kelly as Jeremy, a cameraman who is Rachel’s ex-boyfriend. The dating show’s contestants include Grace, portrayed by Nathalie Kelley, who immediately wins Adam’s heart; Anna, played by Johanna Braddy, who is eager to land a husband; Faith, a sensitive and vulnerable tomboy from the South portrayed by Breeda Wool; and Mary, played by Ashley Scott, a gorgeous single mom who has been unlucky in love. Arielle Kebbel will guest star as Courtney, a contestant who has no filter and isn’t on the show to make any friends.
Jimmy Fallon and The Roots’ Frank Knuckles took on Colin Farrell and Chris Pratt in a game of Bubble Soccer, an athletic competition which found Fallon spending a lot of the one minute 30 second running time on the floor like a turtle on its back. The goal was to kick the soccer ball into their opponent’s open elevator. The winners? Watch the video to find out:

Jay Leno has officially stepped down after 22 years of hosting The Tonight Show. As he bid adieu to his loyal viewers, Leno took the time to thank his fans as well as the crew of the show. “First year of the show I lost my mom. Second year I lost my dad. Then my brother died, and after that I was pretty much out of family. The folks here became my family. Consequently, when they went through rough times, I tried to be there for them. The last time we left this show you might remember we had the 64 children that were born among all of our staffers that married, and that was a great moment,” said Leno, obviously very emotional. “And when people say to me, ‘Hey, why didn’t you go to ABC? Why didn’t you go to Fox? Why didn’t you go…’ I didn’t know anybody over there. These are the only people I’ve ever known. I’m also proud to say this is a union show and I have never worked with a more professional group of people in my life.”
The final episode of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno also featured an interview with Billy Crystal followed by a musical number with Crystal, Jack Black, Kim Kardashian, Chris Paul, Sheryl Crow, Jim Parsons, Carol Burnett, Oprah Winfrey, the Shut Your Von Trapp Family Singers, and Marc Shaiman on piano.
