Martin Garrix, Banks and Kid Ink are among the artists Shazam is predicting will have major success in 2014, based on a comprehensive process involving data gathered from millions of users. More than 400 million people use Shazam’s services with the company reporting more than 15 million Shazams are performed each day, and because they aren’t relying on just a handful of critics to determine the next breakthrough artists, Shazam believes their predictions are more representative of the general public.
2014 New Artists to Watch [According to Shazam]:
Action Bronson – Queens native Bronson lists early influences as Wu-Tang Clan. He launched his first album in 2011 but gained huge Shazam tags in 2013 after releasing several hotly tipped mix tapes.
August Alsina – August’s single “I Luv This S**t” has been one of the most Shazamed rap tracks of 2013 and his mix tape tracks are also gaining traction with hip hop heads.
Banks – Born Jillian Banks, she started writing music as a teenager in suburban LA and released an acclaimed EP in 2013.
Jhené Aiko – Collaborations with Drake and Big Sean thrust her into the public eye in 2013. Now, after releasing a mix tape, ‘Sail Out’, Aiko looks set for big things.
Kid Ink – XXL Magazine listed Kid Ink among artists like Danny Brown and Macklemore in its 2012 Freshman Class feature. Signed with RCA/Epic, Kid Ink is set to release his first album under a major label this year.
Lucy Hale – Best known for her role as Aria Montgomery on the ABC Family series Pretty Little Liars, Hale is set to be the next country star.
Martin Garrix – Dutch DJ best known for his track, “Animals,” Garrix is the youngest person ever to top the Beatport charts.
Rich Homie Quan – Georgia native and artist for the Island Jam label, Quan has been named by the New York Times as one of “Atlanta’s rising generation of rappers … who deliver lines with melody and heart, like singers on the verge of a breakdown.”
Sam Smith – London-born Smith contributed the soaring vocals on Disclosure’s 2013 hit, “Latch” and Naughty Boy’s “La La La.” He prefers the raw soul style in the vein of his favorite artists, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan and Aretha Franklin.
Vance Joy – Originally from Melbourne, Vance Joy has already achieved success in his native Australia with his single, “Riptide,” and is set to break globally this year.
The year 2013 will be best known as the year Robin Thicke’s dance track “Blurred Lines” became the soundtrack of the summer and with newcomer, Lorde, storming the charts worldwide with her debut track, “Royals.” But they can’t touch Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who owned 2013 with three successive hits “Thrift Shop”, “Can’t Hold Us” and “Same Love.” (Photo: Business Wire)

The world premiere of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be streaming live online for all of those Hobbit fans who can’t make it to Hollywood to hang out on the red carpet. Among The Hobbit cast members expected to show up to chat about the movie are Martin Freeman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Armitage, Evangeline Lily, Orlando Bloom, Luke Evans, and Stephen Fry, along with filmmaker Peter Jackson.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens in theaters on December 13, 2013.
The Plot: “The film continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. Having survived the beginning of their unexpected journey, the Company continues East, encountering along the way the skin-changer Beorn and a swarm of giant Spiders in the treacherous Mirkwood Forest.
After escaping capture by the dangerous Woodland Elves, the Dwarves journey to Lake-town, and finally to the Lonely Mountain itself, where they must face the greatest danger of all—a creature more terrifying than any before, which will test not only the depth of their courage but the limits of their friendship and the wisdom of the journey itself—the Dragon Smaug.
Aaron Eckhart stars as ‘Adam’ in I, FRANKENSTEIN. (Photo credit: Ben King / Lionsgate Films)Lionsgate debuted a new trailer for the horror/action movie I, Frankenstein during The Walking Dead‘s season four midseason finale, showing off more of Aaron Eckhart and more of the film’s action. However even with the new trailer, without reading the official synopsis included below it’s nearly impossible to tell what the movie is all about.
Also starring Bill Nighy, Miranda Otto, Jai Courtney, and Yvonne Strahovski, I, Frankenstein will enter theaters on January 24, 2014.
The Plot:
Set in a dystopic present where vigilant gargoyles and ferocious demons rage in a battle for ultimate power, Victor Frankenstein’s creation Adam (Aaron Eckhart) finds himself caught in the middle as both sides race to discover the secret to his immortality. From the creators of the hit supernatural saga, Underworld, comes the action thriller I, Frankenstein, written for the screen and directed by Stuart Beattie based on the graphic novel I, Frankenstein by Kevin Grevioux.
Beth Greene (Emily Kinney), Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), Tyreese (Chad Coleman) and Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) in 'The Walking Dead' (Photo Credit:Gene Page/AMC)
Warning – Contains Spoilers
“We’re not leaving,” says Rick (Andrew Lincoln) to The Governor (David Morrissey) who’s delivered an ultimatum outside the prison fence while backed up by a new militia and a tank. The Governor gives Rick the choice of leaving the prison by sundown or else he and his army will take it by force in AMC’s horror series The Walking Dead Season 4’s Midseason Finale: “Too Far Gone.”
It’s been an exhilarating season for the zombie series as Hershel (Scott Wilson), Daryl (Norman Reedus), Rick and the other survivors housed in the prison have been battling not only hungry and persistent flesh-eating walkers trying to break through the fence but a superflu which caused many deaths among their group.
Hershel rose to the challenge and almost single-handedly treated most of those infected, coming up with some home remedy treatments to give those struggling with the sickness a fighting chance while Daryl and a handful of others went on a complicated and dangerous medication run.
Meanwhile, The Governor – almost seeming to wish for his own death – finally comes across a new family in dire need of his deadly talents to survive and tries to find his soul again, which quickly becomes a lost cause when he is found by a member of his old group who’s now in charge of a band of tough but inexperienced fighters.
After a few close calls and a couple of brutal murders, The Governor decides the best place for his new followers is Rick’s prison. So, after taking two of Rick’s comrades captive (no, it will not be revealed here who they are), The Governor demands that Rick and the rest leave the prison or else they face a bloody battle that they could not hope to win.
Riveting, suspenseful, and tragic, The Walking Dead season four midseason finale has more action, explosions, and deaths than in any other episode of the series to date. There have been two standout performances thus far this season which should be, hopefully, remembered during Emmy nominations. One is Scott Wilson’s portrayal of Hershel, the moral center of the group who’s always willing to risk his life for so many others and whose kindness, strength, and wisdom have been responsible for saving many of those infected with the superflu.
The second standout performance was delivered by David Morrissey for his chilling and even at times touching portrayal of The Governor who seemed to truly try to redeem himself but whose darker and stronger nature was too strong to remain dormant for long. He delivers a powerful performance and has a commanding presence when he’s on screen.
The pacing and writing this season have been much tighter and more original, with less focus on older and tired storylines. The production and make-up are still first-rate, with wonderful/horrible-looking zombies who seem to be possibly getting just a little smarter about how to break through a fence.
With the loss of so many characters in this episode including two main ones (still not revealing in this review who they are), it will be difficult to wait until early February to see where and what is next for Rick, Daryl, Maggie, and the other survivors.
RZA became friends with Paul Walker after working with the actor on the movie Brick Mansion and the two hit it off, connecting over fatherhood and their shared passions. “Destiny Bends,” a new song written by RZA specifically about Paul, is his way of honoring the memory of Walker who died as the result of a fiery car crash on November 30, 2013.
RZA made the track available via SoundCloud and posted this introduction to the song:
“This song, entitled ‘Destiny Bends’ was written last night after hearing the tragic news of the loss of a good man named Paul Walker. I met Paul on the set of the film Brick Mansion, where we talked, laughed, and exchanged ideas of life and fatherhood. I only knew him personally for less than a year, but we knew each other through our work and art. We saw in each other a kindred spirit of men coming from unlikely circumstances, and rising to be the light and beacon of our family and loved ones. Men who learned the joy and pains of love in life, and success, while coming to realize that nothing is more important than family, friendship, and the brotherhood of humanity.
Millions of people get to know an artist or movie star through their work, but few are allowed to cross each others’ paths and see through the veil of stardom and find the common denominator that we share. As all physical things will decay and wither away, film, art, and music remain longer than the vessel that delivered them. In this vein, the one thing we can’t take away or give back is time. So, thus, time is the most precious gift. I dedicated my time to compose this song with my two sons and new friend Will Wells, who was kind enough to sing and perform it for me. We dedicate it to Paul Walker. A good man. We had plans to continue working with each other in the future. It seemed destined, but ‘destiny bends.’
*Note* This song is not for criticism, it’s just a sketch demo. Please enjoy and reflect.

Peter Jackson hasn’t been showing off more than just a brief glimpse here and there of Smaug from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, but Air New Zealand’s providing a much better look at the dragon on the side of its The Hobbit B777-300. Dubbed “The Airline of Middle-Earth,” Air New Zealand has released a time lapse video showing off the wrapping of the plane with the Smaug design.
The Plot:
The film continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens on December 13, 2013.
