New ‘Frozen’ Clip: “Big Summer Blowout”

Showing off a new one minute clip is Disney’s animated film Frozen now playing in theaters, going up against the second weekend of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Spike Lee’s remake of Oldboy, and Jason Statham’s latest action film, Homefront. There are a lot of choices this holiday weekend, however Frozen‘s all alone when it comes to family-friendly entertainment. Plus, it has the whole wintery theme complete with a talking snowman going for it as well as the fact that it’s a product of the Mouse House.

Will it be strong enough to take first place away from the Hunger Games franchise’s second entry? Pre-release estimates had the two films engaged in a tough battle for the top of the box office chart, but the odds aren’t in Frozen‘s favor to topple the current box office leader.

The Plot: Walt Disney Animation Studios, the studio behind Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph, presents Frozen, a stunning big-screen comedy adventure. Fearless optimist Anna (voice of Kristen Bell) sets off on an epic journey — teaming up with rugged mountain man Kristoff (voice of Jonathan Groff) and his loyal reindeer Sven — to find her sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel), whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter.

Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls, and a hilarious snowman named Olaf (voice of Josh Gad), Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom.

The Voice is bringing in OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder as the show’s first in-house producer and songwriter. Tedder, who previously acted as an advisor, will be helping this season’s three final contestants prepare for the big finale.

As the show’s songwriter, Tedder will be penning an original song for each of the three artists to perform on December 17, 2013. According to NBC, that single will be available on iTunes immediately after the show.

“Ryan is a brilliant songwriter and on the forefront of today’s music scene. His contributions to The Voice will be invaluable in both his work with our artists and in creating a song that will capture the essence of our show,” said Paul Telegdy, President of Alternative and Late Night Programming, NBC Entertainment.

The season of The Voice has been averaging 15.2 million viewers and is the #1 unscripted series on NBC, CBS, ABC, and Fox.

Tedder is the founder and lead singer/songwriter of OneRepublic and producer of artists such as Adele, Beyonce, Leona Lewis, Maroon 5, and Carrie Underwood. He has sold over 130 million records worldwide and has held over 75 #1 chart positions across the globe. The six-time Grammy nominee took home his first Grammy for Album of the Year award at the 2012 Grammy Awards for his work on Adele’s 21.

OneRepublic took the world by storm in 2007 with their debut release Dreaming Out Loud. The album included the smash single “Apologize,” which shattered digital sales and airplay records worldwide. The band’s sophomore album, 2009’s Waking Up, produced three singles: “All the Right Moves,” “Secrets,” and “Good Life.”

OneRepublic released their third studio album, Native, on March 26 where it debuted at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. The set includes hits “If I Lose Myself,” “Feel Again” and new single “Counting Stars,” which just broke into the top 10 at Top 40 radio this week.

The band has toured the world, headlining dates in the U.S. and Europe and opening for Bon Jovi and U2.

Martin Sheen leads the cast of BBC Factual Productions/Animal Planet’s dramatic film The Whale based on the true story of the sinking of the whaling ship, Essex, as recalled by First Mate Owen Chase and Captain Pollard. Written by Terry Cafolla, The Whale also stars Jonas Armstrong, Adam Rayner, Paul Kaye, David Gyasi, Jolyon Coy, Jassa Ahluwalia, John Boyega, and Ferdinand Kingsley.

The two-hour film was shot in Malta and, according to Animal Planet, features breathtaking underwater footage.

The Plot:

Based on true events, the film tells one of history’s greatest stories of survival at sea as Martin Sheen portrays Old Thomas Nickerson, who tells a story of his life as a cabin boy on the ill-fated voyage of the whaling ship the Essex. The action-packed narrative follows Nickerson as, against all odds, he comes through the worst that nature throws at him while growing up fast in the process.

He faces the destructive force of sea storms, the power of whales, the brutal desolation of the sun and sea after the shipwreck, and, finally, the grim realities of dark deeds as his only means of survival.

Bon Jovi, Taylor Swift, and Prince William Sing “Livin’ on a Prayer”

No, that headline isn’t the start of a really dumb joke. Prince William did join Jon Bon Jovi and Taylor Swift on stage at Kensington Palace to sing “Livin’ on a Prayer” and, yes, there’s a video to prove such an odd event did actually take place.

Jon Bon Jovi and Taylor Swift performed separately at a charity event supporting Centrepoint held at Kensington Palace, and Bon Jovi invited Swift and Prince William on stage to help with the song’s chorus. Although the future King of England was a bit stiff at first, he did ultimately get into his role as a backup singer. Meanwhile, Swift had no problem whatsoever getting into her supporting part.

Suits star Patrick J Adams, George Lopez, Dash Mihok, Nia Vardalos, Cory Hardrict, Chris Mulkey, and Josh Hopkins will star in the independent film Car Dogs, currently shooting in Arizona. The comedy/drama is being directed by Adam Collis (Sunset Strip) from a script by Mark Edward King, with Stefanie Epstein, Adam Robinson, and F. Miguel Valenti producing.

The film is working closely with Arizona State University where Collis teaches, and students are involved in behind-the-scenes positions.

“We have almost 80 students who have signed up for internships to work on the film,” explained Collis. “These aren’t just typical set p.a.’s – we have these students working alongside professional crew members, getting hands-on experience in set decoration, production scheduling, social media and marketing, post-production, every phase of the process.”

The Plot: Car Dogs centers on dealership manager Mark Chamberlain (Adams), who is under pressure from his father to meet a massive sales quota by the end of the day. His cutthroat and determined sales force do whatever it takes to meet their goal. The film pulls back the proverbial curtain on the inner workings of a world that everyone knows, but only from the outside.

Producers Guild Picks 2013’s Five Best Documentaries

Producers Guild Documentary NomineesThe Producers Guild of America (PGA) just further clouded the already muddy picture when it comes to the best 2013 documentary films with their selection of the five best of the year. PGA voters didn’t go for obvious choices like The Act of Killing or even Stories We Tell and instead selected We Steal Secrets and four documentaries that haven’t garnered much buzz. It’ll be interesting to see how many of the PGA choices will wind up earning Oscar nominations and how many of these choices will earn year-end awards from various critics groups.

And the nominees are:

A Place at the Table

Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story

Life According to Sam

We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks

Which Way is the Front Line From Here? The Life and Time of Tim Hetherington

The winner will be announced during the 2014 Producers Guild Awards to be held on January 19, 2014 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
