KMFDM Concert Review and Photo Gallery

KMFDM Concert Review
KMFDM Concert (Photo © Richard Chavez)

KMFDM played a nice, intimate show at The Glass House in Pomona, CA on November 13, 2013 and when I say intimate, I mean intimate. The venue wasn’t even halfway full, which doesn’t make sense considering how popular Kaptain K’s band is and also how long they’ve been around. Needless to say, no one was complaining.

Kaptain K and his band mates Lucia, Andy, Jules, and Steve had an awesome time playing songs like “Kunst” from their album with the same title and other great hits including “Light,” “Tohuvabohu,” “Son of a Gun,” “A Drug Against War” and many others. They played a total of 19 tracks and ended with “Anarchy” (from their Symbols album) featuring Bradley B Chant from the opening act Chant.

All in all, the show was great. Lucia with her banshee-like screams and Sasha’s German vocals during certain tracks made the night complete. They have a couple of shows left during this tour and will be getting ready for a 30-year anniversary – and I’m sure another tour celebrating the anniversary. So until next year…

Netflix is Resurrecting ‘The Killing’

The Killing Renewed for Season 4

It’s apparently impossible to kill The Killing. For those fans of the series who thought it was all over…it’s not. Netflix has just announced they’ve made a deal with Fox Television Studios for a fourth and final season of the drama series, which will air exclusively on Netflix.

Season four of The Killing will consist of six episodes that will all be available on the day of the series’ final season premiere.

“The rich, serialized storytelling in The Killing thrives on Netflix, and we believe that it is only fitting to give Sarah Linden and Stephen Holder a proper send-off,” said Cindy Holland, vice president of original content for Netflix. “We are looking forward to offering fans – both existing and new – a series that we know is perfectly suited for on-demand viewing.”

“It’s a true testament to The Killing creator Veena Sud, and the stellar cast led so compellingly by Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman, that fans remained so passionate about the show. We’re gratified that our partners at Netflix recognized this, and are giving us the opportunity to complete the story in a way that will be satisfying to our loyal audience,” added Fox Television Studios President David Madden.

The Killing Plot:

Based on the Danish series Forbrydelsen, The Killing follows various murder investigations led by homicide detectives “Sarah Linden” (Mireille Enos) and “Stephen Holder” (Joel Kinnaman). Seasons one and two chronicled the “Rosie Larsen case,” with Linden and Holder investigating the murder of a teenage girl. Picking up one year after the close of that investigation, season three followed the detectives on their search for a runaway girl, leading them to discover a gruesome string of murders that connected to a previous investigation by Linden.

Okay, okay, calm down. It’s not really a photo from the Star Wars Episode VII movie itself which hasn’t even begun shooting; it’s a photo behind the scenes featuring a familiar-looking droid. Movie Review: ‘Dallas Buyers Club’

Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club

“Newsflash for you all, there ain’t nothing out there that can kill Ron Woodroof in thirty days,” says Ron Woodroof (Matthew McConaughey) to Dr. Eve Saks (Jennifer Garner) and a colleague after being told he is HIV-positive and has most likely only has thirty days to live in the dramatic film Dallas Buyers Club.

In 1985, Texas cowboy Ron Woodroof’s wild days of womanizing, drinking and bull-riding came to a screeching stop when he discovered he was diagnosed with HIV. Refusing to believe he had what was considered a homosexual illness at the time, Ron initially tries to blow it off and deny he has anything but a cold. But as he begins to do some research and discovers all of his symptoms are HIV-related, Ron quickly begins to accept the fact he has the virus but not that he will die in thirty days.

Shunned and abandoned by his old friends and not qualifying for any experimental medical trials due to the severity of his condition, Ron begins tracking down alternative forms of treating the illness and other drugs which are not legal in the States but are having some success in treating the sickness south of the border. Ron has some success with the drugs and realizes there is money to be made by transporting them over the border to get them to HIV patients in Texas. Bypassing and ignoring the law and the medical establishment, Ron teams up with Rayon (Jared Leto) – a cross-dressing homosexual who’s also HIV-positive he met once in the hospital getting emergency treatment – because Rayon knows many who are infected and are desperate for the illegal medicine. Struggling to find a loophole to use to get around selling the drugs illegally, Ron starts up his own business – The Dallas Buyers Club – where the clients pay dues to be a member of the club but the drugs are free.

Based on a true story, The Dallas Buyers Club is an engaging story effectively taking the moviegoing audience back to a time when HIV and AIDS were running rampant through America and the public’s fear and lack of knowledge about the virus and the disease was at an all-time high. Matthew McConaughey delivers what’s sure to be an Oscar nominated performance as Ron Woodroof, a beer drinking, hard-living cowboy whose world is turned upside down when he learns he’s contracted the deadly virus but finds the determination and the willpower to do whatever it takes to treat his condition and lengthen his lifespan and eventually become a voice for many of those fighting the same battle. McConaughey, who’s almost unrecognizable with his weight loss and his change in appearance, captures both the deceptive con man looking to cash in on any opportunity and the terrified cowboy who desperately wants his life to have meaning. It’s his best performance since We Are Marshall.

Jared Leto gives the best performance of his career as Rayon, Ron’s unlikely business partner and way into the infected homosexual community. It’s a sensitive, troubling, and at times uncomfortable performance of a person who’s become an outcast in the eyes of society and Leto is terrific as he show Rayon’s struggle to keep on living. Jennifer Garner is wasted in the film as Eve, the doctor who at first resents and fears Ron’s ‘Buyers Club’ but eventually begins to see some of the real good he’s accomplishing while the medical professionals are still struggling to find treatments that work. It’s a role that feels oversimplified and never comes across authentic. In fact, it’s almost as though her character was written in to have a caring, sympathetic, heterosexual woman doctor for Ron to win over and flirt with…sigh.

The direction and script capture wonderfully the paranoia, prejudice, and fear even among the medical community of the HIV virus and the uncertainty of how anyone could contract it and, worse yet, not having any way of treating or managing it.

The film’s pacing is a problem with the slow start and boring montage of Ron sneaking around and dealing behind hospitals to get medicine illegally as well as the number of scenes of Ron giving medicine to clients at his ‘clinic’. It becomes tedious and unnecessary, as are most of the scenes in the second half of the film between McConaughey and Garner.

Dallas Buyers Club is an intriguing movie capturing one man’s desperate fight to live and make a difference while he still can.

Behind the Scenes of ‘Dallas Buyers Club – Exploring “Take It or Leave It”

This three-minute video gives movie fans a peek behind the scenes at the shooting of a pivotal scene in Dallas Buyers Club. The scene spotlighted in the behind-the-scenes video involves Matthew McConaughey as Ron Woodroof and Jared Leto as Rayon and features director Jean-Marc Vallée explaining how it was set up and shot.

Dallas Buyers Club is currently in theaters.

The Plot:

Matthew McConaughey stars in Dallas Buyers Club as real-life Texas cowboy Ron Woodroof, whose free-wheeling life was overturned in 1985 when he was diagnosed as HIV-positive and given 30 days to live. These were the early days of the AIDS epidemic, and the U.S. was divided over how to combat the virus. Ron, now shunned and ostracized by many of his old friends, and bereft of government-approved effective medicines, decided to take matters in his own hands, tracking down alternative treatments from all over the world by means both legal and illegal.

Bypassing the establishment, the entrepreneurial Woodroof joined forces with an unlikely band of renegades and outcasts – who he once would have shunned – and established a hugely successful “buyers’ club.” Their shared struggle for dignity and acceptance is a uniquely American story of the transformative power of resilience.

Flowers in the Attic, the V.C. Andrews creepy tale of children locked away in the attic by their mother, is once again the source material for a film. In 1987 Louise Fletcher and Victoria Tennant starred in Flowers in the Attic, while this time around it’s Heather Graham, Ellen Burstyn, Kiernan Shipka, Mason Dye, and Dylan Bruce in starring roles. The 2014 Lifetime version directed by Deborah Chow (The High Cost of Living) will air on the network on January 18, 2014 at 8pm ET/PT.

The Plot:

Flowers in the Attic weaves the twisted story of the Dollanganger kids who, after the unexpected death of their father, are convinced by their mother Corrine (Graham) to stay hidden in the attic of their wealthy grandparents’ mansion so she can reclaim the family fortune. But as her visits begin to wane after she becomes involved with a new husband (Bruce), the children endure unimaginable treatment at the hands of their ruthless grandmother Olivia Foxworth (Burstyn). As years go by and the eldest children Cathy (Shipka) and Christopher (Dye) come of age, both emotionally and physically, their family’s sordid past entraps them further as they look to each other for comfort.
