Paul McCartney Performs on Jimmy Kimmel Live

Jimmy Kimmel closed down Hollywood Blvd in front of his studio on September 23, 2013 for a live performance by Sir Paul McCartney. The free concert in the street came after McCartney made his first appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, kicking off the fall 2013 television season and kicking the late night talk show battle up a notch.

Halloween Horror Nights Celebrates Another Year of Terror

Showbiz Junkies was at Universal Studios to kick off the 2013 Halloween Horror Nights (HHN) for both Florida and California. Customary each year on the first day of HHN is the infamous Eyegore Awards hosted by McKenzie Westmore. This year’s show paid tribute to Insidious, The Walking Dead, Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead), Danny Trejo (El Cucuy), and Black Sabbath, with all new mazes and plenty of accolades.

Introduced by Sharon Osbourne, Geezer Butler and Ozzy Osbourne stormed the stage to accept an award paying tribute to Black Sabbath’s 43-year history. Ozzy said, “It has been an amazing year for us with a number #1 record, a #1 world tour, and now this (award), what more can I say.”

The crowd went crazy with a standing ovation, giving Black Sabbath an endorsement not necessarily shared when the band was playing in the early years of their career. This year, Universal introduced the new maze called “Black Sabbath 13 3D,” inspired by the lyrics of the band. On opening night, the Black Sabbath maze in California had the longest lines, at one point over two hours to get in, showing the huge popularity of the legendary band and the new maze.

My favorite speech of the show was from legendary genre actor Bruce Campbell who accepted an award for his extensive horror film career. Looking very svelte in a white suit, Bruce amusingly discussed his reaction to receiving an Eyegore Award.

“What’s that?” I asked. They said, “You never heard of the Eyegore Awards?” I said, “No! I don’t know what an award is!” There was huge laughter from the crowd in approval of the self-deprecating actor. Bruce also said, “My last award was from Little League, and that was for being the most improved player. You know what that means – I sucked at the beginning of the season!”

Everyone cheered for the actor who is best known by horror fans as Ash from the Evil Dead films.

Other highlights of the show included an award for The Walking Dead, with cast member Melissa McBride accepting the statuette. Insidious film producer Jason Blum and writer Leigh Whannell each accepted an award. Danny Trejo accepted an honorary award for his career in the genre, during which he made a funny remark when he claimed he had a face for doing these kinds of movies.

After the Eyegore Awards ended, they let the press loose to enjoy HHN.

The mazes this year were all very good. Creative director John Murdy talked to the press two weeks prior to the opening and discussed in great depth the amount of detail that goes into HHN, including replicating sets, using the correct make-up from the films, and having a team in both Florida and California that can take on such a huge event.

Universal puts a lot of resources into licensing horror franchises and that gives the fans a chance to experience the films in a very unique way. My recommendation is to get to the park early and try to get to the more popular mazes first to beat the crowd. Halloween Horror Nights is always a lot of fun…but are you brave enough?

First Look: ‘Bonnie & Clyde’ with Emile Hirsch

Bonnie and Clyde Miniseries Details
Holliday Grainger and Emile Hirsch star in 'Bonnie & Clyde' (Photo by Joseph Viles / Copyright 2013)

The tale of outlaws Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow comes to the small screen in Lifetime’s Bonnie & Clyde starring Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild) and Holliday Grainger (Jane Eyre, Anna Karenina). 1967’s Bonnie and Clyde still holds up, but A&E Network is apparently aiming for a younger generation of viewers to catch on to the story with this version finding Hirsch and Grainger tackling the characters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway earned Oscar nominations for portraying.

Will this Bonnie & Clyde hold up equally as well as the ’60s version? No. Is it worth investing four hours of your time over two nights? Based on the trailer, the answer’s no. But there’s always a possibility the two-part movie is better than it appears in this first video clip.

The Plot:

Bonnie & Clyde retells the fascinating tale of the legendary couple whose crime spree enraptured the American public. Rumored to have a sixth sense to see events before they happened, Barrow was always able to stay one step ahead of the law as they escaped capture time and again. His one blind spot was Parker, who was intent on becoming famous and fed on the alluring media attention, pushing Barrow to commit riskier and more dangerous crimes to generate bigger headlines and make them the most famous criminals of the modern era.

‘Dexter’ Ends With Record High Numbers

Dexter Series Finale Thank Yous

Just as expected, viewers tuned in in record numbers to say good-bye to our favorite killer of serial killers. Showtime’s Dexter aired its final episode after eight seasons on Sunday, September 22, 2013, and although there are rumors of a spin-off, we’ve now seen the last of many of the familiar faces from the Dexter universe.

The viewership for the series final set a new record for the series, with 2.8 million viewers at 9pm and 3.3 million overall for the night. And the eighth and final season was also the biggest ratings earner of the show’s run, capped by the series finale which became the show’s “highest-rated telecast ever and the biggest audience ever for an original episode in Showtime history.”

Just as we as viewers had to say good-bye to Dexter so did the cast of the popular, critically acclaimed series, putting together this farewell video and thanking the fans:

Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman are currently teamed up on the screen in the dramatic thriller Prisoners directed by Denis Villeneuve, and it’s his performance in that film that’s earned him the Hollywood Supporting Actor award at the 17th Annual Hollywood Film Awards. Gyllenhaal will pick up the award at the Hollywood Film Awards Gala Ceremony on October 21, 2013 in Beverly Hills, CA.

Hollywood Film Awards founder Carlos de Abreu made the announcement, stating: “We are thrilled to present the Hollywood Supporting Actor Award to Jake Gyllenhaal for his unforgettable performance in Prisoners. His is a truly compelling, subtly layered portrayal of a man tasked with the impossible and driven by the demons of his own past. Jake has given a myriad of outstanding performances throughout his career, but his work in Prisoners delivers a new level of complexity, as reflected in the rave reviews the film has received.”

Oscar nominee Gyllenhaal’s other credits include End of Watch, Source Code, Brokeback Mountain, Donnie Darko, Jarhead, Brothers, Zodiac, and October Sky. He’ll next be seen in Enemy, directed by Prisoners helmer Villeneuve, and has Nightcrawler and Everest in the works.

The Plot of Prisoners:

Prisoners is an edge-of-your-seat dramatic thriller that poses the question: How far would you go to protect your family? Keller Dover (Jackman) is facing every parent’s worst nightmare. His six-year-old daughter, Anna, is missing, together with her young friend, Joy, and as minutes turn to hours, panic sets in. The best lead is a dilapidated RV that had earlier been parked on their street.

Heading the investigation, Detective Loki (Gyllenhaal) arrests its driver, Alex Jones (Paul Dano), but a lack of evidence forces his release. As the police pursue multiple leads and pressure mounts, knowing his child’s life is at stake the frantic Dover decides he has no choice but to take matters into his own hands. But just how far will this desperate father go to protect his family?
