Due to his scenery-chewing skills in Piranha, Veronica Mars creative mastermind Rob Thomas has chosen Jerry O’Connell to play Sheriff Dan Lamb in the Veronica Mars film. Dan is a new Lamb brother (the amoral older brother of Don) and Thomas says he hopes audiences will “love to hate” the character.

‘Sharknado’ Spawns a Sequel

Syfy’s delivering yet another reason to be afraid of sharks with the announcement of a sequel to the campy made-for-TV movie Sharknado. Yes, the network’s ready to rain down sharks on a town once again – as the toothy predators will be back, but this time they’ll be terrorizing the good citizens of New York City.

And because simply titling the sequel Sharknado 2 and leaving it at that would be taking the easy way out, Syfy’s offering up a Twitter contest in which fans can submit ideas for an appropriate subtitle. Tweet your suggestions to @SyfyMovies and make sure you use the #Sharknado hashtag.

Syfy’s planning to air the sequel in 2014. The original film was a social media hit, raking in 5,000 tweets per minute while it was on air.

Details on the Original Sharknado:

Up in the sky. It’s a bird. It’s a plane. No, it’s a…shark! A supersized storm sucks sharks from the ocean and hurls them onto land in the new Syfy Original Movie Sharknado.

In the movie, regulars of a beachside bar including owner Fin (Ian Ziering), bartender Nova (Casie Scerbo) and local drunk George (John Heard) team up with Fin’s ex-wife April (Tara Reid) to investigate the ecological nightmare that has sharks swimming through the streets of Los Angeles and falling from the skies.

Movie Review: ‘Turbo’

Turbo Movie

“Slow down for a second,” yells Chet (Paul Giamatti). “Are you kidding?! I’m never going slow again,” yells back Turbo (Ryan Reynolds), a garden snail who – after being exposed to some nitrous oxide in a freak accident – is now the fastest snail in the world in the animated comedy movie Turbo.

All his life Turbo has dreamed of going fast and of one day being in the Indy 500. Of course, being a snail, this seemed to be an impossible dream and made Turbo the laughingstock of the garden amongst all the garden snails. One night after accidentally breaking the television in the garage where Turbo always watches the car racing coverage, the sad snail slowly slugs away, moping. But after a freak accident involving nitrous oxide, Turbo discovers to his amazement he’s the fastest snail in the world.

The next day, Turbo uses his great speed to save his older brother Chet from a few hungry crows, and both of them get snailnapped by Tito (Michael Pena), a truck driver and taco salesman whose hobby is snail races. After showing off for Tito in his first race and making friends with the other snails led by Whiplash (Samuel L. Jackson), Turbo begins slowly indicating to Tito – as best a snail can – that he should enter him to race in the INDY 500.

Cute and funny, Turbo is a routine, predictable underdog story that’s elevated by its very talented voice cast. Paul Giamatti is perfect, bringing to life Chet, the overprotective big brother who just can’t bring himself to understand or support Turbo’s dream even after it becomes evident that his little brother is exceptionally fast.

Ryan Reynolds is solid as the voice of Turbo, the snail who dreams of speed but who deep down wants his brother’s support. It’s the snail brothers whose story has any kind of emotional impact and a little humor.

Samuel L. Jackson is…Samuel L. Jackson. As Whiplash, he’s the cool, laid-back leader of the racing snails. Thankfully there’s not too much of Whiplash, or Jackson would steal and upstage the film from the main characters.

The animation looks great with bright, vibrant colors, and the action on the screen will surely make the kids mesmerized in their seats. However, it’ll most likely leave parents glancing at their watches and waiting for the credits to roll. And, once again, there is no reason to spend the extra few dollars for the non-existent 3D effect.

Filled with laughs for the kids and good action scenes but missing anything worthwhile for adults, Turbo is sure to be a fun trip to the theater for the younger set but will leave the adults waiting at the finish line for it to finally end.

GRADE: C

Turbo opens in theaters on July 17, 2013 and is rated PG for some mild action and thematic elements.

Liev Schreiber, currently seen starring in Showtime’s Ray Donovan, will host the PBS series Superheroes: A Never-Ending Battle premiering on October 8, 2013 at 9pm ET. The series, which Schreiber narrates, is a behind the scenes look at comic books and superheroes.

The three-part series will also be available on DVD/Blu-ray on October 15th.

“A show about superheroes needs a superhuman force to lead it; Liev Schreiber was perfectly cast as Sabretooth in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and he is the perfect host for this series,” stated Michael Kantor, filmmaker behind Superheroes: A Never-Ending Battle and president of Ghost Light Films. “Liev’s commanding presence takes us through 75 years of heroes and villains — both in print and in real-life — as well as the multifaceted, multimedia industry whose characters continue to enthrall Americans and fans all over the world. We promise that after watching this series, no parent will ever dare to throw away their kid’s comic books again…”

The Series Details [Courtesy of PBS]:

Superheroes: A Never-Ending Battle is the first documentary to examine the dawn of the comic book genre and its powerful legacy, as well as the evolution of the characters who leapt from the pages over the last 75 years and their ongoing worldwide cultural impact. It chronicles how these “disposable diversions” were subject to intense government scrutiny for their influence on American children and how they were created in large part by the children of immigrants whose fierce loyalty to a new homeland laid the foundation for a multi-billion-dollar industry that is an influential part of our national identity. Among the notable on-camera talents in the film are Stan Lee, Adam West, Lynda Carter, Pulitzer Prize winners Michael Chabon and Jules Feiffer, and interviews with the late greats Joe Simon (co-creator of Captain America) and Jerry Robinson (who helped create the Joker).

Superheroes Episode Synopsis:

“Truth, Justice, and the American Way” (1938-1958) – October 8, 2013, 9:00 p.m. ET
During the Depression, the popularity of dozens of superhero characters opens the door for a new generation of artists and writers. World War II creates a patriotic fervor for star-spangled adventurers to represent the American spirit at war and on the home front, but in the 1950s, superheroes are caught in the fire of government scrutiny and regulation. When the thrilling Adventures of Superman is broadcast on the new medium of television, America’s first and greatest superhero leads the entire comic book industry to renewed strength.

“Great Power, Great Responsibility” (1959-1977) – October 15, 2013, 9:00 p.m. ET
A new breed of superhero emerges in the 1960s, inspired by the age of atomic energy and space travel and, in turn, inspiring artists of the time. The pop art movement draws heavily on comic books, with superhero images appearing in the works of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Civil rights in America and other social issues make their way onto the page as black superheroes emerge with powerhouses such as the Black Panther and Luke Cage. The pages of Green Lantern/Green Arrow address social issues in their relevant storylines, and comic books are forced to confront the reality of an increasingly complex world.

“A Hero Can Be Anyone” (1978-Present) – October 22, 2013, 9:00 p.m. ET
This episode captures the enthusiasm for superheroes as they are embraced in all forms of media and by all demographics, beginning with the historic Superman movie featuring Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel. In 1986, Batman is overhauled as The Dark Knight to reflect the nocturnal underside of his character, and Watchmen brings new sophistication to comic book narratives, illuminating a violent and politicized world. In the burgeoning new millennium, superheroes have taken over popular culture with feature films, television shows and video games complementing a new generation of web-based comics that bring superhero adventures to every corner of the world.
