Veronica Mars mastermind Rob Thomas wanted Leighton Meester to reprise her role as ‘Carrie Bishop’ in the Veronica Mars movie, however she’s busy working on another film and is unavailable for the movie version of the popular TV series.

“One of the reasons I wanted Leighton, beyond her talent/beauty/history in the show, was that we needed a performer who could sing in this important role,” explained Meester. “Once it became evident that we couldn’t make Leighton’s schedule work, I decided to cast someone from a band I already wanted in the movie.”

The band Thomas is referring to is Twin Sister and he’s tapped lead singer Andrea Estella to tackle the role of Carrie Bishop. Thomas also confirmed he’ll be using a couple of Twin Sister songs in the movie.

Commenting on her casting, Estella had this to say to fans in a message to Veronica Mars Kickstarter backers:

“Hello Backers!

This is the first movie I’ve ever appeared in.

I had never seen Veronica Mars before all of this. I’ve been increasingly interested in finding new TV shows to plow through. I watched the Veronica Mars Pilot and was totally into it! It’s the exact kind of show I would get obsessed with, so it’s been a bit of dream to be in a movie, especially being a messed up rock princess. How could I say no? I think the VM fans are going to be very happy!

Thank you Rob Thomas for thinking of Twin Sister and myself. And super thanks to everyone who donated to Kickstarter! What fun to help fund a film you’re really into. Such an amazing, fun, dreamy, kawaii, fantasy experience!!

Andrea”

Glee Star Cory Monteith Dead at 31

Cory Monteith who played Finn Hudson on four seasons of Fox’s Glee was found dead on Saturday, July 13, 2013 in a Vancouver hotel room. Monteith was discovered in his room by Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel employees after failing to check out of the hotel by the designated time. According to the police, Monteith had been dead a few hours when he was found.

No foul play was suspected and an autopsy will be performed on Monday.

Monteith had chosen to leave Glee last March with a few episodes left in season four in order to enter a rehab facility for a substance abuse problem. He’d also battled addiction problems when he was 19 and had sought treatment at that time.

Fox and Glee executives issued a statement, saying: “We are deeply saddened by this tragic news. Cory was an exceptional talent and an even more exceptional person. He was a true joy to work with and we will all miss him tremendously. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.”
And the Vancouver Police Department’s Acting Chief Doug LePard stated:

Shortly after noon today, the Vancouver Police received a call from the BC Ambulance Service regarding a sudden death in a room on the 21st floor of the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel at 1038 Canada Place in downtown Vancouver.

Police attended within minutes of the call and paramedics advised the man in the room was clearly deceased. Coroner’s staff did attend the scene.

The deceased has been identified as 31-year-old actor Cory Monteith, who achieved great fame on the popular TV series Glee.

Before I give further information, on behalf of the Vancouver Police, I want to pass on our condolences to the family, friends, castmates and millions of fans of Mr. Monteith. As was the case in countless homes, I watched Glee regularly with my daughters, and I know there will be shock and sadness in many households with the news of his tragic death.

Mr. Monteith checked into the hotel in July 6th and was due to check out of the room today. There were others with Mr. Monteith in his room earlier last night, but video and fob key entries show him returning to his room by himself in the early morning hours and we believe he was alone when he died.

When he missed his check-out time, staff went to the room at noon and found his body.

We know there will be considerable interest in this case, and we have detectives assigned to the case who attended with our Forensic Identification Unit to examine the scene, to ensure to the extent possible that there are no unanswered questions.

Hotel video has been secured as well as room access records. Our investigators have spoken with hotel staff, who are providing the utmost in cooperation.

The Coroner will be determining the next steps with respect to establishing cause of death, but all indications are that there was no foul play.”

Our thoughts are with Monteith’s family and friends at this very difficult time.

The Way, Way Back Movie Review

Reviewed by Kevin Finnerty

“Duncan, you asleep back there buddy? Duncan?” “What?” “On a scale of one to ten what do you think you are?” “I dunno. A six.” “I think you’re a three,” says Trent (Steve Carell) to Duncan (Liam James), the shy 14 year old son of his girlfriend, Pam (Toni Collette), as he drives them plus his daughter Steph (Zoe Levin) to his beach house for a family summer getaway in the comedy/drama The Way Way Back.

After arriving at the summer house, meeting neighbors Betty (Allison Janney) and her daughter Susanna (AnnaSophia Robb), and practically being forced to go to the beach, Duncan can’t wait to get away from the summer beach house and away from his mother’s overbearing boyfriend. Duncan borrows an old bicycle and rides into town where he meets Owen (Sam Rockwell) playing a video game and is almost instantly drawn to his affable personality. The next day Duncan once again rides the bike into town and finds the Water Wizz water park where Owen is the manager. Owen, realizing that Duncan is a lonely, likeable kid with no confidence, gives him a tour of the park and offers him a part-time job to help out and clean up accidents. Soon, Duncan is spending as much time as he can at the water park and with Owen who quickly becomes a surrogate big brother and odd mentor to the struggling teen.

Funny, sweet, but uneven in tone, The Way Way Back is a coming-of age story that benefits greatly from a stand-out performance by Sam Rockwell. Rockwell steals the film as the affable jokester and mentor who teaches Duncan not to take life so seriously and teaches him to have some fun while discovering it’s okay to laugh at yourself sometimes. Young Liam James is very effective as Duncan, the shy, awkward, and sensitive young man who’s struggling with a home life that he’s desperate to escape from and for whom the water park and Owen offer just that refuge. The best scenes in the movie are between Rockwell and James.

Another scene-stealing performance is by Allison Janney as the loud, free-spirited neighbor Betty. Her character by far gets the most laugh-out-loud lines in the film. Steve Carell delivers a solid performance as the oppressive boyfriend who never misses an opportunity to wittle down what little confidence Duncan has. It’s a very different role for Carell who nails the part.

The one big problem with the The Way Way Back is with its structure. The constant going back to the beach house and having scene after scene of the adults getting drunk, being silly and sometimes mean and experiencing what seems to be a mid-life crisis is unnecessary. Everything the audience needs to know about the family setting and nightmare that is Duncan’s reality is shown incredibly well in the first 20 minutes of the film. Almost all of the beach house scenes after that are a waste and a distraction from the main story. The only exception would be the rainy day scene where the family is stuck inside all day playing a board game and Pam begins to discover a sad truth about Trent.

The first crush/love sub-plot between Duncan and Susanna is never given any real time to develop into anything the audience will be able to connect with or identify with. It’s just another distraction from the real story of Owen giving Duncan the insight and fun he’ll need in order to deal with and survive his family life.

The Way Way Back is a charming and engaging coming-of-age film which movie-going audiences are sure to enjoy due to the solid chemistry between Rockwell and James.

GRADE: B-

The Way, Way Back is rated PG-13 for thematic elements, language, some sexual content and brief drug material.
