Book Review: ‘Finding Colin Firth’

Finding Colin Firth Book Review

Colin Firth is coming to a small town in Maine and the lives of three women will never be the same. Finding Colin Firth by Mia March centers on the converging lives of three women in Boothbay Harbor and the movie, starring Colin Firth, being filmed there.

22-year-old Bea Crane has just found out she is adopted and her world is completely shaken. Her birth mother, Veronica Russo, is a waitress who has recently relocated to her hometown of Boothbay Harbor. Veronica has continually updated her wherabouts and contact information through the adoption agency that handled Bea’s adoption. 16 when she became pregnant, Veronica was sent to Hope Haven – a local home for unwed mothers – by a very unsupportive family. She hasn’t seen or heard from her daughter since moments after giving birth. Famous in the small town town for her wonderful “elixir” pies, she has come home to face her past and, hopefully, rid herself of the pain she has held inside the last 22 years.

Bea quits her dead-end waitress job and travels to Maine to locate and meet her birth mother. Unsure if she will have the nerve and emotional strength to actually meet Veronica, we follow along as Bea tracks down the events and people surrounding her birth. Will she meet Veronica and her birth father? What will their reaction be to seeing her? And, what will her reaction be to seeing them?

The third woman is Gemma Hendricks. Gemma and her husband live in New York, where he is a prosecutor and she is a journalist. Things aren’t great, though, because Gemma has just lost her job, her husband wants to move to a small town next to his overbearing parents, and her pregnancy test has come back positive. Having spent summers with friends in Boothbay Harbor, she goes there for a weekend that turns into three weeks when she lands a job with the regional newspaper. Her assignment is to write a human interest article on Hope Haven. At the same time, she is hoping to get an interview with Colin Firth in the hopes that this will greatly help out of her career’s downward spiral.

Gemma’s research for the Hope Haven article leads her to Veronica and Bea. The complex lives of the three women, decisions they made and need to make, and a chance to experience life in a small town are wonderfully woven in this book. Throw in each woman’s enchantment with Colin Firth and a whole town bristling with the excitement of catching a glance of him, and the result is a great read.

‘The White Queen’ Has a Gorgeous New Poster

The White Queen Poster

Starz recently released the first full trailer for The White Queen, and now we’ve got this new – and bloody – poster to feast our eyes on. This new poster features Rebecca Ferguson (‘The White Queen’) looking fearless as she holds a sword, unaware or not caring that her hand is bleeding.

Starz is debuting the series in August.

The Plot:

A story of love and lust, seduction and deception, betrayal and murder, it is uniquely told through the perspective of three different, yet equally relentless women – Elizabeth Woodville, Margaret Beaufort, and Anne Neville. In their quest for power, they will scheme, manipulate and seduce their way onto the English throne.

The year is 1464, before the Tudor dynasty ruled the country, and war has been ravaging throughout England over who is the rightful King. It is a bitter dispute between two sides of the same family, The House of York and The House of Lancaster.

The House of York’s young and handsome Edward IV is crowned King of England with the help of the master manipulator, Lord Warwick “The Kingmaker.” But when Edward falls in love with a beautiful Lancastrian commoner, Elizabeth Woodville, Warwick’s plan to control the throne comes crashing down.

A violent, high-stakes struggle ensues between Elizabeth, her most fierce adversary, Lancastrian Margaret Beaufort, and Anne Neville, the pawn in her father’s power game – each woman vying for the crown.

Jessie J Leaves ‘The Voice U.K.’

The Voice UK

Jessie J says she’s leaving The Voice U.K., announcing her departure by saying she’s unable to continue with the next season of the show because she’ll be busy touring and keeping up with promotional commitments. However, BBC hasn’t confirmed the status of the remaining The Voice coaches will.i.am, Tom Jones and Danny O’Donoghue.

“I’ve absolutely loved my time on The Voice and I hope everyone saw and knows how passionately I felt about the show,” said Jessie J. “However, I can’t wait to promote my new record around the world, and that has to take priority.”

She did say that despite the fact she won’t be back, she’ll be watching to see what happens on the show next season. “I shall be keeping a very close eye on series 3, showing my support in every way I can and really hope that in some way that I can be part of the show.”

And Mark Linsey, Controller of Entertainment Commissioning said, “We’re so sorry to see Jessie go as she’s been an exceptional coach on, and advocate for, The Voice, but we totally support her decision to leave due to touring commitments overseas. We very much hope that Jessie will remain part of the show and come back and perform for us next series. In the meantime we will now start the search for a new coach.”

HBO Reveals Details on a Prop 8 Documentary

HBO LogoFollowing the Supreme Court’s ruling on Proposition 8 – California’s ban on same-sex marriages – HBO Documentary Films announced the details of directors Ben Cotner and Ryan White’s inside look at the case at the heart of the Supreme Court’s decision. Cotner and White have been working on the project for five years and had “exclusive access” to legal team Ted Olson and David Boies as well as the four plaintiffs – Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, and Jeffrey Zarrillo and Paul Katami.

HBO is planning on airing the documentary in 2014. Announcing the film, HBO Programming President Michael Lombardo said, “The story of the battle to overturn Prop 8 is the story of a modern-day American revolution. HBO is proud to present what is intended to be the film of record on this landmark case.”

The documentary explores the people at the center of the historic case. “I’ve always said that the best evidence in this case is to hear our clients tell their stories,” said Ted Olsen. “Paul, Jeff, Kris and Sandy have been brave enough to share their lives with the courts and now with the world. As Ben and Ryan tell this incredible story – that for me was the most important case I’ve ever worked on – people will inevitably be moved by getting to know these amazing individuals.”

Adds David Boies: “The evidence at trial, including from the defendants’ own witnesses on cross-examination, proved that discriminating against LGBT couples seriously harmed them and their children, without any benefit to anyone. The opponents of marriage equality have successfully blocked the release of the videotapes of that testimony. But they cannot block this documentary. Everyone who sees this film will understand the pain our fellow citizens feel when they are deprived of the right to marry the person they love – and why that pain is so unnecessary.”

“Watching this case unfold has been a master class in the judicial system and in the ongoing movement towards realizing equality in this country,” stated director Ryan White. “We are excited to share that experience with the world.”
