‘I May Destroy You’s Michaela Coel Sets Up ‘First Day on Earth’

First Day on Earth from writer, executive producer, and actor Michaela Coel (I May Destroy You) will be co-produced by HBO and BBC. Coel’s new drama will have a 10-episode first season, with production expected to begin in 2025.

“I am delighted to be working with VAL, HBO and the BBC again, and to partner with A24; thanks to all of their combined taste, care, and expertise, I feel our show is in great hands,” said Coel. “First Day on Earth is another very personal story for me which I hope will engage viewers from all over the world, and I can’t wait for audiences to go on Henri’s journey with her.”

Who is Henri? HBO offered this synopsis:

“British novelist Henri is stuck. Work has dried up, her relationship is going nowhere. So when she’s offered a job on a film in Ghana, West Africa – her parents’ homeland, where her estranged father lives – she can’t resist the chance to reconnect with him and the country of her heritage.

But when she arrives, neither the job nor her father turn out the way she expected, and soon Henri has to deal with danger and hypocrisy, form new friendships, lose her illusions, and create a new sense of identity – one that might leave her stronger, but could also break her.”

Additional executive producers include BBC’s Jo McClellan, A24’s Piers Wenger, and Jesse Armstrong, Phil Clarke, and Roberto Troni for Various Artists Limited.

“Michaela’s words have the ability to transport the reader like no other. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue the conversation that began with I May Destroy You, alongside our close collaborators at VAL, A24, and the BBC. With Henri as our guide, First Day on Earth is as lyrical as it is visceral in its excavation of the idea of home,” stated Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President, HBO & Max Comedy Programming.

Executive producers Phil Clarke and Robert Troni released this statement: “We’re delighted and feel extremely lucky that Michaela chose to bring her brilliant new show to us, after the extraordinary experience we had working together on I May Destroy You. Yet again, Michaela delivers a highly original, singular story that explores the relationship between England and Ghana via a second-generation British-Ghanaian woman who takes up the opportunity to return to the homeland of her parents and finds herself encountering a cast of memorable characters and experiences that force her to face some painful home truths. But as ever with Michaela, it is by turns shocking, funny, and unforgettable, and done in her inimitable style.”

Despite efforts by fans, the cast, and everyone involved with Evil, we’ve reached the final episode without another network or streamer stepping forward and saving the critically acclaimed series. Season four episode 14, the season/series finale, streams on Thursday, August 22, 2024 on Paramount+.

Series co-creator Robert King posted this message on Twitter (sorry, I’m still refusing to call it X): “The last episode of #Evil this Thursday. Thank you for such wonderful fans. It’s been lovely to see such dedication and creativity for a show that addresses issues of good and evil in an often silly manner. We’ve had the times of our life and will miss this freedom.”

Season four stars Katja Herbers as Kristen Bouchard, Mike Colter as David Acosta, Aasif Mandvi as Ben Shakir, Michael Emerson as Leland Townsend, and Christine Lahti as Sheryl. Andrea Martin stars as Sister Andrea, Kurt Fuller is Dr. Boggs, Brooklyn Shuck is Lynn Bouchard, Skylar Gray is Lila Bouchard, Maddy Crocco is Lexis Bouchard, Patrick Brammall is Andy Bouchard, and Dalya Knapp plays Laura Bouchard.

“Fear of the End” Plot: An ominous countdown begins after the Bouchard girls start a new game on their VR goggles. The Entity moves to stop the Sixty, despite Sister Andrea’s warnings. The team receives an offer they never expected. Kristen faces a final threat as Leland takes matters into his own hands.

In the new season of Evil, Kristen, David, and Ben continue to assess cases that involve wayward technology, possessed pigs, demonic oppression and infestation, a dance muse conjured by alleged witches and an evil relic. Throughout, Leland attempts to lure Kristen into raising a baby antichrist who was conceived with her ovum. David is recruited by the Vatican’s secret service to “remote view” a paranormal ability to see the unseen in order to detect evil. Ben is hit by an ion beam, causing him to see visions of a taunting jinn until he discovers an unusual solution to banish it.

Finally, all three realize they only have a few weeks left to assess cases because the parish has decided to disband the team due to a lack of funds. This culminates in one last confrontation with Leland and the 60 families that make up Evil in the modern world.

Kevin Costner’s Western drama Horizon: An American Saga has set an August 23, 2024 streaming premiere date on Max. The R-rated action film debuted on Premium VOD on July 16th.

Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many,” reads the official synopsis. “Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends, and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.”

In addition to Kevin Costner, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, and Giovanni Ribisi star. The cast also includes Abbey Lee, Will Patton, Jena Malone, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, and Jeff Fahey. Additionally, Isabelle Fuhrman, Ella Hunt, David O’Hara, Owen Crow Shoe, Tatanka Means, and Tim Guinee slip back into the Wild West. Scott Haze, Tom Payne, Alejandro Edda, James Russo, Jon Beavers, Jaime Campbell Bower, and Michael Anganaro round out the ensemble.

Chapter One of Costner’s self-financed epic opened in theaters on June 24th, and Chapter Two was originally set to follow on August 16th. Unfortunately, after a disastrous box office run, Chapter Two was pulled off Warner Bros’ summer release schedule. A new theatrical release date hasn’t been announced.

Costner’s original plan was to make a four-part Western epic, but his latest excursion into the Western genre only generated an $11 million opening weekend. It went on to gross an estimated $29 million domestically over its theatrical run, and worldwide, its total gross is just $34 million.

Costner and Jon Baird co-wrote the screenplay. Producers include Costner, Howard Kaplan, and Mark Gillard. Danny Peykoff, Robert Scannell, Armyan Bernstein, Charlie Lyons, Barry Berg, and Rod Lake executive produce.
