The World’s End Plot:

The tale of The World’s End begins on June 22nd, 1990. In their suburban U.K. town of Newton Haven, five boys in the prime of their teenage youth celebrate the end of school by attempting an epic pub crawl together. Despite their enthusiasm and the downing of a slew of pints of beer, they fall short of seeing their quest through, to the last pub on their list, The World’s End. Twenty-odd years later, “the five musketeers” have each left their hometown and are now husbands, fathers, men with careers – with the flashing-red-light exception of Gary King (Simon Pegg), who is now a 40-year-old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens.

The irrepressible Gary, keenly aware of his estrangement from his onetime closest friend Andy (Nick Frost), becomes hellbent on trying “The Golden Mile” drinking marathon again. He convinces Andy, Steven (Paddy Considine), Oliver (Martin Freeman), and Peter (Eddie Marsan) to stage an encore, and one Friday afternoon they are all reunited. Gary is in his element: the mandate is one night, five guys, twelve pubs – imbibing at least one pint apiece at each establishment. Arriving in Newton Haven, they re-encounter Oliver’s sister Sam (Rosamund Pike), for whom Gary and Steven each still carry a torch. As the gang attempts along the way to reconcile their past and present, an increasingly insane and dangerous series of encounters with old haunts and acquaintances makes them realize that the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries…

The World’s End opens in theaters on August 23, 2013.

Check Out the ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2’ New Trailer

Favorite line from the trailer: “There’s a leek in the boat!” Yeah, it’s kind of one of those things you have to actually see/hear to get, isn’t it?

The new trailer for Sony Pictures Animation’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 is full of bizarre food creatures including dinosaurs that look like celery and chimpanzees made of shrimps. Coming to theaters on September 27, 2013, the sequel features Bill Hader as Flint Lockwood, Anna Faris as Sam Sparks, James Caan as Tim Lockwood, Will Forte as Chester V, Kristen Schaal as Barb, Terry Crews as Earl, Andy Samberg as Brent, Neil Patrick Harris as Steve, and Benjamin Bratt as Manny.

The Plot: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 picks up where Sony Pictures Animation’s hit comedy left off. Inventor Flint Lockwood’s genius is finally being recognized as he’s invited by his idol Chester V to join The Live Corp Company, where the best and brightest inventors in the world create technologies for the betterment of mankind. Chester’s right-hand-gal – and one of his greatest inventions – is Barb (a highly evolved orangutan with a human brain, who is also devious, manipulative and likes to wear lipstick.

It’s always been Flint’s dream to be recognized as a great inventor, but everything changes when he discovers that his most infamous machine (which turns water into food) is still operating and is now creating food-animal hybrids – “foodimals!” With the fate of humanity in his hands, Chester sends Flint and his friends on a dangerously delicious mission, battling hungry tacodiles, shrimpanzees, apple pie-thons, double bacon cheespiders and other food creatures to save the world again!

Pacific Rim Video: “Kaiju Remedies”

“Just because the apocalypse is here doesn’t mean you can’t look and feel your best.”

Ron Perlman is featured in this new video from Guillermo del Toro’s robots versus monsters movie, Pacific Rim. In character as ‘Hannibal Chau’, Perlman is Pacific Rim‘s version of a snake oil salesman, although this time it’s monster remains he’s selling to cure whatever ails you.

Pacific Rim is rated PG-13 and opens in theaters on July 12, 2013.

The Plot:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

‘Despicable Me 2’ Review – More Minions in a Decent Sequel

To no great surprise, another animated movie has spawned a sequel. Despicable Me 2 picks up shortly after the first one left off; with a villain named Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) now turned into a lovable softy by the precocious threesome of orphan girls he adopted originally for their unwitting help in proving what a spectacular bad guy he could be.

Now settled into the world of making jams and jellies, our formerly evil hero finds the life of an initially reluctant father to his liking. To kick-start this plot along, an organization known as the Anti-Villain League recruits him to help stop someone from carrying out a dastardly deed of their own. This brings a new woman (voiced by Kristen Wiig) into Gru’s life. The girls also have different subplots going on, as does Gru’s right-hand man, Dr. Nefario (Russell Brand). But all of these different stories are where the film tries to do too much.

What should be a simple, fun tale of Gru and his still hilarious and adorable minions taking down a supervillain gets caught up among so many other storylines. This makes the middle section dragged a bit, creating some pacing issues. Cutting out Wiig’s character entirely would have made for a much leaner, tighter script, but why not include a comedienne who brings all that quirky energy and of whom America simply can’t get enough of? (Yes, that’s sarcasm you smell.)

Moving along, for the most part Despicable Me 2 delivers a decent sequel. I’m still not convinced this was a movie that needed to be made, but it delivered a good dose of laughs and a few tender moments. (And to be fair, I can’t seem to ever get enough of the minions).

If there’s one point I want to harp on for a quick second, it’s the 3D. By and large, it’s okay. However, the end-credit sequence of minions mucking about utilizes some of the very best 3D I’ve seen to date. This is both a blessing and a curse though, as it shows just how well the filmmakers can employ this technology. If that’s the case, why only use it for this one section? All you’re doing is showing how flat and not-3D the entire feature film was. Frankly, it’s offensive to think you can justify the higher costs because you include one tiny skit that makes those tinted glasses truly useful. Either go all the way all the time, or let us enjoy the movie sans re-sanitized spectacles and spend those few extra bucks on popcorn and candy.

Sadly, with Monsters University unjustifiably sucking all the cash out of parents’ wallets, I hope the box office for this movie isn’t affected too much. Whereas Pixar relied on tradition to fool people into a largely terrible follow-up to one of their own properties, Despicable Me 2 will just have to rely on being a good animated film to draw audiences in. And judging by the number of people who went to see The Heat last weekend, I’m worried whether being a good film is enough these days.

GRADE: C+

Despicable Me 2 opens in theaters on July 3, 2013 and is rated PG for rude humor and mild action.
