Movie Review: ‘The Lone Ranger’

Zzzzzzzzzz. Zzzzzzzzzz. Zzzzzzzzzz. (snort) Huh?!? What?!? Oh, another gunshot/explosion/loud noise due to train crash has erupted from the movie theater speakers because I fell asleep again while attempting to watch director Gore Verbinski’s adaptation of The Lone Ranger. (For all you youngin’s our there, this was a TV series and even a radio serial well before many of you were born.)

Starring Armie Hammer as a bumbling version of the titular hero and Johnny Depp as Tonto, an offensive stereotype of Comanche Indians (I brought a friend made aware of her tribe’s customs by her full-blooded Native American grandmother to verify that aspect), the film lumbers along for two and a half hours for no good reason in particular. And if you thought that bringing the director and star of The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise back together would create the same surprisingly decent result (at least for the first of those films), put that thought away.

The relationship between our “heroes” is poorly scripted and executed, making this a pathetic excuse for a buddy movie. The action is tedious, making this a pathetic excuse for an action-adventure film; and of the multiple occasions I “rested my eyes” during the monotony, one or two of these instances even occurred during an overly long sequence involving ridiculous shenanigans on trains. The story is overly complicated and too many characters are developed to the point of needing more development but getting no such treatment from the script, making this a pathetic excuse for a movie worth your time and/or money.

Also, for all you Tim Burton fans. Have no fear. Although this isn’t made by him, Helena Bonham Carter is needlessly in this movie to make sure Johnny Depp isn’t far from either of them on a film set.

I’m not going to belabor this review. The Lone Ranger is awful. Not okay. Not sort of bad. It’s awful. It chugs along slowly for far too long, given its plot. It tries to double the very recognizable Monument Valley in Utah for some part of Texas (just one of many examples of avoiding reality). And the only interesting characters (played well by William Fichtner and James Badge Dale) are either killed early on or not given enough attention because the film is too busy making us watch the “heroes” fumble along and make a mockery of the source material and Native American culture.

If you have a worst enemy, tell them to go see this. Otherwise, just mosey along. Resurrecting this property as anything other than a credible Western taken seriously by the filmmakers, with a proper screenplay and a star more interested in creating credible cinema than continuing their never-ending attempt to cram a version of Capt. Jack Sparrow into almost every part they’ve played in the last decade, was a bad idea in the first place. Having it end up like this is simply crap.

GRADE: D-

The Lone Ranger opens in theaters on July 3, 2013 and is rated PG-13 for sequences of intense action and violence, and some suggestive material.

Movie Review: ‘Despicable Me 2’

A scene from Despicable Me 2 with Steve Carell
Gru (STEVE CARELL) has a big talk with Margo (MIRANDA COSGROVE), Agnes (ELSIE FISHER) and Edith (DANA GAIER) in ‘Despicable Me 2’ (Photo © 2013 Universal Studios)

“A new villain has surfaced. You know how a villain thinks that’s why we brought you here,” says Silas (Steve Coogan), head of the Anti-Villains League, to Gru (Steve Carell) in hopes of convincing the once evil mastermind to work with them in discovering the identity of a new powerful criminal in the movie sequel Despicable Me 2.

Gru – who was once considered the greatest villain of all time – has given up all his evil ways and become a full-time father to Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Agnes (Elsie Kate Fisher), and Edith (Dana Gaier) as well as develop a new jam and jelly enterprise with his old friend Dr. Nefario (Russell Brand). Gru has just finished cleaning up after a successful birthday party for Agnes when Agent Lucy (Kristen Wiig) kidnaps him and takes Gru, along with two stowaway minions, to the Anti-Villains League headquarters to convince him to help them learn the identity of a new master criminal who has stolen a special highly dangerous serum.

At first, Gru wants nothing to do with the plan of going undercover posing as a baker in the mall where the League is convinced the new evil mastermind is hiding in plain sight as a mall shop owner. But after seeing a few of their new gadgets and seeing his three girls’ eyes light up when he tells them about the League wanting his help, Gru decides to become a spy for the League.

Cute, funny, and charming, Despicable Me 2 is full of laughs and has even more minions. However, it’s missing the heart and emotion of the first film. Steve Carell is perfect once again as the voice of ex-master villain Gru who now prides himself in being a loving and, at times, overprotective dad. Miranda Cosgrove, Elsie Kate Fisher, and Dana Gaier all return as the voices of Margo, Agnes and Edith, but unfortunately, their sweet characters and storylines take a back seat to the partnership of Gru and Agent Lucy, voiced effectively and occasionally annoyingly by Kristen Wiig.

The sub-plot of Agnes longing for a mother and hoping Gru and Lucy hit it off feels forced and falls flat. Wiig’s character is neither endearing nor entertaining, and at times during the movie, is just plain dumb and irritating. It’s a shame her character makes up as much of the film as she does.

The best element of Despicable Me 2 is the ever-popular humorous little yellow minions who provide most of the fun and the biggest laughs in the movie. They have more than double the screen time this time out, which means double the laughs – and they are the key to the new evil mastermind’s dastardly plot to cause chaos in the world.

The animation looks just as good as the first film, and the use of 3D is extremely impressive in the first few minutes of the film and again during the credits. Sadly, the great use of 3D disappears during most of the rest of the film.

Sweet and entertaining, Despicable Me 2 is a fun, worthy sequel to the original film and is sure to entertain the entire family.

GRADE: C+

Despicable Me 2 opens in theaters on July 3, 2013 and is rated PG for rude humor and mild action.

Details on Pacific Rim:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are synched via a neural bridge, called “The Drift.” But as the enemy grows more powerful with each attack, even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.

On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes — a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) — who are teamed to drive a seemingly obsolete Jaeger. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I know nothing about cars. Nothing. However, you don’t have to be a car nut to know the new Bumblebee in Transformers 4 is just gorgeous. Paramount Pictures has just released these two photos of the 2014 Concept Camaro that will be seen in the upcoming fourth film of the big-budget robot franchise from director Michael Bay, and the vehicle is stunning. Is that an okay term to use to describe a car?

The alien invasion thriller Falling Skies will return for a fourth season on TNT. The network just announced that the series has been picked up for a 10-episode fourth season which will air next summer.

Currently airing season three, Falling Skies is executive produced by Steven Spielberg and stars Noah Wyle, Drew Roy, Moon Bloodgood, Will Patton, Connor Jessup, Seychelle Gabriel, Colin Cunningham, and Sarah Carter. Season three has been averaging 5.8 million viewers and is basic cable’s #1 scripted summer series with adults 18-49 and 25-54.

Season 3 Plot: As the new season of Falling Skies opens, seven months have passed since the survivors of the 2nd Mass reached Charleston, which has been named the capital of the New United States. Now elected to public office, Tom (Wyle) has taken a more aggressive approach to the alien occupation than former leader Dr. Manchester.

The government has formed a tenuous alliance with a band of rebel skitters who now paint their faces with a red and yellow stripe before battle in honor of Red Eye, their fallen leader. Tom’s son Ben (Jessup) serves as the mediator between Mason and the rebel skitters. But the alliance may not be enough to overpower the enemy Espheni, whose forces are now being led by an even more sinister overlord. To complicate matters further, another race of aliens has just entered the battlefield.

Charleston also faces dangers from within its own walls. Recent battle losses have convinced Tom and the military that there may be a mole feeding strategic plans to the Espheni. Despite the threats they face, the survivors living in Charleston are doing their best to rebuild their lives. Dr. Glass (Bloodgood) and Tom are focusing on their growing family. Newly promoted to Colonel of the 2nd Mass, Weaver (Patton) is enjoying a renewed relationship with his daughter. Hal (Roy) is recovering from mysterious injuries he suffered while trying to destroy an alien superweapon.

Meanwhile, his romantic pursuit of Maggie (Carter) is finally starting to see positive results, though she has a growing concern that something is wrong with him beyond mere battle injuries. And Pope (Cunningham), the non-conformist leader of the Berserkers, has set up his own little Popetown on the outskirts of Charleston.
