‘The To Do List’ Offers a ’90s Soundtrack

The To Do List Poster

The To Do List, based on the real-life experiences of writer/director Maggie Carey, is heading to theaters on July 26, 2013 but the soundtrack album will be available a few days earlier. The soundtrack features songs by ’90s artists including MC Hammer, 2 Live Crew, Salt N’ Pepa, Naughty by Nature, Tears for Fears, 2 Live Crew, and Gin Blossoms, with many of the tracks picking up on the film’s sexual storyline.

“Music was crucial for setting the time period and comedic tone in The To Do List. I wanted the soundtrack to feel like a mix-tape my friends and I would make back in high school. The one you played so much it mucked up your car stereo and you’d find yourself winding it back up with a pencil,” said first-time writer/director Maggie Carey. “A lot of the songs were chosen because they take me back to a very specific place in time. I camped out overnight for MC Hammer tickets, Bittersweet was my first foray into ‘college radio’ music, I memorized the lyrics to O.P.P. before realizing what they were actually talking about. For those of us who know ‘90s music first hand, it’s a throw back. And for the kids just discovering it, well, everyone needs a little Salt N Pepa and 2 Live Crew on their iPod.”

The R-rated comedy stars Aubrey Plaza, Rachel Bilson, Connie Britton, Donald Glover, Andy Samberg, and Bill Hader. The ensemble also includes Johnny Simmons, Alia Shawkat, Sarah Steele, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Scott Porter, and Clark Gregg.

The To Do List Soundtrack Track List:

Me So Horny – 2 Live Crew (clean version)
O.P.P. – Naughty By Nature
Let’s Talk About Sex – Salt N Pepa
Fade Into You – Mazzy Star
I Don’t Know Why I Love You – House of Love
Stutter – Elastica
29 – Gin Blossoms
Dreams – Cranberries
Laid – James
Bittersweet – Big Head Todd and the Monsters
Break it Down Again – Tears for Fears
U Can’t Touch This – MC Hammer

The Plot:

Set in 1993, valedictorian Brandy Klark wants to shed her uptight image before college, so she assembles a to-do list of all the “activities” she missed out on in high school. Quickly realizing that she’s way out of her depth, Brandy solicits her best friends, older sister, and burnt-out boss for their help and advice. If the group is going to complete the list by September, they’ll need plenty of imagination and very open minds.

Music Spotlight: Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop”

Whoa… Miley Cyrus has not only grown-up, she’s gone a bit trashy in this new video for her single “We Can’t Stop.” Any traces of Hannah Montana are completely gone, with her latest music video featuring twerking, some bizarre steam coming out of people’s private areas, and dancing Teddy bears. Actually, the “We Can’t Stop” video is trippy, disjointed, and something you have to see to believe. Fans of the singer/actress may enjoy it but those who aren’t into Miley will probably enjoy it even more. It provides plenty of fuel for the anti-Miley fire.

‘The Voice’ Season 4 Crowns a Champion

The final episode of The Voice season four aired on June 18, 2013, with three acts competing for the grand prize of a Universal Music Group recording contract and bragging rights to the title of ‘The Voice.’ Team Blake was well-represented with two acts in the finale of the singing competition, while newbie coach Usher also had a singer who made it into the final three.

But for coaches Adam Levine and Shakira, the pressure was off, and all they had to do was sit back and enjoy the show.

Before the winner could be crowned, NBC’s The Voice had a lot of singers to put up on the stage. Eliminated competitors joined the final three for various numbers, but it was a couple of big name acts that stole the show. Christina Aguilera, who’ll be back in her Voice coaching chair next season, teamed up with Pitbull for a rousing performance of “Feel This Moment,” and Florida Georgia Line joined Nelly on stage to deliver an amazing performance of “Cruise.”

However, the moment everyone was waiting for didn’t come until near the very end of the season finale. Cher…yes, that Cher…premiered her “Woman’s World” single off of her upcoming album to an enthusiastic crowd, some of whom had probably never heard a single song she’s performed over her 50-year career.

Eventually, after all but the winner’s final song was left to perform, the order of finish for the remaining three acts was announced by Carson Daly. Finishing in third from Blake Shelton’s team were the Swon Brothers, the first duo to make it this far in the competition over four seasons. And Usher had to settle for a second-place finish in his rookie year of coaching, with the popular Michelle Chamuel losing out to Country singer Danielle Bradbery. 16-year-old Danielle was coached by Blake and says her musical influences are Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride, and American Idol‘s Carrie Underwood.

Season five of The Voice will air this fall with Christina Aguilera and CeeLo Green reuniting with Blake Shelton and Adam Levine to form the judging/coaching panel.

James Gandolfini Passes Away at 51

James Gandolfini, best known for playing mob boss Tony Soprano on the hit HBO series The Sopranos, has died of a massive heart attack. Gandolfini was reportedly on vacation in Italy when he suffered the heart attack.

Gandolfini was most recently seen on the big screen in the critically acclaimed movie Zero Dark Thirty playing the director of the CIA and as the father of a struggling musician in Not Fade Away where he reunited with Sopranos creator David Chase.

Among the many celebrities expressing their thoughts about the passing of James Gandolfini was Damon Lindelof, who perhaps expressed best what his many fans are thinking:

“James Gandolfini. You created an icon. And you cut to black way too abruptly. Thank you, and rest in peace.” @DamonLindelof

Gandolfini kept out of the media spotlight, keeping his personal life as private as possible. He married Deborah Lin in 2008, and the couple had a baby girl last October. He’s also survived by a son with his ex-wife, Marcy Wudarski. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very difficult time.

* * * *
Edited to add:

“He was a genius. Anyone who saw him even in the smallest of his performances knows that,” stated The Sopranos‘ David Chase. “He is one of the greatest actors of this or any time. A great deal of that genius resided in those sad eyes. I remember telling him many times, ‘You don’t get it. You’re like Mozart.’ There would be silence at the other end of the phone. For Deborah and Michael and Liliana this is crushing. And it’s bad for the rest of the world. He wasn’t easy sometimes. But he was my partner, he was my brother in ways I can’t explain and never will be able to explain.”

Statement by Edie Falco:

“I am shocked and devastated by Jim’s passing. He was a man of tremendous depth and sensitivity, with a kindness and generosity beyond words. I consider myself very lucky to have spent 10 years as his close colleague. My heart goes out to his family. As those of us in his pretend one hold on to the memories of our intense and beautiful time together. The love between Tony and Carmela was one of the greatest I’ve ever known.”

Netflix Renews ‘Hemlock Grove’

Hemlock Grove Poster

Hemlock Grove will be returning for a second season as just announced by Netflix. The gothic thriller was developed by Brian McGreevy (also the author of the novel it’s based on) and Lee Shipman. Season one was executive produced by Eli Roth, with Charles H Eglee (The Walking Dead, Dexter) joining season two as executive producer/showrunner.

Netflix says production on season two will begin later this year, and 10 new episodes will air in 2014.

“The worldwide fan response to Hemlock Grove was phenomenal,” said executive producer Eli Roth. “Netflix members loved the potent combination of sexy monsters, mystery, and the dark family soap opera that ended with a huge twist, leaving audiences worldwide totally shocked. Season One was just a warm-up for what we have in store for season two. Get ready to be scared in ways you never expected.”

“In its first season, Eli, Brian, Lee, and the team did an incredible job of introducing viewers to a unique world of memorable characters,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix. “Chic’s addition to the show, and his experience on such fan favorites as The Shield, The Walking Dead and Dexter, will heighten the intensity of the mystery that grips Hemlock Grove.”

Season one starred Famke Janssen, Bill Skarsgård, Landon Liboiron, Freya Tingley, and Dougray Scott.

The Plot:

Hemlock Grove is a gothic horror thriller that explores the strange happenings in a small Pennsylvania town. The show focuses on the unlikely friendship between the founding family’s young heir, Roman Godfrey, and the relative newcomer and outsider, Peter Rumancek. Each holds a monstrous secret that has been unleashed.

Is John Mayer’s “Paper Doll” a Response to Taylor Swift’s “Dear John”?

With lyrics such as “Someone’s gonna paint you another sky” and “You’re like 22 girls in one, and none of them know what they’re running from,” it’s not pushing things to assume John Mayer’s “Paper Doll” is his response to Taylor Swift’s “Dear John.” That song – one of the many break-up tunes penned by Swift – included the line “You paint me a blue sky and go back and turn it to rain,” and Mayer’s “Paper Doll” seems to be his lyrical swipe at Swift’s take on their old relationship.

Mayer and Swift dated back in 2009, and Swift’s 2010 “Dear John” – released after they broke up – was a pointed declaration of how Swift felt Mayer treated her during their brief romance.

Mayer’s just released a “Paper Doll” lyric video featuring the queen of Prancerise, Joanna Rohrback. How her involvement in the video relates to the Mayer/Swift lyrical battle is unknown, but she’s fun to watch nonetheless. However…the song itself isn’t one of Mayer’s finer offerings.

Shailene Woodley Cut from ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’

Interesting… The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has lost one character after actress Shailene Woodley’s scenes were filmed. Why? Well director Marc Webb says it was a “creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship.” Director Webb also said, “Shailene is an incredibly talented actress, and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her.”

So, Mary Jane won’t appear in this second Amazing movie, but the character will be a part of the third film of the series. However, whether it’ll be played by Shailene Woodley hasn’t been confirmed. Woodley’s been busy working on Divergent [pictured] and if that film’s a box office success, she could be working on the sequels at the same time Amazing Spider-Man 3 goes into production.

The Amazing Spider-Man 3 will be opening in theaters on June 10, 2016 followed by Amazing Spider-Man 4 on May 4, 2018.
