The phrase “Trust the Process” is another way of saying stick to the plan even when the plan seems to not be working. In the theater, it can be used to instill confidence in performers who may be having trouble, basically telling them to keep going and avoid distractions. And distractions are never more present than in a prison. So, the characters in Sing Sing really put their faith in Trusting the Process.
Sing Sing is about a Rehabilitation Through the Arts theater group in Sing Sing prison. The troupe is unofficially run by an incarcerated man/playwright named Divine G (Rustin’s Colman Domingo) with the help of an outside writer/director named Brent (Paul Raci from Sound of Metal). Tired of the usual tragedies they’ve been doing, the group decides to try their hand at comedy, and throws every idea from time travel to Freddy Krueger at Brent, who unbelievably comes up with a script for them.
The dynamic of the group is shifted when a new incarcerated man named Divine Eye (Clarence Maclin, playing himself) joins in. Divine Eye’s stubbornness irritates the rest of the men, but soon enough, he realizes what everyone else already knows: that the theater group is much more than just a way to kill time in the pen.
The story behind Sing Sing is real. It was based on a series of magazine articles by John H. Richardson called “The Sing Sing Follies” that were originally published in Esquire, and it is about the real Divine G (real name John Whitfield) and the real Divine Eye (Clarence Maclin).
The play produced by the incarcerated men in the movie is also real. It was based on Breakin’ the Mummy’s Code by the real Brent Buell, which was actually produced at Sing Sing in 2005 (and is just as crazy as the movie version, with a Pharoah meeting everyone from Robin Hood to Hamlet – and yes, Freddy Krueger, too).
Even the incarcerated men that make up the cast in Sing Sing are real. With the exception of Domingo and Raci, all of the main cast are RTA program alumni.
While Sing Sing is not your typical prison movie, writer/director Greg Kwedar and his co-writer Clint Bentley have crafted an extremely authentic and surprisingly genuine presentation of the correctional system. The participants in the RTA group are looking for something – anything – to hold on to that will keep them sane in the most insane of conditions. And they’ll do what they have to do in order to keep the program going, knowing that losing it means going back to the monotony of their daily lives.
Within the story of Sing Sing, “trust the process” takes on another, more sinister meaning. The men are constantly facing appeal inquiries, parole boards, and clemency hearings, so it’s quite a different process than the one that they trust in the RTA program. It’s a process that they are forced to trust without having any real faith in it – Divine G actually has evidence that exonerates him, but he has to jump through massive hoops to prove his innocence. It’s much easier to trust the theater process.
Speaking of Divine G, Colman Domingo’s portrayal of the sensitive incarcerated man is nothing short of amazing. Domingo pours his heart and soul into his performance, and his character’s arc goes from calm and steady to frustrated and panicked as the stress of both the theater performance and life in prison gets to him. Domingo leaves it all on screen, giving the year’s first Oscar-caliber performance.
Sing Sing manages to be both uplifting and unsettling at the same time. It’s a movie about making the best out of a bad situation, working together towards a common goal, and recognizing the redemptive power of the arts. It’s a subtly powerful movie.
The release of Sing Sing signals the arrival of the Academy Awards season, and Colman Domingo easily deserves at least a nomination. Whether or not he gets one remains to be seen. We’ll just have to Trust the Process.

Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman hit the road, again, for season two of Apple TV+’s Long Way Up. The streamer announced the Emmy nominated series is returning for a 10-episode season that will find the buddies traveling from Scotland to England while taking a circuitous route.
“On a rather tricky, sandy bit of Long Way Up, Charley and I started to daydream about another trip to keep our minds off the scary road at hand! This is that trip. Rusty old bikes and 10,000 miles of Scandinavia, and Eastern and Central Europe. A big loop from my house in Scotland to Charley’s house in England. Long way home…magic,” stated executive producer and star Ewan McGregor.
Long Way Up premiered on September 18, 2020. Apple TV+ hasn’t announced when season two will launch.
“It has been such a pleasure to get back on the road on motorcycles with my best friend Ewan. We’ve talked about doing this trip on old bikes since the last one. Traveling around Scandinavia and Europe has been a blast on our beautiful bikes,” added executive producer and star Charley Boorman.
Season one earned Emmy nominations in the Outstanding Travel, Adventure and Nature Program; Outstanding Sound Mixing and Editing; and, Outstanding Multiple Camera Editing categories. It currently stands at 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Apple TV+ offered this description of season two:
“The new season follows Ewan and Charley as they ride vintage, lovingly refurbished motorbikes from Ewan’s home in Scotland to Charley’s in England, but rather than take the shortest route, they go the long way! They head across the North Sea to Scandinavia, all the way up to the Arctic Circle and then down to the Baltics, through continental Europe, before eventually hopping back over the English Channel two months later.
It’s an adventure that will take them to more than fifteen countries, through spectacular scenery and along some of the greatest driving roads in the world. Along the way they’ll immerse themselves in each country’s culture, meet the locals, and try their hand at unique and eclectic activities.”
David Alexanian and Russ Malkin executive produce and direct season two.
FX is launching Ryan Murphy’s horror drama Grotesquerie on September 25, 2024. The new 10-episode season will air on FX on Wednesdays at 10pm ET/PT, and will stream on Hulu on Thursdays.
“In FX’s Grotesquerie, a series of heinous crimes have unsettled a small community. Detective Lois Tryon feels these crimes are eerily personal, as if someone—or something—is taunting her. At home, Lois grapples with a strained relationship with her daughter, a husband in long-term hospital care and her own inner demons. With no leads and unsure of where to turn, she accepts the help of Sister Megan, a nun and journalist with the Catholic Guardian. Sister Megan, with her own difficult past, has seen the worst of humanity, yet she still believes in its capacity for good,” reads FX’s synopsis. “Lois, on the other hand, fears the world is succumbing to evil. As Lois and Sister Megan string together clues, they find themselves ensnared in a sinister web that only seems to raise more questions than answers.”
Niecy Nash-Betts, Emmy winner for her performance in Murphy’s Monster, stars as Detective Lois Tryon. Two-time Emmy winner Courtney B. Vance plays Marshall Tryon and Oscar nominee Lesley Manville is Nurse Redd. The horror series also stars Tony Award nominee Micaela Diamond as Sister Megan, Nicholas Alexander Chavez as Father Charlie, and Raven Goodwin as Merritt Tryon.

Here’s the deal. If you watch the new Slow Horsesseason four trailer and are already a fan of the series, it’ll make you impatient for September 4, 2024. If you haven’t checked out the series, the trailer will convince you to immediately binge the first three seasons on Apple TV+. It’s that effective.

New episodes of the six-episode season stream on Wednesdays beginning September 4th. The season four finale is set for October 9th.
James McAvoy describes his character in Speak No Evil as all about playing games…twisted games, of course. McAvoy, who’s happy to be back with Blumhouse, says his character has a darkness to him. However, “the minute he gets toxic, he balances it with something to justify it,” explains the BAFTA winner in the new one-minute featurette from the psychological thriller.
“When an American family is invited to spend the weekend at the idyllic country estate of a charming British family they befriended on vacation, what begins as a dream holiday soon warps into a snarled psychological nightmare,” reads Blumhouse’s synopsis.
James McAvoy (Split) stars as Paddy, a husband, father, and charismatic, alpha-male estate owner. Mackenzie Davis (Terminator: Dark Fate) and SAG award-winner Scoot McNairy (A Quiet Place Part II) star as the vacationing couple who make a life-altering decision when they befriend Paddy and his family. Alix West Lefler plays their 11-year-old daughter. Aisling Franciosi (Game of Thrones) is Paddy’s wife, Ciara, and Dan Hough plays their mute son.
James Watkins (The Woman in Black) wrote and directed Speak No Evil, based on writers Christian Tafdrup and Mads Tafdrup’s 2022 Danish film Gæsterne. Paul Ritchie and Blumhouse’s Jason Blum serve as producers, with Jacob Jarek, Christian Tafdrup, and Blumhouse’s Beatriz Sequeira executive producing.
Speak No Evil opens in theaters on September 13, 2024.

Technically, fall 2024 begins on September 22nd and ends on December 21st. However, for the purposes of this Most Anticipated Fall 2024 Movies list, we’re expanding it a little to include Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’s release on September 6th and Transformers One and His Three Daughters’ launch in theaters on September 20th.
We’re also fudging it by including Nosferatu with Lily-Rose Depp and A Complete Unknown starring Timothée Chalamet, both entering theaters on Christmas Day.
Although the summer box office took a while to heat up – thanks to a slew of underperformers – theaters began to fill up with the releases of Bad Boys: Ride or Die and Inside Out 2. Despicable Me 4 helped it along, but it was Deadpool & Wolverine that confirmed audiences are back. The rise in COVID-19 cases could still impact the final months of 2024, but there’s reason to hope the year will end on a high note.
And speaking of high notes, the following list includes the most buzzed-about new films heading to theaters or streaming as 2024 wraps up.

Modern Family‘s Julie Bowen returns to television with Peacock’s Hysteria!, set during the ’80s “Satanic Panic” era. The short teaser shows Bowen bopping out in her kitchen when suddenly the house shakes. A dish shatters and the face of a demon appears in her microwave. Creepy, right?

“‘What are those kids up to? Whatever it is, it can’t be good.’ That fear haunts every generation. Children of the Atomic Age went on to terrifying their families by turning on, tuning in, and dropping out in the sixties. Those same free spirits went on to vote for Reagan and called for censorship of the obscene and satanic heavy metal bands their own kids worshiped. Now, those kids are adults who rail against pronouns, TikTok, and a movie about Barbie. The cycle doesn’t end. And it’s hard to escape the feeling that someone, or something, is sitting by watching it all, and laughing,” said Kane and Goodman in a statement.
“Hysteria! is about both sides of that generational fear. It’s about the thrills of being young, rebellious in spirit and aspirational at heart – and the horrors of growing up and realizing that the world you thought you knew has shifted beneath your feet. Our hope is that parents and children (of the appropriate age, of course) can enjoy the chills, the laughs, the music, and the heart of Hysteria! together. Growing up is scary. So is parenting.”
