After debuting the trailer to enthusiastic support at the 2013 CinemaCon (the annual gathering of motion picture theatre industry professionals), Universal Pictures has now made the R.I.P.D. trailer available for the rest of the world to check out. In the action-comedy, Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds partner up as dead police officers working to protect the living from souls gone bad.

Directed by Robert Schwentke (Red), R.I.P.D. hits theaters on July 19, 2013.

The Plot:

Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds headline the 3D supernatural action-adventure R.I.P.D. as two cops dispatched by the otherworldly Rest In Peace Department to protect and serve the living from an increasingly destructive array of souls who refuse to move peacefully to the other side.

Veteran sheriff Roy Pulsifer (Bridges) has spent his career with the legendary police force known as R.I.P.D. tracking monstrous spirits who are cleverly disguised as ordinary people. His mission? To arrest and bring to justice a special brand of criminals trying to escape final judgment by hiding among the unsuspecting on Earth.

Once the wise-cracking Roy is assigned former rising-star detective Nick Walker (Reynolds) as his junior officer, the new partners have to turn grudging respect into top-notch teamwork. When they uncover a plot that could end life as we know it, two of R.I.P.D.’s finest must miraculously restore the cosmic balance…or watch the tunnel to the afterlife begin sending angry souls the very wrong way.

Sony Picks Up the Russian Film Stalingrad

Stalingrad PosterStalingrad is set to become the first Russian-produced movie to be released in IMAX 3D as just announced today by Sony Pictures Releasing International. The romantic drama was shot on location in Russia and was directed by Fedor Bondarchuk.

Sony plans to introduce the film’s trailer during the 2013 CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

“We couldn’t be more proud or excited to be releasing Stalingrad in Russia,” said Rory Bruer, president of Worldwide Distribution for Sony Pictures Releasing. “Fedor Bondarchuk is an extraordinary filmmaker and we look forward to showcasing this film as part of our CinemaCon slate presentation because international acquisitions such as this are an important part of our worldwide distribution strategy.”

“It’s a great pleasure to be working with Sony to bring the dramatic scale of this story to audiences, and we’re thrilled to be the first Russian film ever to be presented at CinemaCon,” said Alexander Rodnyansky. “The Battle of Stalingrad is a wartime event that will never be forgotten. We are setting a passionate romance against this massive siege, which makes it a great story and a great subject for the amazing IMAX format. It’s exciting that we are the first Russian war film to be shot in 3D and to be presented in IMAX 3D.”

The Plot:

The Battle of Stalingrad lasted more than six months through the brutal Russian winter and ended with the German army surrendering on February 2, 1943, turning the tide of WWII. The film, set in 1942, follows a band of Soviet soldiers who take refuge in a house in the German-occupied half of Stalingrad, where they encounter a young Russian woman who has been hiding there. As a romance grows between the woman and one of the soldiers, the Red Army prepares for another devastating Nazi attack. Love, grief, passion and the freedom that only those who face death can experience are balanced against the sweeping devastation of war.

New Artist Spotlight: Carrie Zaruba

Carrie Zaruba
Carrie Zaruba - Photographer: Rae Marshall

What made Carrie Zaruba so tough, so able to express her feelings in song? Maybe it comes from always being the last kid when your class had to line up in alphabetical order? Whatever it was, she is rising into the Country Music sky, bright, fast and impossible to ignore.

Her debut album, Woman on a Mission, announces her arrival with crunchy power guitar, sizzling Country fiddle and lyrics that bounce between heartbreak and fist-pumping pride. Released on Go Time Records, produced by Kent Wells, who also co-wrote all six tracks with Zaruba, it showcases the Baltimore native’s ability to blend these disparate elements in a single song — even a single line — and make it completely believable.

Only part of this stems from the chops she cultivated as a jazz and opera vocal student at Philadelphia’s University of the Arts. She was molded more profoundly by her subsequent move to Nashville, the bar gigs she fronted and the writing skills she developed through working with Wells.

On ballads, Zaruba addresses a theme of hiding her sadness while putting on a brave front. When she assures us that she’ll be OK, in “Little Lies,” you feel the pain behind her bravado as well as the resolution that will in fact get her “out the door and on my way.” And all doubt is gone on the up-tempo rockers; the hip “tick, tick … boom” hook on the bridge in “Time Bomb” makes you want to run – straight to the dance floor.

IN HER OWN WORDS

MUSICAL HERO

“Van Morrison. Astral Weeks is one of the most important and inspiring records of all time. I was lucky enough to see him perform it live. His musicality and writing abilities are legendary and his music has undoubtedly shaped my life.”

SONG YOU’D LOVE TO COVER

“’Run to the Hills,’ by Iron Maiden.”

BOOK ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND

“Currently, The Ballad of Bob Dylan, by Daniel Mark Epstein (Dylan is another musical hero of mine).”

WORD YOU SAY OVER AND OVER AGAIN

“Gnarly. I call everything gnarly.”

FAVORITE MODE OF TRANSPORTATION

“I love riding on trains. They rock me to sleep. And I like writing on a train – the scenery inspires me.”

GREATEST PERFORMANCE TO DATE

“In college, I was the lead in the opera Trouble in Tahiti, by Leonard Bernstein, and sang 10 two-hour performances in five days. It was the most challenging and exhilarating time for me. Before that, I never thought I could be a lead in anything, much less opera. It was incredible!”

FAVORITE FOOD ON THE ROAD

“French fries! Even when they’re not that good, they’re great!”

LUCKY CHARM

“A rosary blessed by Pope John Paul II.”

SOMETHING WE’D NEVER GUESS ABOUT YOU

“I love art and photography. I’m a huge fan of Frida Kahlo and recently discovered Francesca Woodman – and I am obsessed.”
