Animal Planet To Add a Batch of New Shows in 2013-2014

Animal Planet’s ratings are continuing to rise and the network has big plans to increase its schedule of original programming as a result of the increase in viewership. 2012 was a huge year for the network as it entered the Top 20 cable network race, and 2013 is showing no signs of slowing down. Plans are now underway for a bunch of new series to be added to Animal Planet‘s lineup in 2013 or 2014.

Marjorie Kaplan, president and general manager of Animal Planet, says, “We all want to feel wild from time to time. Our surprisingly human characters and the rich stories to be told at the intersection of human and wild strike a nerve and make for big entertainment.”

2013-2014 New Animal Planet Shows:

ALASKA BUSH FAMILY
Deep in Alaska’s wilderness, Billy and Ami Brown, along with their seven children, thrive by living off the grid alongside some of the world’s most dangerous animals while they endure the harsh climate and challenging terrain. In ALASKA BUSH FAMILY, viewers get an inside look at the Browns’ unorthodox way of life and discover how they survive in such a remote and often life-threatening environment but wouldn’t live any other way.

ANIMAL BFFs [working title]
ANIMAL BFFs tells the irresistible stories of odd couples from the animal kingdom. They say opposites attract, and there’s nothing cuter than the moment when friends from different species meet for the first time. Each tale begins with the story of how these creatures met and follows them on a journey that reveals surprising truths about their unusual friendships. Whether these fuzzy pals are taking their first trips across the yard or conspiring to steal food from the kitchen together, ANIMAL BFFs‘ tongue-in-cheek narration brings out the drama, comedy and occasional romantic connections that occur along the way.

CATCH AND RELEASE [working title]
Unprepared and left to fend for yourself, what would you do if you were captured, blindfolded and taken to a remote location? In CATCH AND RELEASE, five of the world’s most elite, thrill-seeking survivalists come together to do just that: playing a “game” that puts their skills to the ultimate test. Each survivalist has a different background: there’s a Green Beret, a former Navy SEAL, two survival-school instructors, and a primitive-skills expert. Each is captured one at a time by the other four, is dropped in one of the world’s harshest environments and has a maximum of 100 hours to find his way back to civilization, alive and unscathed, or he loses the game.

It’s man against nature (and his four best friends) as each action-packed, dramatic episode of CATCH AND RELEASE crisscrosses the globe – from dense jungles to frigid glaciers – to match wits in this game of survival. And with reputations and bragging rights on the line, do these guys have what it takes to survive the ultimate challenge?

CLIPPED! [working title]
Whether it’s a lion, tiger or bear, no grooming design is too crazy for dog groomer extraordinaire Angela Kumpe. The Arkansas groomer specializes in outrageous transformations, and her “my-way-or-the-highway” attitude combined with her amazing skill has all of the South talking and her ornery employees squabbling. Kumpe lets her imagination run wild to fulfill the requests of her demanding clients who have very colorful imaginations. No request is too outrageous, but things can get crazy when Fido enters the shop as an ordinary dog and comes out looking like a bumblebee!

EEL OF FORTUNE [working title]
Animal Planet has found its next big catch. This time, it’s the not the size that matters. This new series follows teams of New England fishermen as they search for the elusive elver eel, a lucrative fish that is a delicacy across many Asian countries. The price of elver eels, once at $50 per pound, has skyrocketed to an unprecedented $2,600 per pound with the industry earning more than $40 million during the 2012 season. Elver eels, which look almost like cellophane noodles, may be tiny, but they can bring a potential windfall to those few lucky fishermen who can obtain an eel-fishing permit in Maine.

Now, the second leading industry in Maine behind lobstering, EEL OF FORTUNE captures the outrageous adrenaline rush and sleepless nights of the eelers who have a “golden ticket” as they embark on their daily journey to capture as many elver eels as they can. But the competition to catch these slippery fish is fierce. With only 400 men and women able to obtain a license, the most passionate and determined fishermen must fight against one another for the hottest fishing spots.

ICE COLD GOLD
Animal Planet’s ICE COLD GOLD spotlights a spirited team of miners who are among the first Americans to prospect for precious metals and gems in parts of Greenland where humans never have set foot before. The six-part series follows eight men who leave behind their families, friends and homeland to strike it rich against all odds while they struggle to survive against the harshest of conditions. Greenland’s a veritable beast, but the motley crew of ICE COLD GOLD miners is up for the challenge. Each thinks he has what it takes to walk away with gold, rubies and sapphires before winter and large mining companies swoop in. What transpires as the miners cope with the unpredictable, harsh unknown? Are they humbled by their journey? Do their personalities get in the way? Most importantly, do they strike ICE COLD GOLD?

MY TINY TERROR [working title]
In MY TINY TERROR, Animal Planet’s small dog trainer travels the country and trains some of the naughtiest and tiniest dogs. While these teacup pups may look sweet, they’re causing mayhem in their owners’ homes. From incessant yapping at strangers to ankle bites that end with hospitalization, our expert has seen it all. He helps families on the verge of giving up these small nightmares and restores harmony to these homes.

POLAR BEAR CROSSING [working title]
It takes a special type of person to live with bears, and the townspeople of Churchill in Manitoba, Canada live with thousands of polar bears year round. In POLAR BEAR CROSSING, the residents of Churchill have chosen to accept these unpredictable creatures as their aggressive neighbors, but their lives are shaped by the “tides” of the migrating bears. Knowing danger could be lurking around the corner, the residents of Churchill are outnumbered two to one by polar bears, so they’ve learned to co-exist with them by braving frequent attacks and living their lives.

TOP HOOKER
TOP HOOKER is an in-your-face, full-throttle competition series that pits 10 expert fishermen against one another in a series of wild, never-before-seen fishing challenges. Unlikely competitors from a fearless harpoon gun-wielding woman to a South-African bodybuilder, the contestants struggle through countless off-the-hook challenges with the hope of being crowned TOP HOOKER and winning the $30,000 bounty! It’s a nautical game of catch and release. Who can catch a spot in the next round – and who’s going to be thrown back home?

TREEHOUSE MASTERS
Beginning May 31, TREEHOUSE MASTERS has viewers climbing to a majestic world up in the treetops with visionary and tree whisperer Pete Nelson as he designs private escapes for those with a passion to reconnect with nature and awaken their inner child. Designing multi-bedroom dream tree houses complete with functional plumbing and electricity to simple, one-room lofts, Pete goes out on a limb to create breathtaking realities for a host of clientele. However, creating these fantasy arboreal homes doesn’t come easy. Pete and his team of designers and carpenters, including son Charlie, must endure Mother Nature’s shifty antics, dangerous construction equipment and dizzy heights in order to build these sanctuaries.

In addition to building these hideaways, Pete, along with his wife, Judy, and daughter, Emily, own and operate TreeHouse Point, a bed and breakfast in Washington, to where people can escape their modern-day realities. In TREEHOUSE MASTERS, Pete brings people closer to nature one tree at a time.

UNDERWORLD [working title]
Expert cave diver Curt Bowen and his team of intrepid explorers are on a deadly quest to explore and find the answers to history’s buried secrets that are submerged in underwater caves across the globe. But finding the answers could cost them their lives. The truth they seek is deep underground in a haunting, alien landscape few humans ever have seen. Traveling to the farthest corners of the globe and following a trail of evidence that leads them ever deeper into the silent, deadly world that lies below, Curt and his team risk it all beneath the Earth’s surface. The beauty they encounter is matched only by the danger they must face as they journey into the UNDERWORLD.

Deadliest Catch Sets Sail for Season Nine

Discovery Channel’s popular reality series Deadliest Catch will debut season nine on April 16, 2013 at 9pm. This season will follow seven skippers – Derrick Ray, Wild Bill” Wichrowski, Sig Hansen, Elliot Neese, Scott Campbell, Jr., Johnathan Hillstrand, and Keith Colburn – as they attempt to navigate the treacherous waters and freezing weather in order to land their share of a $100 million crab season.

Says Northwestern Captain Sig Hansen: “This year a lot of young guys are trying to get a start, make a name for themselves. When you’ve got guys that are hungry, that’s when things get nasty, that’s when the gloves are off. Especially when you’ve got experienced and inexperienced people playing in the same sandbox. That’s when it’s a war.”

And in addition to Deadliest Catch, Discovery will be airing a new one-hour pre-show series titled The Bait. Airing immediately before Deadliest Catch, The Bait will feature the captains talking about what to expect on that night’s episode.

Details on Season Nine:

“This season the seven skippers and their crew are fighting through hell and back again in search of King and Opilio crab. But as the fleet faces off with the raging sea, they are quick to realize, that sometimes the most violent storms can come from within.

Hansen, a 30-year veteran and a third generation fisherman, will match skills against his old rivals, Keith Colburn of the Wizard, the Hillstrand brothers on the Time Bandit and legendary Skipper Wild Bill Wichrowski who will return at the helm of the F/V Cape Caution. Young gun Captain Scott ‘Jr’ Campbell and his newly rebuilt Seabrooke will be there to defend his status as a legend. Meanwhile the youngest skipper in the fleet, Elliott Neese is all in this year as he returns as the owner of his own boat, the F/V Saga. With over $1 million dollars in the hole and ten bucks to his name the stakes have never been higher for Neese.

While the skippers wage war for crab supremacy, the youth seek opportunity. Time Bandit Deckhand Josh Harris attempts to keep his father’s fishing legacy alive, while on the Northwestern both Edgar Hanson and Jake Anderson’s quest for a captain’s chair becomes closer to reality.”

First Look: ‘Carrie’ Movie Trailer Starring Chloe Grace Moretz

Carrie Teaser Poster

Well, you pretty much will know the entire plot of the new Carrie based on the Stephen King book by watching the trailer. The 2+ minute video gives away everything, which is fine if you’ve read the book or watched the original movie. But if you want to go into it without knowing all the details, my advice is don’t want the trailer.

The Plot:

A reimagining of the classic horror tale about Carrie White (Chloë Grace Moretz), a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother (Julianne Moore), who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.

Carrie opens in theaters on October 18, 2013.

Jurassic Park Theme Song…It’s a Catchy Tune

In honor of the re-release of Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park in theaters (this time around in 3D), we’re spotlighting this video from Brett Domino. Domino took John Williams’ original score and added lyrics to it – including a run-down of the dinosaurs that are featured in the Jurassic Park movies.

And in case you need a refresher on the original Jurassic Park, here’s the plot:

Imagine that you are one of the first visitors to Jurassic Park—a melding of scientific discovery and visual imagination. You arrive as a child would, free of preconceptions and ready for anything. Your adventure is about to begin.

Entering the gates of the park, your senses are overwhelmed by the world that surrounds you; the sounds, the smells, even the feel of the earth is curiously different. Somewhere in the distance, you hear the movement of huge animals—the ground shakes with their passing. You are a stranger in an alien world.

You look into the night sky, at stars whose light was born long before humans ever existed; born when a different race of beings walked the planet–swift, powerful animals, rulers of the earth for 160 million years. Like those ancient stars, the Jurassic has left only faint traces of itself—in fossils, footprints, relics of blood cells encased in amber. A time capsule that has remained closed for countless millennia.

Now the time capsule has been opened, and man and dinosaurs, the two rulers of the earth, will meet for the first time.
All our scientific resources have been dedicated to bringing Jurassic Park to reality; a childhood fantasy made real, a place where wonders come to life. It was created to be the ultimate amusement. But someone forgot to tell the dinosaurs.
Meeting them in their environment, we realize they are not monsters, but animals far more agile, far more intelligent and far more dangerous than we guessed. We can give birth to the dinosaurs, but nothing can prepare us for what will happen when the egg hatches.

Jurassic Park is the place where science ends and the unpredictable begins.”

Famke Janssen and Dougray Scott ‘Hemlock Grove’ Interview

Dougray Scott and Famke Janssen in Hemlock Grove

Hemlock Grove, Netflix’s second scripted series, features an interesting assortment of odd characters – some of whom are of the supernatural variety – portrayed by a talented ensemble of actors. And one of the major storylines of the 13-episode series involves the complex relationship between Famke Janssen as Olivia Godfrey, a manipulative mother who may or may not have had something to do with the death of her husband, and Dougray Scott, her brother-in-law who appears to have a fair share of skeletons in his closet.

Together at the 2013 WonderCon in Anaheim, Janssen and Scott proved to be an entertaining team to interview as they chatted up the new Netflix series.

Famke Janssen and Dougray Scott Interview

What was the appeal of Hemlock Grove?

Famke Janssen: “Different reasons, really. You always have to start with the character because ultimately how a project turns out as an actor you just don’t have any control over that, so at the end of the day you have to live with that character. You have to, especially when it comes to 13 episodes or potentially years of your life, you want to think through that decision and think, ‘Is this somebody I can live and grow with?’

When I read that pilot episode that they had written and the book based on it, I thought this is somebody who I could see growing into or growing with. Of course, you never know until it becomes something. That’s the scary thing and I haven’t done much television or whatever this is called, Netflix or something else, but something where you don’t know beforehand what you signed up for. I have really barely any experience in that. I come from, like Dougray, we’ve mostly done films and you read a script, a 110…120 pages, whatever, that are there. and your character has an arc. You know where it’s going. This is a little scary. You never know.”

How collaborative was it? Were you able to change things around to make your character more of what you thought the character should be?

Dougray Scott: “I’m not someone who, as an actor anyway, traditionally, I come originally from theater and I love writers and I revere writers. That’s not to say that things can’t change and evolve and get better, but I always try and go towards the character rather make the character fit me, if you see what I mean. I try and work that way.

I improvise all the whole time and that’s the great fun of it – that’s when you understand the character. But in terms of collaboration, it was kind of a tricky one because the script came quite late so there wasn’t really much time to suggest [changes]. Although I think when we did suggest changes, I think it was for everyone’s benefit.”

Famke Janssen: “We did in the beginning and it really worked out very well.”

Dougray Scott: “That worked really, really well, but I think the problem then became that they were coming hard and fast, the scripts, and so there wasn’t really enough time and so perhaps that’s something in the future that … It’s not an egotistical acting saying, ‘This is what I think,’ because I’m not a writer. I’m an actor, but I’m pretty good at looking at a script and seeing what works and what doesn’t work and why something doesn’t work. There’s no point in complaining unless you do have a solution because then you’re somewhat of a f**khead – [laughing] sorry – and I’m not.”

Can you describe the relationship between your characters? It seems very complicated.

Famke Janssen: “It’s a very complicated relationship. His brother in the show who I was married to committed suicide, and probably not entirely without some input or influence on the part of this character that I play. And if I were married to her, I might do the same thing. They have this wonderful tempestuous, exciting, difficult, passionate relationship full of a lot of love.”

Dougray Scott: “I think originally when he saw Olivia he just fell just completely in love with her because she has this beauty, which Famke does, but also the character does. But she has this enigmatic quality, which comes from something that’s otherworldly as well which he of course didn’t really understand at the beginning. But part of it was to get out of his incredibly mundane and boring f**king life where he was existing at that particular time, but also that’s not to dilute or diminish the strength of Famke’s character at all. It’s just me describing his life as it was when he met Olivia. It is ultimately based on love, but within that love there is distrust and there’s deep dislike as well for her behavior at times.”

Famke Janssen: [Laughing] “I have no idea why.”

Dougray Scott: “He doesn’t believe that she’s a good mother. He thinks the way she treats motherhood is entirely different from the way he treats it. But you look at it objectively. I’m not saying he’s right.”

Famke Janssen: “Believe me, there are things happening in the 13 episodes that I’m not going to give away.”

Dougray Scott: “There are some things that he does as well as a father that I’m a father and I don’t think it’s very healthy the way that he treats his own daughter. So, people in glass houses…”

Can you talk a little bit about playing a villainous character in this show, sort of playing that manipulator?

Famke Janssen: “Yes, I tend to look at the characters and I don’t want to box them in because the moment I do any audience member is going to do the same thing. So I try to look at them objectively, try to find all the good, interesting, different parts of the personality that are there so I won’t put a caricature on the screen, however big or small that screen is.

That’s sort of the way I looked at her is that it’s clearly a very complex kind of character. Her manipulation doesn’t come just purely out of enjoyment of screwing other people over. It’s a much more deep-rooted, complex problem of past and present and future, who she is and what she wants to be, and the people around her, relationships with other people, that kind of stuff. That to me just becomes a different way of looking at somebody. I didn’t look at her purely as a villain and throughout the show we will see different colors of her. I would have been really not pleased to play her if this was a one-note villainous type of role.”

Have they talked to you about a second season?

Famke Janssen: “No, I know nothing about it. I think it’s a little bit up in the air.”

Dougray Scott: “Yeah, I have no idea.”

Would you want to come back and play her again?

Famke Janssen: [Laughing] “I don’t know that we have a choice, but to come back.”

Dougray Scott: [Laughing] “The thing is we’re both very European, obviously, and that is…”

Famke Janssen: “I’m so European, right. I was born and raised in Holland and he’s from Scotland. I just say it as it is. I have trouble doing the America whatever. I’ve got to learn.”

But you don’t have to like your character, you just have to find them interesting, right?

Famke Janssen: “Interesting, yes, but maybe like certain aspects of them. I think the moment you judge a character you have a certain distance to that character that is you have to get people inside you in some way watching it. Otherwise, it’s not that interesting.”

You were so outstanding Nip/Tuck. That was a fascinating character.

Famke Janssen: “Oh, thank you. Yes, it was a fascinating role. And actually my fear was, because it was my only real TV experience I ever had, is when I first read this I said to the guys involved that I did not want to repeat anything I’d done on Nip/Tuck and if that’s where they wanted to take it in any kind of direction similar to that I wasn’t interested.

It’s never fun to repeat yourself. We all get typecast, for crying out loud. Every single time we get asked, I look at a script and like, ‘Right, of course I’m asked to play that person.’ You just have to try really hard to make that character different from what people expect because they cast you from whatever they’ve seen you in before generally. It’s really hard to be cast as something else, don’t you find?”

Dougray Scott: “Yes, it is. Occasionally you do get an opportunity to be someone completely different.”

What new sides of both of you are we going to see in Hemlock Grove?

Dougray Scott: “Wouldn’t you say I’ve never played an incredibly intelligent, almost unbearably beautiful psychiatrist before, so that’s a first.”

Famke Janssen: “I never made love with a beautifully exciting, handsome, intelligent psychiatrist before, so there you go.”

All 13 episodes of Hemlock Grove will be released on Netflix on April 19, 2013.

History Renews ‘Vikings’ for Season 2

Vikings will be sticking around for another season, so says History Channel’s Dirk Hoogstra, EVP, Development and Programming. The network’s first scripted drama has caught on with audiences and is ranked as the #1 new cable series of 2013. Vikings has been averaging 5 million viewers, with ratings growing week-over-week.

The 10-episode season two renewal came with four episodes still to air of season one.

Vikings is a win win for us. As our first scripted series, Vikings has paid off in a big way with critical acclaim, strong ratings and a passionate, loyal fan base. It came out of the gate strong and has stayed on top, solidifying HISTORY as a major player in the scripted genre, just as we are in reality,” said Hoogstra. “We could not be more proud of the entire cast and crew and everyone involved in the making of Vikings. [Writer/creator] Michael Hirst has captured audiences with his complex, compelling characters and brought the unknown, epic world of these warriors to life. Season Two will begin production this summer to air in 2014.”

The Plot:

Vikings tells the extraordinary tales of the lives and epic adventures of these warriors. The drama portrays the world of these Dark Age raiders, traders, explorers – not from an outsider’s view, but, through the eyes of Viking society.

While Vikings is filled with conflict, warfare and bloodshed – for these were extreme times – it is a family saga at heart. It follows the adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel), a curious, compelling man who is always looking to break through barriers and discover new worlds to conquer. Ragnar is deeply frustrated by the unadventurous policies of his local chieftain, Earl Haraldson (Gabriel Byrne), who continues to send his Vikings raiders east every summer, to the Baltic states and Russia, whose populations are as materially poor as themselves.

Joining Fimmel and Byrne are Katheryn Winnick as Lagertha, a fierce shield maiden and Ragnar’s wife; Jessalyn Gilsig as Siggy, Earl Haraldson’s beautiful wife; George Blagden as Athelstan, a young, innocent Christian monk captured by Ragnar on his first raid on England, Clive Standen as Rollo, Ragnar’s impulsive, wild, care-free brother and Gustaf Skarsgard a ship builder who designs the new generation of Vikings ships.
