Entertainment Universe and Film Star are teaming up for the theatrical release of Snake & Mongoose starring Jesse Williams as ‘the Snake’ and Richard Blake as ‘the Mongoo$e.’ The film, about one of the biggest rivalries in racing history, will be launched in theaters on September 6, 2013 and also features Noah Wyle, Tim Blake Nelson, Fred Dryer, John Heard, Ashley Hinshaw, Ian Ziering, Leonardo Nam, Kim Shaw, and Julie Mond.

Entertainment Universe has set a 25-city release timed to coincide with the close of the National Hot Rod Association’s U.S. Nationals. The cities in which Snake & Mongoose will debut are the same cities that host the NHRA national event and nostalgia races.

“We are thrilled that the film excited Film Star Partners chair, David Williams, who has more than 30 years experience in the industry and has provided over a billion dollars of P&A to both independents and the studios during his illustrious career,” said Robin Broidy, Chair of Entertainment Universe.

The Plot:

Snake & Mongoose tells the story of the groundbreaking accomplishments of drivers Don “the Snake” Prudhomme and Tom “the Mongoo$e” McEwen in the world of drag racing as well as how the two unlikely figures revolutionized entertainment sports marketing when they attracted Mattel’s Hot Wheels Division to sponsor them.

The film highlights the formative, dangerous, and glory years of drag racing during the ‘60s and ‘70s. Prudhomme, a seven-time NHRA U.S. Nationals winner and four-time NHRA World Champion, and Tom McEwen, an NHRA U.S. Nationals winner who also held many prestigious titles in other national events, figured out how to set aside their often bitter rivalry on the track to promote the sport. Prudhomme and McEwen raced each other at speeds in excess of 200mph for over 30 years.

BBC Finds Its Musketeers

The upcoming drama The Musketeers has found its stars. BBC America announced Luke Pasqualino will play D’Artagnan, Tom Burke is Athos, Santiago Cabrera is Aramis, and Howard Charles is Porthos in the series which will start filming this month and will premiere in 2014.

This version of The Musketeers is a contemporary take on the classic Alexandre Dumas story. The 10-part series also features Peter Capaldi, Tamla Kari, Maimie McCoy, and Hugo Speer.

“I’m thrilled to be working with such a dynamic, talented, and attractive ensemble cast on our new version of The Musketeers,” said series creator Adrian Hodges. “This series is all about passion, romance, heroism, and action, and I can’t think of a better group of actors to embody those diverse qualities. I’m thrilled by their ability and commitment and honored they’ve chosen to come on board to help us create what we hope will be our modern and original take on this great story and its classic characters.”

The Details: Set on the streets of seventeenth-century Paris, where law and order is more an idea than reality, the series follows Musketeers Athos, Aramis, and Porthos. They are far more than King Louis XIII’s personal bodyguards. They stand resolutely for social justice, for honor, for valor, for love – and for the thrill of it.

D’Artagnan, a skilled fighter from rural Gascony, meets the three Musketeers while on a mission to right the wrong of his father’s death. Although he meets the men in unfortunate circumstances, he finds kindred spirits in the other soldiers. Athos, who has rejected his noble roots to become a Musketeer, has a past shrouded in mystery. He quickly befriends D’Artagnan, but is prone to getting in trouble.

Porthos is a larger-than-life character, who has come from humble beginnings to become a soldier in the most elite regiment in the land, finding a family in the other Musketeers. Never short of admirers, Aramis has an effortless charm which leads him in and out of love. Despite this, he is a shrewd pragmatist who is ferocious in battle and commands a key place in the brotherhood.

Constance Bonacieux (Kari) leads a dull but comfortable life married to a cloth merchant, but her life is turned upside down when D’Artagnan tumbles into her life, and she becomes involved with The Musketeers.

Cardinal Richlieu (Capaldi), while striving to achieve his vision of a thoroughly modern France, is a shadowy character who will stop at nothing to achieve his objectives. Milady (McCoy) is the Cardinal’s secret weapon, the most mysterious and beautiful of villains whose motives are often concealed.

The King relies on the advice of The Cardinal, his shrewd wife Queen Anne and also Captain Treville (Speer), the brave and respected commander of The Musketeers who keeps an eye on the soldiers to ensure they stay out of trouble. The series bursts with escapism, adventure and romance and is set to thrill audiences with cracking stories.

Radha Mitchell and Luke Goss lead the cast of ABC’s one-hour drama Red Widow, premiering on March 3, 2013. The new series is based on the Dutch series Penoza and involves the drug business and Russian gangsters.

In addition to Luke Goss as Luther and Radha Mitchell as Marta Walraven, the cast includes Lee Tergesen as Mike Tomlin, Rade Sherbedzija as Andrei Petrov, Wil Traval as Irwin Petrov, Clifton Collins Jr as FBI Agent James Ramos, and Sterling Beaumon as Gabriel Walraven. Suleka Mathew is Dina Tomlin, Erin Moriarty plays Natalie Walraven, Jaime Ray Newman is Kat Castillo, Jakob Salvati is Boris Walraven, and Goran Visnjic plays Nicholae Schiller.

The Synopsis: Marta Walraven seems to have an idyllic life. A stay-at-home mom in tony Marin County, just north of San Francisco, she is devoted to her three children and her husband. Behind this perfect façade, however, is a more complicated story: Evan, Marta’s husband, supports the family by exporting marijuana. Marta is familiar with the world of organized crime: her father, Andrei Petrov, and his loyal bodyguard, Luther, are Bratva – Russian gangsters – in San Francisco. It’s a world from which she and her sister Kat always wanted to escape, though they never quite did.

But when Evan is brutally murdered in their driveway, everything changes. Marta’s first concern is to protect her children – yet when FBI Agent James Ramos promises Marta justice in exchange for her cooperation, she cannot go against the Bratva code, and refuses his help.

Slowly, the truth about Evan’s murder begins to emerge: Evan’s business partners – Marta’s scheming brother, Irwin Petrov, and their best friend, the hapless Mike Tomlin – were involved in the theft of millions of dollars of cocaine from the formidable international crime boss, Nicholae Schiller. Evan paid with his life, but as far as Schiller is concerned, his debt is not clear. It falls to Marta, as Evan’s widow, to navigate the criminal underworld in order to repay this debt – in whatever way Schiller sees fit.

Hounded by the FBI on one hand and by Schiller on the other, while also trying to raise three grieving kids on her own, Marta discovers a tenacity she never knew she had. As she hunts for the truth about her husband’s death and struggles to keep her children safe, she’ll rely on her resourcefulness, determination and her Bratva DNA like never before. But in order to beat her adversaries at their own deadly game, how far is Marta willing to go?

Nicholas Hoult Talks ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’

Nicholas Hoult has two movies on theater screens at the same time and in both he gets to rescue a gorgeous lady. In Warm Bodies, he’s a zombie who saves Teresa Palmer’s character from being eaten by his undead buddies. In Jack the Giant Slayer, he saves a princess from human-eating giants.

And in this interview video courtesy of Warner Bros Pictures, Hoult talks about playing Jack and working with Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, and director Bryan Singer. He also discusses the ‘guardians’ in the film and what audiences can expect from the land of giants.

The Plot: Jack the Giant Slayer tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack (Hoult) into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend—and gets the chance to become a legend himself.

Movie Review: ’21 and Over’

21 and Over first photo
A scene from '21 and Over' - Courtesy of Relativity Media

When it came to writing a review about 21 & Over I thought about simply posting a link to my review of The Hangover and calling it a night.

After all, the writer/directors of this college-set tale of drunkenness and strained friendship were the same people who penned the story of a Vegas-set tale of drunkenness and strained friendship (Jon Lucas & Scott Moore). Although there is no fourth friend here, even The Hangover really was just about the three best friends that anyone could have. The same is true of 21 & Over, with Miles Teller playing the Bradley Cooper role (with a touch of Galifiankis), Skylar Astin playing the Ed Helms role (with a touch of Bradley Cooper), and Justin Chon as Justin Bartha (with a touch of Galifiankis).

Confusing? Yeah, well what it meant to me is that Lucas & Moore basically understand a limited set of archetypes and were hoping this would recapture the same lightning in a bottle. But much like the problems inherent in The Hangover Part II, this suffers slightly from taking the same pig and putting it a barely different dress. Let’s take a look at the similarities and replaced elements shall we?

The movie starts with a scene from the end and then rewinds so the audience can see how things went astray.

Rather than Heather Graham as a stripper who marries one of the guys, we have Sarah Wright as a sexual tease that Astin tries to hook up with throughout the movie.

They’ve traded a tiger for a bison.

Instead of a montage of the guys playing blackjack to raise money, we’ve got a montage of the guys bar-hopping as Chon descends closer and closer to alcohol poisoning.

In both, it’s a general mystery as to how these completely diverse personalities were ever friends to begin with, and throughout they constantly test the limits of that friendship.

In Vegas, it was Ken Jeong and his lackeys chasing the fellas because they stole his purse. Here Jonathan Keltz and his lackeys are chasing the fellas because they stole his phone.

The list actually could continue but I’ve got a lot to do this weekend. The most ridiculous thing of it all though is that I liked this movie. Ha ha! Twist! You thought all that negativity would go another way. That’s why you’ve got to read the whole review!

Now, I’m not going to say it’s perfect, nor is it anywhere as good as The Hangover. For a rated-R movie about debauchery in college, this is sorely lacking in pushing the boundaries of the rating and could use far more nudity, ANY sex, and should not have thrown in a super serious dramatic angle about Chon’s mental health that brings the movie to a screeching halt every time it’s mentioned.

Still, there are plenty of funny jokes and embarrassing situations. Teller and Astin play off of each other well (except when the script tries to grow a brain now and then) and Chon does a nice job of being that kid who gets a little crazy when the alcohol takes over. If you liked Project X and The Hangover, this falls somewhere in-between the two and exceeded my lukewarm expectations. It doesn’t have that feeling of being a comedy that will stand the test of time but it’ll do for right now.

Also, just for good measure, let me write “The Hangover” one more time. I apparently didn’t take the time to write gooder.

GRADE: B-

21 and Over hit theaters on March 1, 2013 and is rated R for crude and sexual content, pervasive language, some graphic nudity, drugs and drinking.
