DJ Qualls has landed a guest starring role on TNT’s Perception. The drama starring Eric McCormack as Dr. Daniel Pierce will find Qualls playing a tech-savvy FBI agent “who specializes in investigating cyber crimes. When an online social game Caleidoscope becomes the center of a homicide case, Pierce relies on Fleckner to decipher the clues within this virtual world. By digging into a suspect’s online account Fleckner hopes to bring forth evidence that sheds light on a case in which the line between reality and fantasy becomes blurred.”
Qualls can also be seen this season on The CW’s Supernatural. His other credits include Memphis Beat, Scrubs, Lost, Breaking Bad, The Big Bang Theory, and Criminal Minds.
The Plot:
In Perception, McCormack plays Dr. Daniel Pierce, an eccentric neuroscience professor with paranoid schizophrenia who is recruited by the FBI to help solve complex cases. Pierce has an intimate knowledge of human behavior and a masterful understanding of the way the mind works. He also has an uncanny ability to see patterns and look past people’s conscious emotions to see what lies beneath.
Pierce’s mind may be brilliant, but it’s also damaged. He struggles with hallucinations and paranoid delusions brought on by his schizophrenia. Oddly, Daniel considers some of his hallucinations to be a gift. They occasionally allow him to make connections that his conscious mind can’t yet process. At other times, the hallucinations become Daniel’s greatest curse, leading him to behave in irrational, potentially dangerous ways.
Daniel’s mental condition and offbeat manner make it difficult for him to achieve the close friendships and intimate relationships he craves. He’s in his element when solving an intricate puzzle or a coded message. But in unfamiliar situations, he can quickly become overwhelmed, and only his favorite music and a crossword puzzle have the power to make things right again.
Animal Planet’s bringing back the popular rescue series Pit Bulls and Parolees for season five. The series recently aired its most-watched episode to date with the season four finale titled “Storm Surge.” That episode helped make the just-completed fourth season the series’ most watched season overall.
Season five will premiere this fall with 16 brand new episodes featuring Tia Maria Torres and the Villalobos Rescue Center.
A Recap of Pit Bulls and Parolees Season 4:
Last season, Torres faced her greatest challenge yet: rebuilding Villalobos after moving the entire operation to New Orleans. With her family, trusted parolees and a crew of new Louisiana parolees by her side, Torres met unexpected challenges as she pulled out all the stops to run the rescue center in an entirely new environment. But no matter what struggles the team faced, the dedication to providing rescued pit bulls with safe and loving homes remained relentless.
When it comes to choosing to see a film, there are a number of factors that can greatly influence my decision. I’ve always been fascinated by submarines, enjoy a good story about the Cold War maybe more than the next guy, and will happily watch most movies featuring Ed Harris and William Fichtner. That Phantom combines all of those aspects and was also filmed in my hometown of San Diego meant that taking the time out to attend a screening was a no-brainer. Of course, the big question would be if it could live up to its potential.
First off, this isn’t some big-budget Hollywood tent pole event so while the filmmakers were able to shoot onboard a real submarine, many of the action scenes look a little too much like toys in the bathtub (I’m exaggerating somewhat but we’ve all been spoiled with expensive miniatures and CGI). Also, I hope you can get past the notion that while everyone in the movie is supposed to be Russian, no one speaks with an accent. I found myself constantly distracted by this or completely forgetting they were Soviets until some mention of the Communist agenda was discussed. This may be a deal-breaker for some people, and I wouldn’t blame them, though I did my best to stay focused.
The other key distraction is an ending that can really only be described as schmaltzy. Obviously, I can’t in good conscience spoil what that means but suffice it to say, it’s a trite and ineffective way to resolve the story. It essentially deflates what tension had been built up and removed me from any attachment to the events that had just unfolded.
On the plus side, Ed Harris and William Fichtner make a great team of Captain and Executive Officer. Their performances drive the boat, so to speak, and it’s easy to root for their success again the likes of a slimy David Duchovny brought onboard to test a mysterious piece of equipment. The flashback scenes of a tragic incident in Harris’ past are wonderfully handled, almost delivered in a horror genre sensibility, and help to increase the claustrophobic nature of the movie so ably portrayed via the small confines of the submarine.
It did take a bit of time to find a comfort zone with the movie. The early introductions to some of the sailors rang hollow and seemed to come out of some paint-by-numbers script. There’s, of course, the problem with the ending but I will give the film full credit for a thoroughly engaging and at times thrilling middle section. Re-arranging the opening scenes to be told via flashback would have dropped the audience into the thick of things much quicker, and a complete re-write of the ending would have been nice as well.
All that being said, if you’re a big fan of submarine movies, there are enough good scenes in the middle to outweigh the problems on the ends. For people trying to spot San Diego landmarks, there’s not much to find, as most of the movie takes place inside the submarine. You’ll just have to be content with knowing it was filmed here.
I walked in with very light expectations and saw them partially exceeded for a good chunk of the movie, only to have them dashed in the last 10 minutes. Still, there’s something to be said for immersing yourself in film via a nice, dark theater so if you think this one is worth a try, I wouldn’t try too hard to stop you and think the big screen is best in this instance. If you wait for the home market, maybe make sure to dim the lights nice and low and refrain from stretching out on the couch. You can only suspend your sense of disbelief so far.

What did I learn this week at the movies? That Fee, Fye, Foe, and Fumm are actually the names of certain giants. That monks who look like friends of Friar Tuck probably safeguard a dark magic to protect the kingdom. Gosh, I was even reminded that princesses often fall for polite but chivalrous farm boys. Of course, whether Jack the Giant Slayer is a documentary could probably be argued (or that it was shot in real time).
But more importantly, in the movie there’s a Warwick Davis sighting! Sure, it’s only for a few minutes but what a glorious few minutes they are. Don’t forget to plan your Leprechaunathons soon, St. Paddy’s Day is coming up quick. Ahhh … What? Oh, yeah right. The review.
So anyway, the story here is of course based on the fairy tale and most of the key elements are represented. Here, the adventurous lad named Jack (what a coincidence) who sells a horse for magic beans is played by Nicholas Hoult (who can also be seen in theaters right now as an adorable zombie in the underrated and enjoyable Warm Bodies). Jack meets a princess (Eleanor Tomlinson), travels up the beanstalk, and becomes a key player in the war between humans and giants.
Aside from some early animation which looked rather unfinished and a touch awful actually, the movie does a nice job of balancing the child-friendly aesthetic one thinks of for kids’ tales and the more realistic brutality one would expect from giants who think homo sapiens is quite a delicious delicacy. The 3D is completely useless however, and while I’ll chalk some of that up to the possibility of the screening itself being slightly out-of-focus, I saw enough elements actually break the plane of the movie screen to realize that the filmmakers weren’t trying all that often.
The selling point to the movie is its cast. Hoult does a nice job balancing the naïve farm boy shtick with the brave hero ideal. Tomlinson is the right mix of beauty, curiosity, and compassion. Ian McShane makes for a wonderful and imposing King. Stanley Tucci always adds a little extra panache, especially when it comes to villains. Ewan McGregor gives his heroic knight a nice amount of flair. Bill Nighy was such a perfect choice for the voice of the giant General and Eddie Marsan and Ewen Bremner give two characters that would normally be quite stock actual screen presence and help make the movie feel a bit more like a true ensemble. (And did I mention WARWICK DAVIS! I did? Oh yeah. But still!)
While the nearly two-hour runtime should have been trimmed a bit, Jack the Giant Slayer delivers where it should for the most part and the strength of the actors carried the movie through some of the leaner scenes. You could see it on the big screen too if you like, but just make sure to choose a 2D showing and buy yourself something sugary with the savings instead. Only good 3D should be rewarded … and this isn’t good 3D. Fans of the fantasy action genre will be satisfied though and this will even make for a pleasant diversion on a lazy afternoon when it eventually hits the small screen.
GRADE: B-
Jack the Giant Slayer hits theaters on March 1, 2013 and is rated PG-13 for intense scenes of fantasy action violence, some frightening images and brief language.

For those who plan ahead, Fox has just unveiled their season finale dates as well as their 2013 summer premiere schedule. Frustrated bosses will hand over the reins of their companies to the employees, offering their respective staffs a chance to make changes in the workplace – even if it means letting co-workers go. Each participating office will have its own set of issues, which will force them to take a hard look at what’s plaguing their workplace and answer the toughest question of all: DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO GO?
