‘The Killing’ Isn’t Dead After All

AMC and Fox Television have officially confirmed they’re resurrecting The Killing for a third season. And while that’s great news for fans of the series, it’s not such great news for fans of Billy Campbell and Michelle Forbes who reportedly will not be returning for more of The Killing.

Per the official announcement, Veena Sud will be returning as executive producer, writer, and showrunner. Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman will be back leading the cast. Season number three will begin production in February and will focus on a brand new case that will be “resolved over the course of 12 episodes.” That appears to be a promise, folks, so if they pull the old bait and switch on us, we have every reason to be angry.

AMC President Charlie Collier stated: “The Killing from day one has been a truly original take on the crime drama. Veena Sud and the rest of the talented creative team are hard at work shaping the lives of Linden and Holder, portrayed by the terrific Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman. We’re so pleased to welcome back The Killing for another season.”

“I couldn’t be happier to know that I will be returning to work with AMC, FTVS, and Mireille and Joel on what is and has always been a passion project for me. To the fans that have supported the series, thank you for doing so. My team and I will work hard to deliver the best story that we can for season three,” added Veena Sud.

The Basics of Season 3: A year after closing the Rosie Larsen case, Sarah Linden is no longer a detective. But when her ex-partner Stephen Holder’s search for a runaway girl leads him to discover a gruesome string of murders that connects to a previous murder investigation by Linden, she is drawn back into the life she thought she’d left behind.

No Death Star? The Empire Responds to the Obama Administration

The battle rages on as the Empire has issued a statement in response to the government’s denial of a petition to secure resources and funding and begin building a Death Star by 2016. The official White House response – titled “This Isn’t the Petition Response You’re Looking For” – claimed building a Death Star would not be possible for a wide variety of reasons including:

– The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000. We’re working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it.

– The Administration does not support blowing up planets.

– Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?

Paul Shawcross, author of the response and the Chief of the Science and Space Branch at the White House Office of Management and Budget, wrapped up his reply with: “We are living in the future! Enjoy it. Or better yet, help build it by pursuing a career in a science, technology, engineering or math-related field. The President has held the first-ever White House science fairs and Astronomy Night on the South Lawn because he knows these domains are critical to our country’s future, and to ensuring the United States continues leading the world in doing big things.

If you do pursue a career in a science, technology, engineering or math-related field, the Force will be with us! Remember, the Death Star’s power to destroy a planet, or even a whole star system, is insignificant next to the power of the Force.”

Now the Empire has fired a shot back, with a message posted on StarWars.com:

IMPERIAL CENTER, CORUSCANT – The overwhelming military superiority of the Galactic Empire has been confirmed once again by the recent announcement by the President of the United States that his nation would not attempt to build a Death Star, despite the bellicose demands of the people of his tiny, aggressive planet. “It is doubtless that such a technological terror in the hands of so primitive a world would be used to upset the peace and sanctity of the citizens of the Galactic Empire,“ said Governor Wilhuff Tarkin of the Outer Rim Territories. “Such destructive power can only be wielded to protect and defend by so enlightened a leader as Emperor Palpatine.”

Representatives on behalf of the nation-state leader from the unimaginatively named planet refused to acknowledge the obvious cowardice of their choice, preferring instead to attribute the decision to fiscal responsibility. “The costs of construction they cited were ridiculously overestimated, though I suppose we must keep in mind that this miniscule planet does not have our massive means of production,” added Admiral Conan Motti of the Imperial Starfleet.

Emissaries of the Emperor also caution any seditious elements within the Galactic Senate not to believe Earth’s exaggerated claims of there being a weakness in the Death Star design. “Any attacks made upon such a station – should one ever be built – would be a useless gesture,” added Motti.

This Last Lonely Place Finishes Filming

Funded by Kickstarter and backed by the Humphrey Bogart estate, the independent thriller This Last Lonely Place has finished up filming. The movie was shot in LA in late 2012 and is written and directed by Steve Anderson (The Big Empty). Rhys Coiro, Carly Pope, and Xander Berkeley star, with Richard Portnow, Michelle Krusiec, Jeananne Goossen, and Erin Matthews co-starring.

Commenting on the production, writer/director Anderson said, “It was an incredible shoot. We shot in iconic locations, such as the penthouse of the Chateau Marmont, the Polo Lounge in the Beverly Hills Hotel, the Sunset Strip, and Rodeo Drive. For most of the exterior locations, we just showed up in the cab and grabbed the shots. We worked with a very small crew, who all did multiple jobs. Our brave cast really believed in this project, and their support made our innovative production tactics possible. Over forty days, shooting right here in Los Angeles, all for 100K. Amazing.”

Addressing the Humphrey Bogart estate’s connection to the film, manager of the estate Robbert de Klerk stated: “We had been looking for an inspired way to honor Humphrey Bogart’s legacy of supporting his fellow artists. Humphrey Bogart was known for taking risks. He was one of the first actors to start his own production company when he left Warner Brothers in 1948 to start Santana Productions. In so many ways, Anderson and our incredibly talented and dedicated cast captured the true independent spirit that Bogie was known for. This collaboration with Steve Anderson has been one of those rare and wonderful examples of the old and new coming together, and Stephen Bogart and I think this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”

The Plot:

This Last Lonely Place revolves around an injured war vet cab driver (Coiro) who picks up a wealthy investment banker (Berkeley) late one night in Beverly Hills. On edge, the banker confesses to a shady investment scheme, and after picking up his mistress (Pope), it is revealed that a terrible crime has just been committed. Drawn into a conspiracy gone awry, the cab driver is now at their mercy. As the long dark cab ride progresses – through the lonely streets and back alleys of Los Angeles – dark layers of deceit come to light.

A Look Back at Dick Van Dyke’s Life and Career – Courtesy of SAG:

The Emmy-winning Van Dyke made his television-acting debut in 1957 and Broadway debut in 1959. The following year his career soared when he was cast opposite Chita Rivera in the Broadway production of Bye Bye Birdie. His performance as Albert Peterson earned Van Dyke a Tony® Award and brought him to the attention of Reiner, who signed him for a pilot opposite newcomer Moore. In 1963, Van Dyke spent his series’ hiatus shooting the film version of Bye Bye Birdie in 1963 followed by What a Way to Go and Disney’s 1964 musical classic Mary Poppins, which won five Academy Awards®, including one for star Julie Andrews (recipient of the 2006 Life Achievement Award). Van Dyke earned a Golden Globe® nomination and, with Andrews, a Grammy®. A run of films followed including Lt. Robin Crusoe, USN, Divorce American Style, Fitzwilly, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Comic, directed by Reiner, among others. He returned to movies again in 1979’s The Runner Stumbles, 1990’s Dick Tracy and more recently, the Ben Stiller comedy Night at the Museum (2006). On the small screen, his numerous roles include the crime-solving physician Dr. Mark Sloan in Diagnosis: Murder, which ran from 1993 to 2001. The ever-energetic Van Dyke has written several books and in 2000, formed Dick Van Dyke & the Vantastix, an a cappella quartet. Among the venues they’ve played are the Disney Concert Hall and Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., with the President and First Lady in the front row.

For nearly 20 years Van Dyke has been committed to volunteering at Los Angeles’ century-old shelter, The Midnight Mission. He helped raise millions for their new building program and is there every Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and times in between offering comfort and cheer. He is passionate about raising funds for music and art programs for public schools and became a spokesperson for the National Reye’s Syndrome Foundation in 1967 after losing a granddaughter to that disease. In 2010, he was named the first spokesperson for the Cell Therapy Foundation.
