One Direction is Named Artist of the Year

MTV…you know, the channel that used to be all about music & music videos…has spoken, issuing their annual Artists of the Year list. And this year it’s popular boy band One Direction who wound up snagging the top spot.

One Direction was chosen by a team of MTV music staffers while Carly Rae Jepsen ended up winning the title of Song of the Year for “Call Me Maybe.” Meanwhile, it was all about fan voting when it came to choosing the winner of the Most Passionate Fan Army title, with Demi Lovato and her Lovatics earning the most votes.

MTV named MGK as the Best MTV Performance of 2012 and Kill the Noise snatced up the title of MTV’s Clubland’s #PICKOFTHEYEAR.

“MTV, we cannot thank you enough. Artist of the Year, it is an absolute honor. We’ve had an amazing year and this is the icing on the cake, so thank you so much,” stated One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson.

“We want to thank you, MTV for all your support. You’ve supported us from very early on. And a massive thank you to all the fans. This wouldn’t be possible without you, so thank you once again. This is amazing and we’ll see you soon,” added One Direction’s Harry Styles.

Commenting on her Song of the Year win, Carly Rae Jepsen said, “I have to thank the two other writers, Joshua Ramsay and Travish Crowe. When we worked on this song together we were not expecting this year to turn out to be the crazy adventure that it is. Thank you to the fans, the team, my family and MTV! Thanks to you.”

Martin Scorsese Directs, Produces a Clinton Documentary

HBO and Oscar-winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese are teaming up for a documentary on the 42nd President of the United States, William Jefferson Clinton. Clinton will be working with Scorsese on the project which will “explore his perspectives on history, politics, culture and the world.”
 
Scorsese is also producing the documentary with Steve Bing.
 
“President Clinton is one of the most compelling figures of our time, whose world view and perspective, combined with his uncommon intelligence, make him a singular voice on the world stage,” stated Richard Plepler, CEO of HBO and Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. “This documentary, under Marty’s gifted direction, creates a unique opportunity for the President to reflect on myriad issues that have consumed his attention and passion throughout both his Presidency and post-Presidency.”
 
“A towering figure who remains a major voice in world issues, President Clinton continues to shape the political dialogue both here and around the world,” stated Scorsese. “Through intimate conversations, I hope to provide greater insight into this transcendent figure.”
 
Commenting on the documentary, President Clinton was quoted as saying: “I am pleased that legendary director Martin Scorsese and HBO have agreed to do this film. I look forward to sharing my perspective on my years as President, and my work in the years since, with HBO’s audience.”
 
Scorsese and HBO have collaborated on three previous projects: Public Speaking (2010), George Harrison: Living in the Material World (2011), and Boardwalk Empire.

Paramount Pictures offers up this first official, not-a-teaser-or-an-announcement-of-a-trailer, trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness. The action looks amped up, the safety of the crew of the Enterprise is in jeopardy, and Benedict Cumberbatch appears to be enjoying tearing things up.
 
Star Trek Into Darkness was directed by J.J. Abrams and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Peter Weller.

The Plot:
 
When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Nathan Fillion Will Host the WGA Awards

Castle star Nathan Fillion has been tapped to host the 2013 Writers Guild Awards set for February 17, 2013. The star-studded event will be held at the Marriot Los Angeles L.A. Live in downtown LA.

Stated Fillion: “When I first accepted the honor of hosting the Writers Guild Awards, I was confused and actually thought I was receiving one. Since I play a writer on TV, I felt perhaps someone was under the impression I deserved an award and I wasn’t about to correct them. However, now I’m in the perfect position to present myself with whichever award I choose. Who’s going to know? At the very least, I can network with the most talented writers in the business in preparation for my next round of unemployment. It’s a win/win.”

“We think Nathan’s an extraordinary choice to host the 2013 Writers Guild Awards,” said Executive Producer Cort Casady. “Not only does he play a writer brilliantly on Castle, but also, in addition to acting, he sings, dances, is a popular voice talent, and has a great gift for comedy. And with over 1.5 million Twitter followers, Nathan brings a smart, enthusiastic audience to our celebration of writing.”

Fillion is currently seen on television in the fifth season of Castle and has a starring role in Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing set for theatrical release on June 7, 2013. He’ll also be seen co-starring as ‘Hermes’ in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters hitting theaters on August 16, 2013.

Another group has revealed their list of the best of 2012 in both films and television. The International Press Academy, a group of working freelance and staff writers, bloggers, broadcasters, and photographers from more than 20 different countries, unveiled the winners of this year’s awards during a ceremony held on Sunday, December 16th in Beverly Hills, CA.

First Look: Drift Trailer

The Australian surf drama Drift is showing off a new trailer featuring Sam Worthington, Myles Pollard and Xavier Samuel. Written and co-directed by Morgan O’Neill, Wrekin Hill Entertainment is planning to release the film theatrically in North America in early 2013.

Australia, 1970s. The Kelly brothers, Andy and Jimmy, have one great passion: riding big waves. As kids, their mother escaped from Sydney to Margaret River, a sleepy coastal town with some of the world’s most challenging and dangerous waves. For the next 12 years, the boys perfected their surfing skills, always searching for the perfect ride. Free-spirited Jimmy is a gifted surfer and innovator but he starts to slip toward a life of crime to help the family out of debt. Andy makes a big decision. Quitting a stable job, he bets on Jimmy’s surf inventions and his own business skills and launches a backyard surf gear business. They rethink board design, craft homemade wetsuits and sell their merchandise out of their van.
 
Encouraged by their new friends, travelling bohemian surf photographer and filmmaker JB (Sam Worthington) and his gorgeous Hawaiian surfer companion, Lani, who stirs the two brothers’ hearts, they start to seek ways to expand.
 
After they get mixed up with a local drug dealer, it looks like everything they built up, will be ruined…
 
Set in breathtaking locations and inspired by the true story of Australia’s legendary surfwear moguls, the film chronicles the rise of surf brands and the expansion of the laidback surf attitude as a global lifestyle. A story of passion and corruption, friendship and loyalty, deadly addictions and fractured relationships, Drift tells a tale of courage and the will to survive against all odds.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences says that the competition has narrowed to just seven films in the Makeup and Hairstyling category for the 2013 Academy Awards. The films, in alphabetical order, are:

The next step in the process brings all members of the Academy’s Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch together on January 5, 2013 to watch 10 minute excerpts from final seven films. They will then vote for the three films that will compete for the Oscars.
 
Nominees will be announced on January 10, 2013 with the Academy Awards to be held on February 24th.

Camryn Joins One Direction on Tour

One Direction announced their 2013 European tour opening act…and it’s pop/rocker Camryn. Camryn will be joining the boy band on the 63-date tour which kicks off on February 23, 2013 in London. The tour, which is already sold out, will be Camryn’s second with the group.

Among the tunes Camryn’s set to perform is her new single “Now Or Never.” Commenting on the upcoming tour with One Direction, Camryn stated: “To be invited back on tour with a band whose album is #1 in 32 countries is beyond words. I have so many fans in Europe that I can’t wait to meet. Plus, I get to bring my band with me this time around, so I’ll be rocking out even harder!”

Wahlberg and Crowe in New ‘Broken City’ Trailer

Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe, and Catherine Zeta-Jones team up for the thriller Broken City directed by Allen Hughes and hitting theaters on January 18, 2013. And in support of next month’s debut of the drama, 20th Century Fox has revealed a new trailer.

The Plot:

Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg) has a promising career as a New York City cop until the night he is involved in a controversial shooting. Stripped of his badge but kept out of jail by New York’s popular Mayor (Russell Crowe), he re-makes himself as a private investigator.

Times are tough, and when the mayor offers Billy $50,000 to investigate the First Lady’s (Catherine Zeta-Jones) extra-marital activities, it seems like a straightforward payday. Unfortunately, it quickly becomes apparent that the Mayor is not at all what he seems, and for Billy to achieve redemption, he will have to risk everything — possibly even his freedom.
