Brittany Allen Signs Up for Defiance

Syfy LogoBrittany Allen (All My Children) has joined the cast of Syfy’s Defiance, a new series currently shooting in Toronto. Allen joins Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Stephanie Leonidas, Tony Curran, Jaime Murray, Graham Greene, Mia Kirshner and Fionnula Flanagan in the groundbreaking series which will debut in April 2013. Allen’s screen credits include The Rocker and the upcoming releases Dead Before Dawn 3D, Backgammon, and the Canadian miniseries Bomb Girls.

Defiance marks the first time a series and a Massive Multiplayer Online game have had interconnected worlds and storylines that “co-exist throughout a scripted drama series and a multiplatform MMO shooter.”

The Plot:

Set in the near future, Defiance introduces an exotically transformed planet Earth, its landscapes permanently altered following the sudden – and tumultuous – arrival of seven unique alien races. In this somewhat unknown and unpredictable landscape, the richly diverse, newly-formed civilization of humans and aliens must learn to co-exist peacefully. Each week, viewers will follow an immersive character drama set in the boom-town of Defiance, which sits atop the ruins of St. Louis, MO, while in the game, players will adventure in the new frontier of the San Francisco Bay area. The dramatic tapestry of the series and the intense action of the game will exist in a single universe where their respective narratives will inform one another and evolve together into one overall story.

Allen will play Tirra, a troubled employee of the town madam, Kenya (Mia Kirshner). When she and Kenya are abducted as a result of Tirra’s dangerous inclinations, the two build an unlikely bond as they are launched into a terrifying fight for survival in alien badlands.

Treme Kicks Off Season 3 in September

Treme Season 3 PosterHBO’s Treme returns for a 10 episode season three beginning September 23rd at 10pm PT/ET. Says series creator David Simon: “We’ve committed ourselves to documenting post-Katrina New Orleans in a way that takes relatively few liberties with what was actually at stake. These are not mayors or police chiefs or gangsters battling for the future of their society. These characters are ordinary people – musicians, laborers, bar owners, fishermen, cooks – who couldn’t bear to walk away from what they understood to be great about their city. Their only weapon was the culture of New Orleans – its music, its food, its traditions, its street life. That’s what has brought the city back to the extent that it has returned.”

The ensemble cast of Treme includes Wendell Pierce as Antoine Batiste, Khandi Alexander as LaDonna Batiste-Williams, Clarke Peters as Albert Lambreaux, Rob Brown as Delmond Lambreaux, Steve Zahn as Davis McAlary, Kim Dickens as Janette Desautel, Melissa Leo as Toni Bernette, Lucia Micarelli as Annie Tee, Michiel Huisman as Sonny, David Morse as Terry Colson, Jon Seda as Nelson Hidalgo, India Ennenga as Sofia Bernette, and new cast member Chris Coy as L.P. Everett.

The Plot:

First, the people came back. Then, the crime. Now, more than two years after the near death of a great city, the money is starting to arrive, which would sound like a solution if this were some place other than New Orleans, and this was some other era but America at the millennium.

For the people of New Orleans, even the promises of redevelopment come with strings attached, and every dollar that shows up – whether from government disaster relief, or from venture capital, or even from those seeking to remake New Orleans in the wake of Katrina – carries with it new dynamics and new risks. National interest has waned, moving on to the next headline, but those who know and love the Crescent City have no choice. They must find their way back to what matters in the life of their city. However, little of what they can bring to bear yields a quick result, and nothing about New Orleans – its government, its police department and courtrooms, its school system – works as it should. Nothing is easy.

In the end, their only weapons are community. And culture.

Glee Warns Drivers Against Texting

“Stop the Texts. Stop the Wrecks.”

20th Century Fox, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the State Attorneys General and Consumer Protection Agencies, and the Ad Council teamed up on a series of public service advertisements (PSAs) featuring scenes from Glee season three. The PSAs are aimed at educating young adult drivers about the dangers of texting.

Last season, Quinn (Dianna Agron) was injured in a car crash on the way to Rachel and Finn’s wedding because she took her eyes off the road to respond to a text. That scene is featured in the PSAs as it helps illustrate the horrible consequences of texting and driving. The new PSAs also point people to the Texting and Driving Prevention campaign web site, StopTextsStopWrecks.org, for tips on how to curb the dangerous behavior.

Texting Facts

According to NHTSA, in 2010 3,000+ people were killed and an additional 416,000 were injured “due to distracted driving, which includes texting while driving.”

“Texting and driving is an epidemic on America’s roadways, but these crashes are preventable. Distracted driving does not just happen, it’s a choice,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “The first line of defense must be personal responsibility by all drivers to put theirwireless devices away and keep their focus on the road, which is why we are working closely with our partners to build public awareness around this important safety issue.”

“This was a story we wanted to tell because we know the influence our show can have in starting conversations and raising awareness,” stated Glee executive producer and co-creator Ryan Murphy. “We were inspired by Oprah Winfrey’s campaign encouraging everyone to sign a pledge not to text and drive, which we all signed when we did her show a few yearsago, and we had been looking for an opportunity to tell the story of how a few seconds of carelessness could have a devastating impact on people’s lives. We’ve already heard from thousands of our fans how this story touched them, and we loved the idea of a PSA campaign to keep this important issue front and center.”

Glee has always told stories that speak to young people in an incredibly entertaining way, provoking conversation and raising awareness in the process,” said Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen of Twentieth Century Fox Television. “When Ryan and the producers told us they were going to tackle this issue, we knew that beyond telling agreat, dramatic story about our characters, it could have very real impact on the lives of our viewers. We couldn’t be more proud of the work they and the cast have done on this incredible series.”

One Direction Announces New Single

One Direction has announced they’ll be releasing a new single off their upcoming album on October 1, 2012. The new single, “Live While We’re Young,” was written by Savan Kotecha, Rami Yacoub, and Carl Falk and comes out in advance of their second album’s release set for this November.

The British boy band featuring Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson came together on the 2010 The X Factor and took the top spot on the charts with the single “What Makes You Beautiful” in September 2011. Since their debut album Up All Night‘s release in November 2011, One Direction has sold over 12 million records.

Up All Night made it to #1 in 17 countries and earned the group the honor of being the first UK band to debut in first place on the Billboard album chart with their first album.

One Direction will set out on a sold-out world tour next spring, beginning with nine shows at London’s O2 Arena.

First Look: ‘Passion’ Trailer

Brian De Palma’s erotic thriller Passion is set to screen at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals, and the Toronto festival’s just unveiled this trailer in advance of the screenings. De Palma adapted the film from the 2010 French film, Love Crime, and directs.

Passion stars Rachel McAdams, Noomi Rapace, Karoline Herfurth, and Paul Anderson.

The Plot [Courtesy of the Venice Film Festival]:

Brian De Palma’s Passion tells the story of a deadly power struggle between two women in the dog-eat-dog world of international business. Christine possesses the natural elegance and casual ease associated with one who has a healthy relationship with money and power. Innocent, lovely and easily exploited, her admiring protégée Isabelle is full of cutting edge ideas that Christine has no qualms about stealing. They’re on the same team, after all…

Christine takes pleasure in exercising control over the younger woman, leading her one step at a time ever deeper into a game of seduction and manipulation, dominance and humiliation. But when Isabelle falls into bed with one of Christine’s lovers, war breaks out. On the night of the murder, Isabelle is at the ballet, while Christine receives an invitation to seduction. From whom? Christine loves surprises. Naked, she goes to meet the mystery lover waiting in her bedroom…

New 60 Second Trailer from ‘Dredd’

Karl Urban’s handsome face will remain covered by a helmet throughout Dredd 3D, but he wouldn’t have taken the part of Judge Dredd had it not stayed that faithful to the source material. While Urban fans may not appreciate the fact we don’t actually get to see his face, Urban’s 100% behind the choice.

Coming to theaters on September 21, 2012, Dredd also stars Lena Headey and Olivia Thirlby. Check out the new trailer just released by Lionsgate Films.

The Plot: The future America is an irradiated wasteland. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

In season two, Nucky married Margaret Schroeder to prevent her from testifying in court and took revenge on Jimmy Darmody for his role in a plot against him. But his hopes for smooth sailing were derailed when she signed away his highway windfall to the church. Meanwhile, agent Van Alden fled to Illinois to escape the feds with baby and nanny in tow.

While hosting a New Year’s Eve party for 1922-23, Nucky makes a resolution that does not sit well with Gyp Rosetti, a touchy gangster with a thirst for bootleg whiskey. Margaret looks to build on the Thompson endowment at St. Theresa’s Hospital, to her husband’s displeasure. In the absence of Jimmy and the Commodore, Gillian builds a new business while monitoring Richard’s mentoring of her “son,” Tommy. In Chicago, Al Capone is rankled by Irish mobster Dean O’Banion, and Van Alden stumbles onto a confrontation that could change his career path.

Mixing business with pleasure in New York, Nucky bristles at the collection tactics of Gaston Means, a “special investigator” with ties to Attorney General Harry Daugherty. At St. Theresa’s, Margaret is troubled when her altruism is met with resistance by both a patient and an idealistic doctor. Gyp extends his stopover in Tabor Heights, a town halfway between Atlantic City and New York, with an eye towards establishing a strategic foothold. Chalky and his daughter Maybelle (Christina Jackson) fail to agree on her future with Samuel (Ty Michael Robinson); Eli gets a new boss and faces new realities at home; a major liquor shipment takes an unexpected detour.

Disturbed by a recent nightmare and Billie’s absence, Nucky reluctantly joins Margaret to receive a high honor from the Church. Meanwhile, Gyp makes a deal with Nucky for a onetime liquor shipment, though the mobster’s longtime intentions remain very much up in the air. Van Alden regrets trying to socialize with his co-workers; Margaret takes her women’s-clinic pitch to a higher authority; Lucky and Meyer (Anatol Yusef) protect their investments; Richard sets the record straight with Mickey, and with Nucky.
