Christopher Reeve, Marlon Brando Superman Costumes Up for Auction

Superman Costume
Profiles in History’s July Hollywood Auction will include Superman: The Movie costumes worn by Christopher Reeve and Marlon Brando. Set for the July 20th weekend in Los Angeles, the complete Superman costume worn by Christopher Reeve as well as Brando’s Jor-El costume will be up for sale to the highest bidder as part of the Dreier Collection, “a collection of such breadth and immensity that it will take several years to completely auction off.”

The Superman and Jor-El costumes are expected to go for a minimum of $60,000 each.

Also included as part of the July auction is the screen-used Kryptonite crystal and box from Superman III. 12 inches long by 6 inches tall, this prop “can be positively screen-matched to the scene where Christopher Reeve is shown cradling the piece in his hands, as a small imperfection on one edge is clearly visible.” The prop is expected to fetch $8,000 – $12,000.

The Details:

The Superman Costume: A long sleeve leotard of blue and red stretch jersey, a chest emblazoned with the trademark Superman “S” and an interior Bermans & Nathans label typed “Christopher Reeves [sic] 12186 Superman.” A pair of matching blue stretch nylon tights with interior Bermans & Nathans label typed “Christopher Reeve Colour A 18629,” a yellow-painted leather belt, a long flowing cape of scarlet wool with padded shoulders and interior bias label handwritten “C. Reeve Colour B Walking,” the back having a yellow Superman “S” logo with black stitched borders, and a pair of knee-length red leather boots with zipper closures, each boot with Bermans & Nathans labels typed “Christopher Reeves [sic] 12188” and handwritten “Waterproof.”

The Superman Costume’s History: The costume was originally acquired by a sub-contractor who worked as a set decorator and a special effects flying/rigging technician on the first two Superman films at Pinewood studios in London. Its ownership was later transferred to a make-up artist in Nashville, TN, whose letter of provenance will accompany this fantastic costume. Studio labeled throughout, this costume is without question, the finest original Christopher Reeve Superman costume Profiles in History has ever encountered. Easily one of the most recognizable costumes in Hollywood history, it is the most important complete costume from this landmark film ever brought to public auction.

The Jor-El Costume: The costume consists of a tunic with the iconic “S” insignia with faux jewel detailing, sleeveless full-length robe with faux jewel detailing on the shoulders, pants and boots. The entire costume is layered with a luminous silver/gray reflective material, which appears to glow when subjected to strong light. This ingenious costume effect was first innovated in this production and used on all of the inhabitants of the planet Krypton providing a fantastic otherworldly appearance. Tunic, robe and boots have Bermans and Nathans labels typewritten “Marlon Brando Superman.”

Andy Samberg confirmed to The New York Times that he will not be returning for the 2012-2013 season of Saturday Night Live. Samberg, one of the founders of the digital shorts company Lonely Island, will be using his new free time to concentrate on feature films.

“It’s an incredibly emotional and strange moment in my life,” said Samberg in an interview with NYT. “Obviously it’s not a huge shock, but I did officially decide not to come back.”

Samberg, who joined the show in 2005, is following in the footsteps of Kristen Wiig who said an emotional goodbye to the show on last season’s final episode. The other long-time cast member who could be leaving is Jason Sudeikis, however neither he nor NBC have confirmed his status.

After talking it over with Wiig, Samberg felt the time was right to step away from SNL. “Something about it just feels like it’s the moment,” said the 33 year old comedian. “My contract’s up and I did so much more than I ever thought I would ever even do.”

Samberg will be seen on the big screen opposite ex-Saturday Night Live player Adam Sandler in That’s My Boy, opening June 15th.

Setting up Lucasfilm Ltd. to continue once he’s retired, George Lucas has named Kathleen Kennedy Co-Chair of Lucasfilm. Lucas will guide Kennedy into her new role, continuing as CEO will also transitioning into the position Co-Chairman of the Board. Micheline Chau remains in place as President and COO of Lucasfilm.

“I’ve spent my life building Lucasfilm and as I shift my focus into other directions I wanted to make sure it was in the hands of someone equipped to carry my vision into the future,” stated George Lucas in the official press release. “It was important that my successor not only be someone with great creative passion and proven leadership abilities, but also someone who loves movies. I care deeply about my employees—it is their creativity and hard work that has made this company what it is today. As the company grows and expands I wanted to be sure the employees of Lucasfilm have a strong captain for the ship. I also care deeply about our fans and it was important to have someone who would carry on the passion and care that I’ve given the films over the years. So for me Kathy was the obvious choice, she is a trusted friend and one of the most respected producers and executives in the industry.”

Director Steven Spielberg said, “George’s prescience is once again proven by his choice of my long time producing partner, Kathy Kennedy to co-chair Lucasfilm. Kathy has been a member of both of our families going into a fourth decade so it does not feel like she is going to another galaxy far far away. She will get just as much support from me with Lucasfilm as George has given both of us all these years.”

“George is a true visionary,” said Kathleen Kennedy. “I’ve seen him build Lucasfilm from a small rebel unit in Northern California to an international fully integrated entertainment company. I’m excited to have the chance to work with such an extraordinary group of talented people. George and I have talked about the enormous opportunities that lie ahead for the company, and as George moves towards retirement I am honored that he trusts me with taking care of the beloved film franchises. I feel fortunate to have George working with me for the next year or two as I take on this role—it is nice to have Yoda by your side.”

Movie Review: ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’

Chris Hemsworth and Kristen Stewart in Snow White and the Huntsman

After the terrible Mirror Mirror debacle that sullied movie screens earlier this year, the thought of another Snow White adaptation induced more fatigue than anything else. Seeing the trailers for Snow White and the Huntsman, I was slightly hopeful as the visuals looked great and the majority of the cast makes a lot of sense.

But there is of course the proverbial elephant in the room: Kristen Stewart.

Potential audience members not caught in the grip of Twilight fever are no doubt worried about the actress’ inclusion, wondering if no amount of cinematic wizardry could make up for placing Bella Swan in the middle of such a beloved tale. Aside from her very early work and some independent features, there isn’t much I could think of to assuage those doubts. Thankfully, it appears the director and screenwriters felt the same way and aside from one key speech (which is so corny it evokes Braveheart, Independence Day and Street Fighter), Stewart’s dialogue is largely limited to a few sentences at a time.

Her character is imbued with an accent of sorts, not quite British, not quite Old English. This helps reduce the normally whiny quality and neurotic delivery of her voice; and when Stewart isn’t suffering from Ben Affleck disease (close your mouth if you’re not talking), she possesses the right kind of beauty for the role. Giving her such a prominent role in the final battle, decked in chain mail no less, it’s a wonder they didn’t call the film Joan of Arc and the Huntsman, but that’s probably the cynic in me more than anything else.

Really, the biggest problems stem from the score and trying to tackle so many plot points. Composed by James Newton Howard, the music is completely overdramatic and loud for the sake of being loud. The middle section of the film is less plagued by these distractions but it’s too bad the approach wasn’t far more subtle as some of the themes were lovely in concept but too boisterous in execution. As for the plot points, you have the evil Queen’s back story, Snow White’s back story, the Huntsman’s back story, a quasi love-triangle, the Queen’s brother, the dwarves, fairies, the dark forest, and the fairy tale itself. Sure, at a touch over two hours there is some time to address these points, but eliminating any one, or more, of these elements would have allowed for better development of everything else (I vote to lose the childhood friend/love interest of Snow and the community of women who scar themselves so as not to offend the Queen).

On the bright side, the amount of work that went into creating the illusion that the full size actors were dwarves was well spent. While it deprives excellent little people from grabbing those roles, seeing the likes of Nick Frost, Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone and Toby Jones as dwarves was a delight. They pick up the energy level of the production as it heads into the last quarter of the film. It would have been nice to see more done with them but going back to my major complaint, there were just too many story arcs being attempted to allow this to happen.

Chris Hemsworth does a decent enough job of finding a middle ground between the tough jock from The Cabin in the Woods and Thor. The little girl playing a young Kristen Stewart was engaging and Charlize Theron dove headfirst into her role. There are a few shades of gray to her wickedness and she was able to capture them without eliciting disbelief. The effects done to age her and illustrate the magic of the film were all handled quite well, and the production design team should also be commended for top notch work. A number of elements seem culled from other works (my favorite/most baffling being the likeness of the fairies to the little creatures in Galaxy Quest that aren’t so cute when they show their teeth) but it wasn’t until analyzing and discussing the film afterwards that most of these homages/references/imitations came to light.

While tightening up the script (and recasting Snow White) probably could have catapulted this to real critical acclaim, the bottom line is that Snow White and the Huntsman is an entertaining film. It’s too dark and deals with themes not appropriate for little kids (show them the Disney cartoon, not Mirror Mirror) but for teenagers on up, this is the first summer movie since The Avengers that actually could qualify as worth the price of admission if the subject material looks interesting to you. Not since Sigourney Weaver’s darker take on the tale has anything interesting enough been done to deserve mentioning and maybe, just maybe, it’s a sign Kristen Stewart won’t just be Bella Swan for the rest of her career. Maybe.

GRADE: B+

Snow White and the Huntsman hits theaters on June 1, 2012 and is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, and brief sensuality.
