David Cronenberg to Guest Star on Rewind

The cast of Syfy’s action thriller Rewind has increased by a handful. Joining the 90 minute pilot are Keisha Castle-Hughes, Jennifer Ferrin, Robbie Jones and Keon Mohajeri, with award-winning director David Cronenberg set to guest star. In addition, Jeff Fahey has signed up for a guest starring role in the pilot.

Jack Bender (Lost, Alphas) will direct the pilot from a script by Justin Marks.

Production is currently underway in Toronto.

The Plot and Cast Details [Courtesy of Syfy]:

Rewind revolves around a team of military field operatives and civilian scientists who must use untested technology to travel back in time to alter past events in order to change the future and avoid a devastating terrorist attack.

Castle-Hughes will portray Priya, the team’s atypical historian, a behavioral anthropologist who provides analytical context to the project and the missions, and whose knowledge of history extends beyond the boundaries of facts.

Bryce, a brilliant scientist who graduated from MIT when she was 18; the smartest person in the room who is obsessive, driven and doesn’t really care what people think of her, will be played by Jennifer Ferrin.

Jones plays Danny, Henry Knox’s (Shane McRae) friend and the man Knox trusts most to help him get the job done as they embark on their perilous mission into the past. As Charlie, Mohajeri portrays a mathematician who has patented an innovative piece of technology that can reduce history to mathematics, in order to measure the team’s action in the past.

Guest star David Cronenberg will play a brilliant pillar of science and Nobel Prize winner who has become unhinged since the death of his wife years ago. He prepares a dangerous plot that will alter the course of history.

Guest star Jeff Fahey plays Ellis, a former NASA aerospace engineer and now part of Bryce’s time travel team. He is the spiritual backbone of the team; strong with a Zen-like wisdom and intensely loyal to Bryce.

The previously announced Shane McRae will portray Sean Knox, ex-Special Forces who ranks as a field operative in a special division of the Department of Homeland Security. A self-aware, wry, clever and razor-sharp strategic mind, Knox likes to be underestimated. Now, Knox has been recruited for a nearly impossible top-secret mission: to travel back in time to prevent a devastating terrorist attack.

20th Century Fox’s red band trailer arrives for the R-rated comedy movie, The Watch (formerly known as Neighborhood Watch). The alien invasion comedy stars Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade and was directed by Akiva Schaffer.

Jared Stern, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Justin Theroux wrote the script.

The Watch hits theaters on July 27, 2012.

In releasing the red band trailer, Fox also released a statement on the film’s new title: “As the subject matter of this alien invasion comedy bears no relation whatsoever to the recent tragic events in Florida, the studio altered the title to avoid any accidental or unintended misimpression that it might.”

Bree Williamson (Gossip Girl) has signed on to the cast of Haven for season #3. Williamson will play a psychiatrist named Dr. Claire Callahan.

Per Syfy: “In her new role, Dr. Callahan becomes a close friend and confidant to Audrey Parker (Emily Rose). She also uses her skills to help ‘profile’ potential perpetrators and, as a psychiatrist, to help the troubled citizens of Haven deal with their afflictions.

Season three of Haven picks up immediately following the events of the gripping season two finale with Audrey having been brutally kidnapped; Nathan (Lucas Bryan) warned against pursuing a romantic relationship with Audrey; and Duke (Eric Balfour) seemingly engaged in a fight to the death with Nathan after he discovers his family lineage is to kill Haven citizens with troubles.”

Each of the final five contestants impressed the judges, and with a season-high of 60 million votes cast they also apparently impressed the TV audience. But one had to leave and once all the votes were tabulated, it was Country singer Skylar Laine who wound up eliminated this week.

The final four finalists – Hollie Cavanagh, Joshua Ledet, Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez – will next try to win over voters on Wednesday, May 9th, during a “California Dreamin'”-themed show. The top three, who will be revealed on Thursday, May 10th, will then get to head back to their hometowns to visit with family, friends, and fans.

Also on May 10th, American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez will be performing “Dance Again” on the show and AI season seven winner David Cook will take the stage to perform “The Last Song I’ll Write for You.”

Film Review: The Avengers

Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans in The Avengers

Reviewed by Kevin Finnerty

“I thought I didn’t qualify. Apparently I’m…what was it? Volatile, self-obsessed, and don’t play well with others,” says Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) to Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) who’s at Stark Tower to convince Iron Man to join other superheroes in a fight to protect Earth from an invasion in the highly anticipated film, The Avengers.

Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Director of S.H.I.E.L.D (a secret government peacekeeping agency), has sent Agent Coulson along with super spy/assassin Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) out to find and bring back both Mr. Stark and Dr. Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) who turns into the huge, mighty, raging, green Hulk when he becomes angry; to team up with Steve Rogers – Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow, super assassin Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and, hopefully, the mighty demigod Thor (Chris Hemsworth) to form The Avengers. The reason behind the need to assemble a super fighting team: Thor’s adopted brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), has stolen a power cube called the Tesseract and intends to use it to open a portal to allow a fierce alien army to wage war on Earth and enslave all humans to obey Loki. But before the new team of superheroes can have any real chance of finding a way to stop Loki, they MUST put their egos and personality clashes aside and find a way to work together if Earth is going to have any hope of surviving.

Thrilling and fun, The Avengers is a fast-paced, action-packed event movie which will have the audience cheering and applauding in their seats. It has a strong cast with some stand-out performances led by Robert Downey Jr., reprising his role as Tony Stark, whose very presence on screen elevates the film to a whole new level and energizes the rest of the cast. Mark Ruffalo is hands-down the best to portray Bruce Banner since Bill Bixby played the role on the small screen in the 1970s. Both Downey Jr. and Ruffalo have solid chemistry in the scenes where Stark and Banner begin to become friends and Tony encourages Bruce not to fear his alter green ego but embrace him instead.

Scarlett Johansson is perfect as Black Widow, the cold, tough master spy who’s not all ice around the edges but actually cares deeply for her teammates – and at times even shows a little chink in her armor. The scene where she tries to persuade Banner to come in from the cold is both tense, humorous and surprising.

The film also has breathtaking action sequences, great CGI, and the best superhero fight in a downtown city since Superman (Christopher Reeve) fought General Zod (Terence Stamp) and his comrades in the film Superman 2.

The only problem with the film is a few scenes that drag on a little too long and really do slam on the brakes of what is one of the best action films to come along in years.

Exhilarating and surprising, The Avengers is a star-powered, full-throttle action blockbuster that’s sure to surpass moviegoers’ expectations.

GRADE: B+

The Avengers hits theaters on May 4, 2012 and is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action throughout, and a mild drug reference.

Official Synopsis: In the year 1750, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from England to start a new life in America, where they build a fishing empire in the coastal Maine town that comes to carry their name: Collinsport. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of falling in love with a beauty named Josette DuPres (Bella Heathcote) and breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death—turning him into a vampire, and then burying him…alive.

Nearly two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972, a stranger in an even stranger time. Returning to Collinwood Manor, he finds that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin, and the dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets.

Family matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) is the one person Barnabas entrusts with the truth of his identity. But his rather odd and anachronistic behavior immediately raises the suspicions of the live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), who has no idea what kind of problems she’s really digging up.

As Barnabas sets out to restore his family name to its former glory, one thing stands in his way: Collinsport’s leading denizen, who goes by the name Angie…and who bears a striking resemblance to a very old acquaintance of Barnabas Collins.

Also residing in Collinwood Manor are Elizabeth’s ne’er-do-well brother, Roger Collins, (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloë Grace Moretz); and Roger’s precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gully McGrath). The longsuffering caretaker of Collinwood is Willie Loomis (Jackie Earle Haley), and new to the Collins’ employ is David’s nanny, Victoria Winters (Bella Heathcote), who is, mysteriously, the mirror image of Barnabas’ one true love, Josette.

Prom can be a real hellish experience…

Insurge Pictures has just unleashed a new trailer for the horror film, The Loved Ones, and it’s just crazy. Written and directed by Sean Byrne, The Loved Ones stars Robin McLeavy, Xavier Samuel, and Victoria Thaine.

The Plot:

Lola Stone asked Brent Mitchell to the prom, but Brent said no, and now he’s screwed. What happens when Lola doesn’t get what she wants? She enlists Daddy’s help to throw a prom of her own where she is queen and Brent is king, whether he likes it or not. The Loved Ones is what happens when puppy love goes horribly, violently wrong. Brent should have said yes.

Genre fans were able to sign up to have The Loved Ones screened in their city, and Paramount’s Insurge Pictures has announced the first six cities that will be screening the film beginning on June 1st – San Francisco, Austin, Chicago, New York, Houston, and Los Angeles.
