Film Review: ‘Mirror Mirror’

Lily Collins in Mirror Mirror

Mirror Mirror is a confusing movie. The marketing can’t stop saying what a great family film this is. And yet, it’s directed by Tarsem Singh, whose previous films are Immortals, The Fall, and The Cell. It casts Julia Roberts in a role that requires her to be evil … but it’s Julia Roberts so that only goes so far. And it may have beaten Snow White and the Huntsmen to a release date, but it carries no real sense of freshness outside of Singh’s visuals.

Huh. That’s pretty much the review in a nutshell.

Attempting to make this more than a one-paragraph review, I’m sure there are plenty of people who will find some charm in this, as the dwarfs are a fun bunch (though the renaming of them in order to de-Disneyfy things felt like a 6-year old chose things). Armie Hammer does an okay job of playing a slightly vain Prince who learns that Snow White isn’t quite the helpless damsel he’s used to saving. And Lily Collins exudes sweetness and bears an uncanny likeness to Audrey Hepburn.

Still, the whole affair is rather bland, and there isn’t much point in dissecting things any further. The only elements of life are the darker touches Singh injects, but they’re at odds with the overall attempt to make this a family-friendly film. This isn’t the train wreck I had been expecting but if I want a live-action fairy tale, I’ll toss Enchanted into my Blu-ray player. Mirror Mirror hit all the familiar marks, and Singh attempted to add his spin on things but that style works better when you’re not worried about the pre-teen set.

Here’s hoping Kristen Stewart doesn’t wreck the next Snow White movie, which looks to be a far more interesting take on this tale.

GRADE: C

Mirror Mirror hits theaters on March 30, 2012 and is rated PG for some fantasy action and mild rude humor.

Spotlight On: ‘That’s My Boy’ Trailer

Some people still find Adam Sandler funny, although judging by the box office take of Jack & Jill not as many people are buying into his brand of comedy now as did back in the late ’90s and early 2000s. But – and I say this based solely on the reaction to the trailer by Sandler fans – his new film That’s My Boy actually looks like it could be fairly funny.

Heading to theaters on June 15th, That’s My Boy finds Sandler playing Andy Samberg’s dad.

The Plot:

While still in his teens, Donny (Adam Sandler) fathered a son, Todd (Andy Samberg), and raised him as a single parent up until Todd’s 18th birthday. Now, after not seeing each other for years, Todd’s world comes crashing down on the eve of his wedding when an uninvited Donny suddenly shows up. Trying desperately to reconnect with his son, Donny is now forced to deal with the repercussions of his bad parenting skills.

‘People Like Us’ First Trailer Starring Chris Pine

DreamWorks Pictures has released the first trailer for the comedy/drama People Like Us (formerly known as Welcome to People) starring Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks, Michael D’Addario, Olivia Wilde, Mark Duplass, and Michelle Pfeiffer. Set for a June 29th release, People Like Us marks the directorial debut of Star Trek and Transformers screenwriter Alex Kurtzman, who also wrote the script with Roberto Orci and Jody Lambert.

The Plot:

From DreamWorks Pictures comes “People Like Us,” a drama/comedy about family, inspired by true events, starring Chris Pine (“Star Trek”) as Sam, a twenty-something, fast-talking salesman, whose latest deal collapses on the day he learns that his father has suddenly died. Against his wishes, Sam is called home, where he must put his father’s estate in order and reconnect with his estranged family.

In the course of fulfilling his father’s last wishes, Sam uncovers a startling secret that turns his entire world upside down: He has a 30-year-old sister Frankie whom he never knew about (Elizabeth Banks). As their relationship develops, Sam is forced to rethink everything he thought he knew about this family — and re-examine his own life choices in the process.

Sony Pictures is releasing the action thriller Total Recall starring Colin Farrell (Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in the 1990 version) in theaters on August 3, 2012, and in support of the upcoming release, they’ve released a motion poster and a teaser trailer that teases the first real trailer.

Based on the short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick, this Total Recall also features Kate Beckinsale, Bryan Cranston, Bill Nighy, and Jessica Biel, and was directed by Beckinsale’s husband, Len Wiseman.

The Plot: Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Farrell), even though he’s got a beautiful wife (Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life – real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man.

Finding himself on the run from the police – controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Cranston), the leader of the free world – Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.
