So, what do you think of AnnaSophia Robb as the young Carrie Bradshaw in The Carrie Diaries? The CW is hoping you buy into her being the younger version of the character created by Candace Bushnell and played by Sarah Jessica Parker in the HBO Sex and the City series and feature films. She’s definitely cute and has a fan following, but she doesn’t resemble Parker (even in her younger years) which probably doesn’t really matter.

Amy B Harris, The Carrie Diaries executive producer and former Sex and the City associate producer, explained why Robb is right for the role. “Having been a part of the Sex and the City series, I felt such an honor and responsibility to the fans of the show to find someone who embodied the spirit of Manhattan’s favorite ‘It’ girl. When AnnaSophia Robb walked into the room, we knew we had found her. Her grace, intelligence, sense of fun and her empathetic nature make her the perfect girl to bring our young Carrie to life. The fact that she loves a gorgeous pair of heels doesn’t hurt either.”

The Carrie Diaries is set in the 1980s and is a coming-of-age story following a teenage Carrie Bradshaw as she learns to think for herself.

The Plot: Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the evil Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

The Hunger Games hits theaters on March 23, 2012.

‘Salmon Fishing in the Yemen’ Movie Review

Emily Blunt and Ewan McGregor star in Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

“This thing is a bloody joke,” says Dr. Alfred Jones (Ewan McGregor), a fisheries expert who’s been approached by consultant Harriet Chetworth (Emily Blunt) to help a very wealthy Sheik (Amr Waked) bring his favorite sport, fly-fishing, to the desert in the romantic film Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.

Even though the whole idea seems absurd, when the Prime Minister’s press secretary needs a light-hearted “goodwill” project to take focus away from the increase in violence in the Middle East, Dr. Jones finds himself being forced to work with the always optimistic and lovely Harriet on making the Sheik’s dream a possible reality. Working closely together and traveling all the way to the Sheik’s home in Yemen to provide an update and check out the possible areas to drop the fish for breeding, Alfred and Harriet slowly begin to believe in making the impossible possible while also slowly starting to fall hard for each other.

Charming and funny, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is a romantic comedy/drama that has an original, quirky script and two delightful performances by Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt. Both McGregor as the no-sense, at times downright rude Dr. Jones and Blunt as the smart, flirty Harriet have wonderful chemistry together. When Harriet receives some awful news, it falls to Alfred to comfort her and help her find the determination to continue on with their project. It’s a very sweet, awkward, and realistic scene.

Kristin Scott Thomas is perfectly cast as the overzealous press secretary to the Prime Minister who provides many of the laugh-out-loud moments in the film.

Reminiscent of the oddball romantic comedies of old Hollywood, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is a sweet, endearing and enjoyable film that will have the audience smiling and chuckling as they leave the movie theater.

GRADE: B-

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen was directed by Lasse Hallström and is rated PG-13 for some violence and sexual content, and brief language.

The Plot:

Mirror Mirror is a reimagining of the classic fairy tale starring Julia Roberts as the Queen, Lily Collins as Snow White, Armie Hammer as Prince Alcott, Sean Bean as the King and Nathan Lane as the Queen’s hapless and bungling servant, Brighton. An evil queen steals control of a kingdom and an exiled princess enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright in a spirited adventure comedy filled with jealousy, romance and betrayal that will capture the imagination of audiences the world over.

Visionary director Tarsem Singh rewrites fairy tale history as a wicked enchantress (Roberts) schemes and scrambles for control of a spirited orphan’s (Collins) throne and the attention of a charming prince (Hammer). When Snow White’s beauty wins the heart of the prince that she desperately pursues, the Queen banishes her to the forest, where a ravening man-eating beast hungrily awaits.

Rescued by a band of diminutive highway robbers, Snow White grows into an indomitable young woman determined to take back her realm from the treacherous Queen. With the support of her subjects, she roars into action in an epic battle that blends spectacle, magic and contemporary humor in Singh’s signature, jaw-dropping visual style.
