’16 and Pregnant’ Season 4 Preview

16 and Pregnant

MTV’s set to launch season four of 16 and Pregnant on March 27, 2012. The one-hour documentary series follows teenagers as they handle being pregnant at such a young age.

What You Need to Know:

16 and Pregnant is a reality/documentary series about teenagers who become pregnant while still in high school, showcasing their struggles with pregnancy and what it’s like to become a teen mom. Some of the girls have the support of their families while others have no one to turn to except for their boyfriends and boyfriends’ families. It also shows teens struggling with the decision to give their child up for adoption in hopes of a better life and future for them, knowing they can’t give them that.

Some struggle just to graduate on time, while others drop out in hopes of getting their GEDs. Most of the girls on this show are either on-again/off-again with their baby’s daddy or they quickly become single moms due to the other parent becoming a ‘deadbeat dad’. Fortunately, some of the teen parents are still together.

The first season did so well that MTV came out with a spin-off – Teen Mom – in which they follow around some of the 16 & Pregnant girls and continue to show their struggles.

There’s been a lot of backlash about this show, with many people of the opinion it glorifies teen pregnancy. However, during the show, MTV does have an advertisement on how to learn about preventing teen pregnancy. But regardless of the controversial subject matter, 16 and Pregnant draws in big ratings – people just can’t seem to get enough of these shows.

Soul Asylum ‘Delayed Reaction’ Album Details

Soul Asylum Delayed Reaction
Soul Asylum ‘Delayed Reaction’

Soul Asylum will release Delayed Reaction on July 17th, marking their first new album in six years. The band, which recently signed with 429 Records, will also be touring in support of Delayed Reaction (although no tour dates have been announced).

This incarnation of the band features founders Dave Pirner and Dan Murphy with ex-Replacements, ex-Guns N’ Roses bassist Tommy Stinson (who replaced original member Karl Mueller who passed away in 2006), and former Prince drummer Michael Bland.

Talking about the recording process, Dave Pirner said, “It feels like approaching it as an album and a thing that has a sequence, and a thing that is a piece of work in itself is almost an archaic process… Honestly, it’s more organic. Even though you’re using some of this newer technology, the fact that you’re doing it yourself is what made it take so long and the process unique, this time.”

Delayed Reaction Track List:

1. Gravity
2. Into The Light
3. The Streets
4. By The Way
5. Pipe Dream
6. Let’s All Kill Each Other
7. Cruel Intentions
8. The Juice
9. Take Manhattan
10. I Should’ve Stayed In Bed

More on Soul Asylum [Courtesy of 429 Records]:

Originally formed in 1983 in Minneapolis, MN, Soul Asylum has maintained their reputation for honest, heartfelt rock from their beginnings on scrappy local label Twin Tone (which concurrently nurtured the careers of seminal rockers the Replacements), through their commercially successful days on A&M and Columbia Records (where they scored a Grammy for the monster hit single “Runaway Train”). The band has persevered through the good times of garnering several platinum albums and accolades including a performance for the Presidential inauguration of Bill Clinton to enduring the personal tragedy of losing Karl Mueller to cancer six years ago.

Bully to Be Released Unrated

The campaign to have the MPAA reconsider their decision to change Bully‘s rating from an R to a less restrictive PG-13 hasn’t made the group budge – yet – so The Weinstein Company has opted to release the documentary film without a rating. The MPAA’s most recent vote came up one short, and TWC decided they have no real choice other than to move forward without a rating. Bully earned its R rating for language.

“While it’s often heartbreaking and deals with tough issues like suicide, the movie addresses bullying in a frank and relatable way that is age appropriate for teens and relevant for middle schoolers if an adult is present to guide the discussion,” stated James P. Steyer, Founder and CEO, Common Sense Media. “The MPAA’s ratings system is inadequate when it comes looking at a movie’s content through the lens of its larger thematic issues. Common Sense Media provides alternative ratings for parents who are looking for more guidance and context than the MPAA provides.”

Director Lee Hirsch added, “The small amount of language in the film that’s responsible for the R rating is there because it’s real. It’s what the children who are victims of bullying face on most days. All of our supporters see that, and we’re grateful for the support we’ve received across the board. I know the kids will come, so it’s up to the theaters to let them in.”

Michigan high school student Katy Butler’s (a victim of bullying) online petition at Change.org to have the rating reversed has gathered nearly half a million signatures, and has the backing of major names in the entertainment world as well as politicians. Commenting on the rating and the Butler’s campaign, TWC President of Marketing Stephen Bruno said, “The kids and families in this film are true heroes, and we believe theater owners everywhere will step up and do what’s right for the benefit of all of the children out there who have been bullied or may have otherwise become bullies themselves. We’re working to do everything we can to make this film available to as many parents, teachers and students across the country.”

Bully will hit theaters on March 30th.

The Story:

Bully is a beautifully cinematic, character-driven documentary. At its heart are those with huge stakes in this issue whose stories each represent a different facet of America’s bullying crisis. Filmed over the course of the 2009/2010 school year, Bully opens a window onto the pained and often endangered lives of bullied kids, revealing a problem that transcends geographic, racial, ethnic and economic borders. It documents the responses of teachers and administrators to aggressive behaviors that defy “kids will be kids” clichés, and it captures a growing movement among parents and youths to change how bullying is handled in schools, in communities and in society as a whole.
