New Artist Spotlight: DJ Miller

Even as a boy back in Idaville, Ind., DJ Miller was determined and focused in pursuit of his goal of becoming a Country performer. Whatever sparked it, Miller had a dream and he knew from the start he would spend his young years chasing it down.

Of course, plenty of kids aspire toward stardom. What made Miller stand out was his realization that attaining it meant taking charge of making it real. He hit on an important epiphany early, as he notes in his bio: “You can’t be the only one having fun. You have to interact with the crowd.” From studying Garth Brooks concert tapes and Brad Paisley in action to honing his shows at local clubs and state fairs, he learned quickly — and kept learning.

In 2009, producer Johnny Morris made Miller’s acquaintance and introduced him around in Nashville. Miller was already touring hard, but at that point he began building his schedule to allow time to write with the pros. The results can be heard on his debut album, Whatever It Takes, produced by Johnny Morris and featuring four of his co-writes among its 10 tracks.

Even more evident is his ability to put a song across with a style based on old-school Country. Fiddles and classic piano fills set the mood on his first two singles, “Whatever It Takes” (written by Brad Wolf, Don Goodman and Trini Triggs) and “Between Sundays” (Richard A. Alves, John Colgin, Gary Duffy and Reid Brannon). Both augment a vocal style that radiates authenticity and sincere emotion. Yes, you can hear the marks of Garth in his phrasing, but mainly you feel that excitement Miller cultivated onstage, abundant in his recording as well.

Chloë Grace Moretz is one of the best young actors in Hollywood and now she’s set to be recognized for her already impressive body of work. The National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) announced they’ll be honoring the hard-working actress at this year’s CinemaCon. Moretz has been named the “CinemaCon 2012 Female Star of Tomorrow” and will receive the award at this year’s “CinemaCon Big Screen Achievement Awards” ceremony to be held on April 26 at Caesars Palace.

Announcing the award, the convention’s managing director Mitch Neuhauser said, “With the poise and talent of a seasoned veteran, Chloë Grace Moretz has captivated the attention of the movie-going public since the age of five with an array of diverse and challenging movie roles. From the charming advice-giving sister in 500 Days of Summer to the take-no-prisoners don’t-mess-with-me attitude of Kick-Ass to her most recent role as the spirited, adventuresome and supportive friend in Hugo, she is truly a young force to be reckoned with. CinemaCon is so pleased to be able to recognize such a talented young lady, and we look forward to seeing her on the big screen for many years to come.”

TBS just announced two new comedy series will debut this summer. The buddy comedy Men at Work will premiere on May 24th at 10 pm (ET/PT), with Sullivan & Son starring Steve Byrne taking over that time spot on July 19th.

Danny Masterson, Michael Cassidy, Adam Busch and James Lesure star in Men at Work which was created by Franklin & Bash star Breckin Meyer. The plot: “Men at Work follows the misadventures of four buddies who work together at a magazine. Masterson plays the recently dumped Milo, whose friends are determined to help him get back in the game. Lesure is Gibbs, a photographer and successful ladies man. Cassidy plays Tyler, a features writer who brings a dose of style and sophistication to the group. And Busch is Neal, a somewhat nebbish reporter and the only one in the group with a steady girlfriend. Together, the four serve as each other’s wingmen as they navigate work, friendship and women.”

Vince Vaughn (The Break-Up) and Peter Billingsley (best known as the star of the classic holiday movie, A Christmas Story) executive produce Sullivan & Son. The plot: “Sullivan & Son takes place in a popular bar in a working-class Pittsburgh neighborhood. Filled with locals and regulars, the establishment known as Sullivan & Son serves as the unofficial “town hall” for the neighborhood. As the series opens, Steve Sullivan (Byrne) is a successful corporate attorney from New York who brings his girlfriend, Ashley (Brooke Lyons) for a visit just as his Irish-American father, Jack Sullivan (Dan Lauria), and Korean mother, Ok Cha (Jodi Long), are preparing to sell the bar and retire. Upon arrival, Steve reconnects with his best friend, Owen (Owen Benjamin); gets accosted by his long-suffering, under-appreciated younger sister, Susan (Vivian Bang); endures offensive comments from gruff barfly Hank (Brian Doyle Murray); and gets hit on by tipsy cougar Carol (Christine Ebersole). He even feels a rekindled romantic spark with his former sweetheart, Melanie (Valerie Azlynn).

It doesn’t take Steve long to realize that what he really wants out of life is to return to the old neighborhood and take over Sullivan & Son, even if it means giving up a lavish Manhattan lifestyle with the gorgeous Ashley. And so begins Steve’s quest for a more meaningful and rewarding life behind the bar.”

HBO Picks Up ‘The Central Park Effect’

The Central Park Effect

HBO’s going to the birds.

HBO Documentary Films has picked up The Central Park Effect directed by Jeffrey Kimball. The documentary just screened as part of the Documentary Feature Competition at SXSW and will air this summer on HBO.

The Story: The Central Park Effect reveals the extraordinary array of wild birds who grace Manhattan’s celebrated patch of green and the equally colorful New Yorkers who schedule their lives around the rhythms of migration. The film focuses on seven main subjects who regularly visit the park and have found a profound connection with this hidden natural world.

“HBO is the ideal home for The Central Park Effect and gives us the ability to tell an important story to millions of people,” states filmmaker Jeffrey Kimball. “Even though it’s set in the middle of New York City, this is a story about people’s connection to nature. It’s important for us to realize that as the world becomes more urbanized, nature doesn’t have to entirely disappear from cities.”
