“This is not a Democracy anymore,” says Rick (Andrew Lincoln) to the remaining survivors who have barely escaped a zombie attack on Hershel’s farm, or what used to be Hershel’s farm, in the finale of season 2 of the AMC cable channel’s hit series The Walking Dead.

While walking Carl (Chandler Riggs) back to the farm after killing Shane (Jon Bernthal) twice – first, when he was going to murder Rick and the second time when Shane rose from the ground as a zombie – Rick and Carl are shocked and horrified to see a herd of “walkers” heading straight for them and the farm. Meanwhile, Daryl (Norman Reedus), Glenn (Steven Yeun), Maggie (Lauren Cohan), Hershel (Scott Wilson), and the rest of the group back on the farm have also noticed the army of undead heading their way. Deciding the best defense is a good offense, the gang quickly formulates a plan to use the vehicles and their weapons and take the fight to the zombies before they actually get to the farmhouse.

It’s early during the attack on the farm that Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) realizes that Carl is not safely hiding upstairs but missing, and she frantically bothers everyone not engaged in the fight to search for her son. (Lori is unaware that Carl snuck out and caught up to Rick and is at this very moment hiding in the barn surrounded by hungry flesh-eaters.)

To escape the undead, Rick and Carl set the barn ablaze after letting a group of zombies in to go up in flames. They quickly head out of one of the 2nd level windows and use the RV to get down and head for cover.

Although Hershel, Daryl, Rick, Andrea (Laurie Holden), Glenn, and the rest of the group put up an admirable fight, they all quickly realize that there are far too many zombies for them to stop. Separated into different groups and one cut off and left behind (poor Andrea just can’t catch a break), everyone has to try to fight their way off the farm and back to the main highway in hopes of escaping the flesh-eaters, re-grouping, and surviving.

The Walking Dead season 2 finale, “Beside the Dying Fire,” concludes the horror/soap opera series with spine-tingling suspense and drama that’s usually only experienced watching big-screen horror films. The battle on the farm between the survivors and the undead is riveting and will keep the audience guessing who will make it off the farm alive and who will become a meal for the hungry, ugly, decaying flesh-eaters. One can’t help but wonder why the group couldn’t see when the army of zombies were heading towards the farm that there were way too many of them to kill, corral, and control. Why didn’t they just load up into Dale’s RV and the other vehicles and head out in the opposite direction in search of a new home?!

The performances in this episode are perhaps some of the finest from the cast, with everyone acting tough and becoming warriors while also showing true terror as their fight against the undead begins to turn and they all realize just how vulnerable they all are. Especially impressive in this episode are the performances of Andrew Lincoln, Lauren Holden, Scott Wilson, Lauren Cohan, Steven Yeun, and Norman Reedus who have become by far the most interesting, conflicted, and soulful characters in the series.

The production on this episode outdid itself, with all the different zombie slayings as well as the destruction of the farm, and the stunning cinematic scene of the burning collapse of the barn.

This is, without a doubt, the best episode of the season, finally allowing the show to become what it always should have been: a truly scary, dark, apocalyptic zombie series. Finally, back on the open road, the band of survivors, terrified, distrusting, and unsure of their next move, will soon be faced with new challenges, meeting up with a new character and trying to stay clear of hungry zombies on the prowl. Here’s looking forward to Season 3.

Steel Magnolias is blooming again, with Lifetime set to make a made-for-television film based on the play and 1989 feature film. Queen Latifah is set to star and executive produce the Lifetime Original Movie Event which will go into production next month in Atlanta and will air later this year.

In addition to Queen Latifah, the cast of this Steel Magnolias will include Alfre Woodard, Phylicia Rashad, Jill Scott, Adepero Oduye, and Condola Rashad. Kenny Leon (A Raisin in the Sun) is directing from a script adapted by Sally Robinson (Iron Jawed Angels).

According to Lifetime, this version will “chronicle the lives and friendship of six women in Louisiana. Supporting each other through their triumphs and tragedies, they congregate at Truvy’s beauty shop to ponder the mysteries of life and death, husbands and children – and hair and nails – all the important topics that bring women together.”

“The caliber of talent associated with this film is astounding and falls in line with our strategy to make Lifetime a first stop for the industry’s best both in front of and behind the camera. Queen Latifah, Phylicia, Alfre, Jill, Adepero and Condola are some of the most celebrated women in music, film, television and stage – and we could not be more thrilled and honored for them to bring Robert Harling’s poignant story about the strength of women to a whole new generation,” stated Nancy Dubuc, President and General Manager of Lifetime Networks.

‘The Walking Dead’ Announces Who Will Play Michonne

The Walking Dead Midseason Poster

The second season finale of The Walking Dead just wrapped up and no spoilers here in case you haven’t watched it yet, but let’s just say it was everything you could have wanted from the final episode of the season and more. Much more. Zombies were everywhere, and our heroes were running for their lives. It was crazy!

Anyway, with season two now over and done with, AMC has revealed who will be playing Michonne in season three (we got a brief glimpse of the character in the season two finale). Danai Gurira (The Visitor) will play Michonne, a “mysterious woman armed with a sword” who’s a fan favorite in the Robert Kirkman comic books.

The Walking Dead Plot (for those who haven’t caught on to the series yet):

The Walking Dead tells the story of the months and years after a zombie apocalypse, following a group of survivors who travel in search of a safe and secure home. The series goes on to explore the challenges of life in a world overrun by walkers, where the interpersonal conflicts often present a greater danger than anything else and over time, the characters grow willing to do almost anything to survive.

‘Prometheus’ New Trailer Arrives

It’s not an Alien prequel or sequel, although you can’t really tell that by the Prometheus trailer. Director Ridley Scott creates a new world with his return to the sci-fi genre, but it does appear to be a world inspired by the Alien franchise.

Starring Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, and Noomi Rapace, Prometheus is set for a June 8, 2012 release.

The Plot:

Ridley Scott, director of Alien and Blade Runner, returns to the genre he helped define. With Prometheus, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

TBS Announces ‘King of the Nerds’ Competition Series

TBS Logo

Are you a major nerd? Are you unafraid of showing off all of your nerdiness in public? Then TBS’ new unscripted competition series King of the Nerds has been created with you in mind. TBS dubbed the series the “ultimate nerd-off” and has set two actors famous for playing nerds as hosts: Revenge of the Nerds stars Robert Carradine and Curtis Armstrong.

“It’s been said we’re living in the ‘Age of the Nerd’, and if so, what better way to acknowledge that than to have a competition to crown the King of the Nerds?” asked Michael Wright, executive vice president, head of programming for TBS, TNT and Turner Classic Movies (TCM). “King of the Nerds is a lot of fun as it not only celebrates nerd culture, but also illuminates it. We believe King of the Nerds is an ideal fit with The Big Bang Theory, and we look forward to having it on the network.”

King of the Nerds will be the first-ever nerd-on-nerd warfare competition series. Who better to have as our hosts than Robert and Curtis, the founding fathers of the Nerd Universe,” stated Jimmy Fox, head of creative development for Electus. “We are incredibly excited to partner with TBS to not only celebrate the nerd in each and every one of us, but to bring an incredibly fun, smart, and entertaining competition series to the TBS audience.”

TBS ordered eight episodes of series, which will debut in early 2013.

How It Works:

The show invites competitors spanning the full nerd spectrum to come together to face challenges that will test their intellect, ingenuity, skills, and pop-culture prowess. The nerds will first compete as teams before moving on to individual challenges, all with the goal of being named the quintessential master of all things nerdy.

Being Flynn Movie Review

Reviewed by Kevin Finnerty

“I’m Jonathan Flynn. Everything I write is a masterpiece,” says Robert De Niro as Mr. Flynn who believes himself to be one of the three great American writers who has yet to be discovered in the dramatic film, Being Flynn.

This is not Jonathan Flynn’s story though, not according to his estranged son, Nick (Paul Dano), Nick believes it’s his. Working at a homeless shelter while trying to figure out what he really wants to do with his life, Nick is shocked to see his eccentric and racist father turn up at the shelter. His dad’s fallen on hard times after losing his job as a cab driver and is looking for a place to stay and a bed for the night. Still deeply struggling with the loss of his mother, Jody (Julianne Moore), and blaming his father for everything that ever went wrong in his and his mother’s lives, Nick does not want to deal or even see his father at the shelter. Night after night, Nick witnesses his father slipping more and more into a scattered and lost sense of reality.

Desperately trying to avoid a son’s responsibility to his long-absent parent and have a relationship with one of his co-workers, Denise (Olivia Thirlby), Nick begins to realize the cold hard fact that he’s not going to be able to escape having to confront the ghosts of his past. This realization could possibly mean discovering a new relationship with Jonathan.

Based on a true story, Being Flynn is a bland, slow-paced melodrama that isn’t improved with an unimpressive and at times over the top performance by Robert De Niro. The forced and uninteresting relationship between Dano’s Nick and De Niro’s Jonathan has no real depth or emotional impact.
Paul Dano’s performance as the long-suffering, self-destructive Nick is too nonchalant and at times downright boring, and the audience can’t ever become invested or interested in his struggle. De Niro’s portrayal of Jonathan Flynn is at times so overbearing and larger than life, especially during his stay at the homeless shelter (which seems like it’s never going to end) that it becomes tedious and tiresome. The one stand out solid performance in the film is by Olivia Thirlby as Denise the co-worker who starts to have a physical relationship with Nick and begins to care for him but fears getting to0 close and dragged down into his dark all-consuming family drama.

Ultimately, Being Flynn is a moody, brooding film focusing on two very unlikeable characters who everyone would be better off not knowing.

GRADE: C-

Being Flynn is rated R for language throughout, some sexual content, drug use, and brief nudity.
