Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Behind the Scenes Video

MTV went behind the scenes on the set of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, the big screen adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s bestselling novel which finds the 16th US President not only politically active but actively involved in taking out vampires. Benjamin Walker stars as Honest Abe, and in this video from MTV News, he talks about playing the historical figure and how the story brings to life Lincoln’s world – but with a bizarre twist.

MTV also spoke to director Timur Bekmambetov who revealed that Walker won the role by reading the Gettysburg Address during his audition as if he actually wrote it. And while there aren’t any real scenes from the movie in this clip, just seeing Walker in full Lincoln costume makes watching the video worthwhile.

The Canadian comedy Starbuck earned the Mercedes-Benz Audience Award Best Narrative Feature at the 2012 Palm Springs International Film Festival held January 5-16, 2012. Directed by Ken Scott, the film centers around a prolific sperm donor known as Starbuck who is the target of a class action suit filed by his 142 children.

The Audience Award Best Documentary Feature category wound up in a tie, with The Girls in the Band and Wish Me Away sharing the top honor. Judy Chaikin directed The Girls in the Band about women jazz musicians, and Bobbie Birleffii and Beverly Kopf helmed Wish Me Away about singer-songwriter Chely Wright, a devout Christian who also happens to be a lesbian.

Hungary’s official Best Foreign Language Film Oscar entry, The Turin Horse, earned the Palm Spring Film Festival’s FIPRESCI Award for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year. PSIFF describes the film as “an unforgettable end-of-days parable largely confined to an ascetic shack shared by an old man and his daughter as a terrible blight takes hold outside.”

Announcing the winners, Festival Director Darryl Macdonald stated, “This year’s line up encompassed a particularly satisfying blend of challenging but highly compelling works, more broadly accessible crowd pleasers and debut films distinguished by their distinctive storytelling craft and technical prowess. The audience balloting skewed more highly favorable across the board than in recent years, and our juries have made astute and well-reasoned choices in every instance. In summary, it’s been a very good year for the cinema, and a hugely rewarding year for all who worked on or participated in this labor of filmic love.”

Killing Lincoln Documentary Coming to National Geographic Channel

Killing Lincoln Book CoverBill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard’s Killing Lincoln: The Shocking Assassination that Changed America Forever is set to become a two-hour documentary, with National Geographic and Tony and Ridley Scott teaming up to produce the documentary. Filming is expected to begin this spring with an eye on a 2013 premiere.

“National Geographic has a great legacy of telling some of history’s most riveting stories,” stated author/executive producer Bill O’Reilly. “The assassination of President Abraham Lincoln is no exception, as it continues to be one of the most significant, life-changing events in America’s young history. Ridley and Tony Scott are incredible directors, producers and amazing storytellers with the ability to bring this story to life in a way no one else can.”

According to the National Geographic Channel, the program will combine historical archives and “quality re-enactments with CGI.”

Producer and three-time Oscar nominee Ridley Scott said, “National Geographic Channel is the perfect partner for us to bring Bill O’Reilly’s dynamic Killing Lincoln to the screen. We are excited to share with audiences this epic and thrilling story surrounding Lincoln’s assassination, one of the most notorious crimes in American history.”

The official Killing Lincoln synopsis:

Killing Lincoln is the first work of history from best-selling author and television news anchor Bill O’Reilly. The narrative recounts one of the most dramatic stories in American history — how one gunshot changed the country forever.

In the spring of 1865, the bloody saga of America’s Civil War finally comes to an end after a series of increasingly harrowing battles. President Abraham Lincoln’s generous terms for Robert E. Lee’s surrender are devised to fulfill Lincoln’s dream of healing a divided nation, with the former Confederates allowed to reintegrate into American society. But one man and his band of murderous accomplices, perhaps reaching into the highest ranks of the U.S. government, are not appeased. In the midst of the patriotic celebrations in Washington, D.C., John Wilkes Booth — charismatic ladies’ man and impenitent racist — murders Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s Theatre. A furious manhunt ensues and Booth immediately becomes the country’s most wanted fugitive. Lafayette C. Baker, a smart but shifty New York detective and former Union spy, unravels the string of clues leading to Booth, while federal forces track his accomplices. The thrilling chase ends in a fiery shoot-out and a series of court-ordered executions — including that of the first woman ever executed by the U.S. government, Mary Surratt.

Hulu Gets Into Original Scripted Programming

Hulu' Battleground
Hulu's Battleground - Photo by Pamela Littky
Hulu isn’t satisfied to just stream network shows anymore. The online video destination site is dipping its toes in the original scripted series arena, with its first series – Battleground – debuting on February 14th (because you hear ‘battleground’ and you immediately think of Valentine’s Day, right?).

The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb is executive producing the series along with JD Walsh and Hagai Shaham.

Hulu’s also bringing Morgan Spurlock’s A Day in the Life back for a second season in March. And writer/director Richard Linklater’s first episodic documentary series, Up to Speed, will debut on Hulu this summer.

Hulu’s senior vice president of content Andy Forssell made the announcement, stating, “JD Walsh, Morgan Spurlock and Richard Linklater are each smart and distinctive storytellers with very specific points of view. Their creative chops are what make for great TV – each have that certain something that makes viewers not just love their shows but also tell their friends to go and watch them. Couple this extraordinary storytelling with the Hulu platform – which has proven to be an efficient way of connecting engaged audiences with shows they truly love – and it pays off in a big way for creators, viewers and advertisers alike.

More on Battleground [Courtesy of Hulu]:

Hulu’s first original scripted series Battleground is set in the world of political campaigns in the battleground state of Wisconsin. Advancing the faux documentary-style workplace dramedy, Battleground explores the behind-the-scenes chaos of an unruly band of campaign workers and volunteers who leave behind ordinary lives for the madhouse. It’s about life on the campaign trail and the people who are drawn to it. Running the campaign of a distant third-place candidate, campaign manager Chris “Tak” Davis needs a team that is aggressive, smart and driven…or available. As the Wisconsin senate race begins to take on national implications, Tak must overcome corrupt politicians, staff in fighting, and his own personal vices to win the primary – all while a camera crew follows his every move.

The Battleground cast includes Jay Hayden (“Chris ‘Tak’ Davis”); Teri Reeves (“Kara ‘KJ’ Jamison”); Jack DeSena (“Cole Graner”); Ben Samuel (“Ben Werner”); Lindsey Payne (“Lindsey Cutter”); Jordan T. Maxwell (“Jordan T. Mosley”) and Alison Haislip (“Ali Laurents”).

More on A Day In The Life [Courtesy of Hulu]:

The first season of Morgan Spurlock’s A Day in the Life documented the ordinary lives of extraordinary people, from multi-platinum musician will.i.am and music sensation Girl Talk to street artist Mr. Brainwash and mogul Sir Richard Branson. Hulu renews its successful first original series to deliver 10 new episodes of A Day in the Life. For season two, Spurlock captures the daily routines of highly motivated individuals as they follow their passions, including actor Joel McHale, comedian Marc Maron and UFC fighter Jason “Mayhem” Miller, among others.

More on Up to Speed [Courtesy of Hulu]:

Filmmaker Richard Linklater, best known for his movies Dazed and Confused, School of Rock, Waking Life, and Oscar-nominated Before Sunset, has created a new docu-series for Hulu called Up to Speed. The show represents Linklater’s first foray into episodic storytelling. Each week Up to Speed follows tour guide, historian and flaneur Timothy “Speed” Levitch (“The Cruise”) as he visits the monumentally ignored monuments of America’s cities, from the shoe gardens of San Francisco to the luckiest subway grate in New York City.
