Spotlight On: Robin Meade

Robin Meade

As host of HLN’s Morning Express with Robin Meade, this award-winning journalist and television personality lives in a whirl of 2:30 AM weekday wakeup calls, six hours of anchoring the news each day, assignments (like skydiving with President George H. W. Bush) and honors, including induction into the Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame and the 2010 Gracie Award for Outstanding Anchor from American Women in Radio & Television.

But she has also loved singing in front of audiences as far back as kindergarten and Country Music specifically since first hearing a Mary Chapin Carpenter CD.

Her two sides intersect on her debut album. Brand New Day is produced by Victoria Shaw, with Billy Dean coproducing “Morning Sunshine,” which he wrote and sings with Meade. That’s one of six tracks that she co-wrote, most of them a mix of down-home and uptown. When she fumes about being stuck behind a car whose turn signal blinks for six miles on “Letting It Go” (written by Meade, Shaw and Matt Lopez) or revels in her command of big-city office politics on “Put My High Heels On” (Meade, Shaw and John Rich), you know she’s writing about what she knows, which after all is the essence of Country.

Still, when called back to her roots, Meade doesn’t disappoint. From her duet with Jim Brickman on the searing ballad “Welcome Home” (Brickman and Shaw) to her first single, a banjo-studded treatment of Don Henley’s “Dirty Laundry” (Henley and Danny Kortchmar) featuring Bo Bice, Kix Brooks, Gary Burr, Sarah Buxton and Shaw, she proves that those roots thrive just under the surface.

Brand New Day is available exclusively on iTunes and in greeting card sections of Target stores.

In Her Own Words:

DREAM DUET PARTNER
“I have two: Kenny Chesney and Bono of U2.”

SONG YOU WISH YOU HAD WRITTEN
“‘Never Alone,’ by Victoria Shaw, Gary Burr and Sarah Buxton.”

BOOK ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND
“The Power, by Rhonda Byrne.”

SONG YOU SING IN THE SHOWER
“Whatever is stuck in my head. Last week it was an old song by Mike + the Mechanics. This week it’s ‘If I Die Young’ by The Band Perry.”

PET PEEVE
“My pet peeve is when cashiers ask you three separate times if you’d like to open a store credit card, even though you’ve already said no each previous time.”

WHAT YOU HOPE PEOPLE SAY ABOUT YOU IN 50 YEARS
“She wasn’t typical.”

SOMETHING WE’D NEVER GUESS ABOUT YOU
“I grew up eating squirrel! Maybe it played into my vegetarianism now. Ha!”

Final 3 Dancing with the Stars Contestants Talk to Jimmy Kimmel

Hope Solo didn’t make an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! however Ricki Lake, J.R. Martinez, and Rob Kardashian showed up on Kimmel’s show to talk about their chances of being this season of Dancing with the Stars‘ big winner. Lake told Kimmel she considered it a miracle she made it to the finals and said she believes Rob could win because of all the Kardashian fans out there (she must not have seen the new online ‘No More Kardashians’ petition which is so popular it’s crashing its server). And J.R. says that while the show is tough, there’s nothing more difficult than military service. The guys he served with are watching him, and he’s spent the show hoping his credibility among them doesn’t go down.

Mob Wives Returns in January 2012

Mob WivesVH1 will debut the second season of the reality show Mob Wives on January 1, 2012 at 8pm ET/PT. The network’s also set to unveil the spin-off, Mob Wives: Chicago, with a new bunch of ‘Syndicate Sisters’ next spring. Mob Wives: Chicago will use Al Capone’s home as the backdrop.

“Our viewers connected so strongly with our New York cast that we were skeptical about trying to repeat that success,” stated Jeff Olde, Executive Vice President, Original Programming & Production. “But once we met these ladies from Chicago and heard their truly unbelievable stories, we knew that viewers would become just as captivated as we did. These women’s life experiences may be far different from our own, but their current struggles to stand on their own two feet are relatable to everyone.”

“Audiences will be blown away by the larger-than-life characters with their own unique stories to tell,” added Jimmy Fox, Executive Producer and Head of Creative Development for Electus.

Drita is considering her options when it comes to leaving her husband Lee – while Carla’s relationship with her estranged husband Joe may take an unexpected twist. And, of course, everyone wants to know what’s in Karen’s soon-to-be-released book – the one she moved back to New York to write!”

Haywire Loses R-Rating Appeal

Steven Soderbergh’s action drama Haywire starring mixed martial arts champion Gina Carano will remain R-rated after the MPAA turned down a request to change the rating from R to PG-13.

Here’s the statement from the MPAA:

“The Classification and Rating Appeals Board today upheld the R rating given to the movie Haywire. The Classification and Rating Administration (CARA) had assigned the movie the R rating for ‘some violence.’ In the appeal brought by Five Continents, the Appeals Board heard statements on behalf of Haywire from Steven Soderbergh, the film’s director, and Kyle Davies, President, Worldwide Distribution for Relativity Media. The Classification and Rating Administration was represented by Chairman Joan Graves.”

The Haywire Plot:

Mallory Kane is a highly trained operative who works for a government security contractor in the dirtiest, most dangerous corners of the world. After successfully freeing a Chinese journalist held hostage, she is double crossed and left for dead by someone close to her in her own agency. Suddenly the target of skilled assassins who know her every move, Mallory must find the truth in order to stay alive.

Using her black-ops military training, she devises an ingenious—and dangerous—trap. But when things go haywire, Mallory realizes she’ll be killed in the blink of an eye unless she finds a way to turn the tables on her ruthless adversary.

Prime Suspect Bites the Dust

It appears as though after finishing up its 13 episodes, Maria Bello and the cast will be saying goodbye to Prime Suspect. Although NBC has stood behind the police drama, despite low ratings, it appears their goodwill only goes so far. The show was left off the network’s mid-season lineup and probably won’t be picked up for any further episodes.

Prime Suspect has never caught on with viewers, garnering the lowest numbers of any show in its 10pm Thursday time slot. Beginning in mid-January, the new drama The Firm will be seen in Prime Suspect‘s place.

CBS News Chairman and 60 MINUTES Executive Producer Jeff Fager stated, “This program represents a new direction for morning television at CBS. We will produce a broadcast that is interesting and compelling and on top of the big stories of the day. It will be lively and engaging and worth your while.”
