André Holland (Moonlight) and Rosario Dawson (Ahsoka) have joined Netflix’s Terminator Zero‘s voice cast along with Sonoya Mizuno (House of the Dragon) and Ann Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale). The newcomers join Timothy Olyphant who was previously announced to star as the voice of Terminator in the anime series.

Terminator Zero is the first animated entry in the popular Terminator franchise. The eight-episode first season will feature new characters, with Ghost in the Shell’s Production IG handling the animation.

“I asked my long-time friend and colleague Mamoru Oshii what he thought about the idea of turning Terminator into an animated series. His response was ‘Ishikawa, are you out of your mind?’ At that instant, I was confident we should get on board. As huge fans, our team at Production I.G is putting their heart and souls into creating this series. We hope fans will enjoy it!” said Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, President and CEO of Production I.G., when the series was greenlit back in February 2021.

Netflix is targeting an August 29, 2024 release date. August 29th is known as Judgement Day to Terminator fans, marking the date that Skynet became self-aware.

“2022: A future war has raged for decades between the few human survivors and an endless army of machines. 1997: The AI known as Skynet gained self-awareness and began its war against humanity,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “Caught between the future and this past is a soldier sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. She arrives in 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee who works to launch a new AI system designed to compete with Skynet’s impending attack on humanity. As Malcolm navigates the moral complexities of his creation, he is hunted by an unrelenting assassin from the future which forever alters the fate of his three children.”

Netflix released the following descriptions of the characters the just-announced cast will be voicing:

• Rosario Dawson as Kokoro – An advanced AI and Japan’s answer to Skynet, if brought online, Kokoro will be endowed with the same power as Skynet. Kokoro must calculate for itself: is humanity the plague Skynet believes? Or are human beings worth saving?
• André Holland as Malcolm Lee – A genius computer programmer and father of three, Malcolm Lee is haunted by prophetic nightmares of an apocalyptic future. He’s spent the last decade creating a secret artificial intelligence that he believes will be humanity’s last hope.
• Sonoya Mizuno as Eiko – Coming from a post-Judgement Day 2022, Eiko is a resistance fighter sent back in time to stop Malcolm from launching Kokoro.
• Ann Dowd as The Prophet – In the future, the Prophet is the philosophical guide for the human resistance, a light shepherding survivors in the darkness of the unknown future ahead.

Mattson Tomlin created the series and serves as an executive producer along with Skydance.

Coming off the massive hit Baby Reindeer, Richard Gadd is following up with Lions (working title) for HBO and BBC. Gadd created Lions and will write and executive produce, with Alexandra Brodski (Somewhere Boy) and Eshref Reybrouck (Cheyenne & Lola) directing.

HBO and BBC offered this description of Gadd’s next series: “When Niall’s estranged ‘brother’ Ruben shows up at his wedding, it leads to an explosion of violence that catapults us back through their lives. Spanning almost forty years from the 1980s to the present day, this ambitious series will cover the highs and lows of the brothers’ relationship, from them meeting as teenagers to their falling out as adults – with all the good, bad, terrible, funny, angry, and challenging moments along the way. It will capture the wild energy of a changing city – a changing world, even – and try to get to the bottom of the difficult question… What does it mean to be a man?”

“Ordering a HBO boxset of The Sopranos, The Wire, or Oz and watching it from start to finish were some of the happiest moments of my childhood. Since then, it has always been a dream of mine to work with HBO and be part of their iconic roster of shows,” said Richard Gadd. “I am so grateful to Francesca Orsi, Kara Buckley, and Clint LaVigne for taking this chance on the show and on Ruben and Niall too who – despite growing up in a dead-end Scottish town – would be absolutely pinching themselves at this! I cannot wait to get started.”

Additional executive producers include Tally Garner and Morven Reid from Mam Tor Productions, BBC’s Gaynor Holmes, and Gavin Smith for BBC Scotland.

“We are tremendously excited to partner with the BBC and Richard Gadd, whose remarkable talent continues to make waves across the globe,” stated Kara Buckley, Senior Vice President HBO Drama Programming. “With this new, gripping and evocative series, we are proud to welcome Richard to the HBO family.”

The six-episode season is produced by Wendy Griffin (Limbo).

“Morven and I are utterly delighted to be partnering with HBO alongside the BBC and can’t wait to bring Richard Gadd’s incredible vision to the screen. The quality and prestige of HBO is world-renowned, and we are so grateful to the HBO Drama team and the BBC for supporting us on this journey,” said Tally Garner, MD, Mam Tor Productions.

And Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, added, “We are delighted that HBO are joining us to bring Richard Gadd’s exquisite Lions scripts to the screen. This is bold, brilliant, one-of-a-kind storytelling and we can’t wait for viewers to see it.”

‘The Hungry Games: Alaska’s Big Bear Challenge’ Follows Bears Preparing to Hibernate

Peacock’s adding a new twist to reality competition programming with The Hungry Games: Alaska’s Big Bear Challenge. The three-episode documentary series takes a lighthearted approach to the traditional nature docuseries, adding a reality TV spin as it follows the bears of Alaska’s Katmai National Park.

Rhys Darby (Our Flag Means Death, Flight of the Conchords) narrates the docuseries which will premiere on Peacock on July 11, 2024.

From Peacock: “The Hungry Games: Alaska’s Big Bear Challenge puts a playful competition spin on the bears of Alaska’s Katmai National Park as they bulk up for winter hibernation. Over 150 days, the bears battle the elements – and each other – using brains and brawn to consume three million calories and gain up to 200 pounds in Nature’s real-life survival show. Unbeknownst to the bears, their progress is being tracked and ranked for a television audience with narration that combines fascinating facts about bear behavior with clever color commentary.”

Alison Barrat, James Manfull, Ari Mark, Phil Lott, and David Brown serve as executive producers.

‘Interview with the Vampire’ Sinks Its Teeth Into a Third Season

AMC didn’t keep Interview with the Vampire fans waiting, announcing the popular series has been renewed for a third season. The official announcement came just days before season two’s finale airs on June 30, 2024.

Season two’s cast is lead by Jacob Anderson as Louis de Pointe du Lac, Eric Bogosian as Daniel Molloy, and Assad Zaman as Armand. Sam Reid stars as Lestat de Lioncourt, Ben Daniels is Santiago, and Delainey Hayles plays Claudia. The announcement did not confirm who’s returning, although we know poor Claudia turned to ashes in episode seven. It’s still possible Hayles will be involved in flashbacks.

AMC issued this synopsis for the upcoming third season: “In season three, resentful of the perfunctory portrayal in the trashy bestseller Interview With The Vampire, the Vampire Lestat sets his story straight in a way only the Vampire Lestat can—by starting a band and going on tour. Gabrielle. Nicholas. Magnus. Marius. Those Who Must Be Kept. They join Louis, Armand, Molloy, Sam, Raglan, Fareed and others we can’t tell you about yet on a sexy pilgrimage across space, time and trauma. No Auto-Tuning. No Trigger Warnings. All Feels Amplified.”

Rolin Jones guides the series as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Additional executive producers include Mary Johnson (overseer of AMC’s Anne Rice Immortal Universe), Mark Taylor, and Christopher Rice. Author Anne Rice has a posthumous executive producer credit.

“When you buy the rights to 18 Anne Rice novels that have sold more than 150 million copies, in your wildest dreams you hope there’s a show as good as Interview on the other end,” said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks. “What Rolin has done with these stories and characters, working so closely with Mark, as the steward of this universe, has exceeded the loftiest version of our expectations. We can’t wait to see where this creative team takes the series from here and know we are walking alongside an incredibly loyal and passionate base of fans who feel as strongly about this material as we do.”

Currently, AMC’s Anne Rice Immortal Universe includes Interview with the Vampire, Mayfair Witches, and The Talamasca.

“Thank you to the brilliant casts and crews of the first two seasons that got us to this day,” said showrunner Jones. “Thank you to the rabid, beautifully unwell fandom that scaled the castle walls to get us to this day. Thank you to Dan McDermott, Ben Davis for the funds and tools to continue the great work of dramatizing Anne Rice’s extraordinary novels. And sincere apologies to the family and friends of actor Sam Reid, for the possession that continues to this day. Monsieur L extends his promise to return his body upon cancellation (may that evening never come.)”

The cast also includes Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, Bonnie Hunt, Kristofer Hivju, Nick Kroll, and Wesley Kimmel. Plus J.K. Simmons as Old Saint Nick.

“After Santa Claus – Code Name: RED ONE – is kidnapped, the North Pole’s Head of Security (Dwayne Johnson) must team up with the world’s most infamous bounty hunter (Chris Evans) in a globe-trotting, action-packed mission to save Christmas,” reads Amazon MGM Studios’ synopsis.

HBO orders ‘Lanterns’ to series (Image Courtesy of DC Studios)

HBO’s officially given the “green” light to Lanterns, based on DC Comics’ Green Lantern characters. The straight-to-series order is for eight episodes, with Emmy nominee Chris Mundy (Ozark, True Detective: Night Country), Emmy winner Damon Lindelof (Watchmen), and Eisner Award winner Tom King (Mister Miracle) committed to co-write and executive produce.

“The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland,” reads HBO’s synopsis.

Mundy will guide the series as showrunner.

“We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon, and Tom at the helm,” stated James Gunn and Peter Safran, Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs of DC Studios. “John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with Superman.”

The comic book-inspired series will be produced by HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios.

“We are elated to be reuniting with both Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof as they partner with Tom for this fresh take on DC’s Green Lantern. As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live-action series will mark an exciting new era,” said Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO and Max Content.

HBO has not released a target date for the start of production.
