Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in 'Dirty Dancing'
Will Baby be stuck in a corner in the remake? Will there be a romantic watery dance scene, will an abortion play a role in the story, and what era will a Dirty Dancing remake take place in? These questions haven’t been answered, however, Lionsgate Films has announced Kenny Ortega – director of the High School Musical films and Michael Jackson’s This Is It – will helm the remake of the dance film.
Ortega choreographed the original 1987 romantic drama, which starred Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey, Jerry Orbach, and Cynthia Rhodes. That film was made on a $6 million budget and has grossed over $200 million.
“Amazingly, it has been almost 25 years since the original film was released, but the fans remain legion and engaged more than ever with a brand that is special and vital to them. We believe that the timing couldn’t be better to modernize this story on the big screen, and we are proud to have Kenny Ortega at the helm,” said Joe Drake, co-COO of Lionsgate and President of the Motion Picture Group.
Said Ortega of the project, “The opportunity to direct Dirty Dancing is like returning home for me. Growing up in the 60s on the dance floor helped define me as a person and as an artist. I am looking forward to assembling a great creative team and an exciting cast to bring Dirty Dancing to the screen for a new generation. Patrick Swayze set the bar for men dancing in the movies as Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire did before him. I believe everywhere you look there is evidence that the talent is out there and I can’t wait to begin the process of discovering the next breakout triple-threats.”
He continues, “I want to thank writer/producer Eleanor Bergstein for originally choosing me to choreograph Dirty Dancing and for her continuous support. I’m thrilled to once again be working with my friend and producing partner Debra Martin Chase. My deep appreciation to Alli Shearmur, Joe Drake, and everyone at Lionsgate for their enthusiasm to make the film and for their confidence in me to helm the project.”
“This remake of Dirty Dancing presents an exciting opportunity to both celebrate what has made this movie so beloved and refresh and enhance it so that new audiences can claim it as their own,” said producer Debra Martin Chase. “I am thrilled to be working with Kenny Ortega again and with the dynamic creative team at Lionsgate.”
About the Dirty Dancing Remake:
The new film is a celebration of one of the most beloved movies of all time. Paying tribute to the emotional excitement of first love, the thrills and complexity of sexual awakening, the soul-stirring power of dance, and the classic tale of teenage Baby’s forbidden romance with Johnny Castle, the remake will incorporate classic songs from the 1960s, hits from the original film and brand new compositions.

DeGraw was alone at the time, however, the New York Post reports he had been out drinking with friends prior to being assaulted at the corner of 6th Street and 1st Avenue. After the beating, DeGraw kept walking and was then struck by a taxi, but not seriously injured.
DeGraw’s on tour with Maroon 5 and Train, and had to cancel a performance scheduled for August 8th in New York. It’s unclear when he’ll be able to perform again.

Whether you’re Team Peeta or Team Gale doesn’t matter as both sides are likely to greet the news of a confirmed release date for the second film of The Hunger Games franchise, Catching Fire, with equal amounts of enthusiasm. Lionsgate wants The Hunger Games fans to mark November 22, 2013 on their calendars as that’s when they’re hoping Catching Fire catches fire at the box office.
Suzanne Collins’ bestselling trilogy (The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay) provides the source material for four feature films, the first of which is currently in production. The heroes of Collins’ books – Katniss, Gale, and Peeta – will be brought to life in the film version by Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone), Liam Hemsworth (Thor star Chris Hemsworth’s little brother), and Josh Hutcherson.
Announcing Catching Fire‘s release date, Joe Drake – Co-COO of Lionsgate and President of its Motion Picture Group – said, “The magical thing about the Hunger Games trilogy is that the books have such a vastly broad appeal. The stories truly offer something for everyone, and the period around the Thanksgiving weekend is such an opportunity for families and friends to make an event of going to the movies.”
The Hunger Games is set for a March 23, 2012 release and is directed by Gary Ross (Seabiscuit).
The buzz surrounding director Nicholas Winding Refn’s action thriller Drive kicked into high gear when the film had its premiere at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. There, the hard R-rated Drive earned Refn best director honors and had everyone talking about Ryan Gosling’s performance.
Drive will screen at the Toronto Film Festival and then, finally, will hit theaters on September 16th for the rest of us to check out.
The Plot: Ryan Gosling stars as a Los Angeles wheelman for hire, stunt driving for movie productions by day and steering getaway vehicles for criminal operations by night. A loner by nature, Driver can’t help falling in love with his beautiful but vulnerable neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan), a young mother dragged into a dangerous criminal underworld by the return of ex-convict husband Standard (Oscar Isaac).
After a heist operation, intended to help Standard pay off protection money, spins out of control, Driver finds himself driving defense for the girl he loves, tailgated by a syndicate of deadly serious criminals (Albert Brooks and Ron Perlman). When the gangsters reveal that they’re after more than the bag of money in his trunk—that they’re coming straight for Irene and her son—Driver is forced to shift gears and go on the offense.
WPXI has been covering the shooting of the third Batman film from Christopher Nolan, The Dark Knight Rises, in Pittsburgh and now has behind-the-scenes footage of a fight scene from the film. Snow falls on the streets of Pittsburgh as Christian Bale as Batman and Tom Hardy as Bane engage in a fist fight surrounded by police officers on the steps of Gotham City Hall.
The 2-minute video provides a sneak peek at what’s going on with The Dark Knight Rises.
So, what happened? If you don’t have access to catch up on the show or just want to refresh your memory, here’s a recap of Episode 7. It’s a recap, so spoilers are included:
Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) and Sookie (Anna Paquin) showed off a lot of skin as they continued their brand new romantic relationship. Eric’s a different vampire with his memory erased by a witch, and much of this week’s show had to deal with a discussion between the new lovers over whether they will remain together when Eric’s memory returns. Meanwhile, Bill (Stephen Moyer) had a lot on his plate, what with one of his sheriff’s, Luis (Peter Macdissi), taken over by the witch, Antonia, in Marty’s body (played by Fiona Shaw). Bill’s forced to kill Luis but not before Luis reveals Antonia’s plans to resurrect the vampires and send them out into the daylight.
Pam (Kristin Bauer) is stopped from killing Tara (Rutina Wesley) by humans capturing the attack on video to send to TMZ. Tara sends her lover off, warning her that everyone she is involved with ends up dead. Tara’s had it with vampires and when Antonia (who has now escaped from prison) asks her to join her crusade to rid the world of vampires, Tara’s immediately onboard. She then sets out to recruit others to this special circle of witches.
Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) learns he’s a medium, which explains how he saved Jesus (Kevin Alejandro) from the snake bite. The twosome return to Bon Temps where Lafayette sees the spirit who’s been hanging out with Arlene’s (Carrie Preston) baby.
Alcide (Joe Manganiello) and Debbie (Brit Morgan) join the local werewolf pack and then, because Alcide’s really worried, go check up on Sookie who they last saw wandering through the woods alone during the full moon. They come across Sookie and Eric making love, and the look on Alcide’s face says it all. He’s definitely still interested in the telepath – and Debbie knows it.
Jason (Ryan Kwanten) continues to fight against his attraction to his best buddy Hoyt’s (Jim Parrack) girlfriend while Sheriff Andy (Chris Bauer) meets Holly (Lauren Bowles) for a disastrous first date. Sam (Sam Merlotte) confronts Luna (Janina Gavankar) about why she’s so pissed and learns his little bro, Tommy (Marshall Allman), shapeshifted into him while he was busy worrying about his burned-out rental units.
And the resurrection plot comes back into play as the episode ends with all the vampires in the area needing to be chained in silver during the daylight hours to keep them from being driven to go out into the sunlight when the witch casts her spell. Bill and Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) have a nice couple of scenes in which they speak their true feelings about each other, and then episode ends with the spell in full force and the vampires struggling against their silver chains as they’re being compelled to go out and meet the sun.
