‘Sugar’ Season 1 Episode 4 Recap: “Starry Eyed”

Sugar Season 1 Episode 4 Recap

We’ve arrived at the halfway point of Apple TV+’s Sugar with episode four, and we still haven’t discovered John Sugar’s real mission. After a brief video from Olivia Siegel (before she went missing), episode four finds John (Colin Farrell) finally showing up for an appointment with Dr. Vickers. For some reason, the visit reminds him The Thing starring Kurt Russell. He describes the scene from The Thing where a chest with teeth bites off arms.

Why is he bringing this up now? That’s unclear.

Although his vitals are good, the doctor is concerned that he might be depressed. John is in the middle of denying that’s true when his arm spasms. Vickers is worried John’s not okay, and John wonders to himself why Vickers and Ruby both believe something’s wrong. He thinks something’s up, but doesn’t know what.

David Siegel (Nate Corddry) and Kenny (Alex Hernandez) arrive at Helen Sugar’s home in Arizona and she recognizes David from the movies. She welcomes them in and confirms she’s John’s mom. They pay Helen a brief visit and after they leave, Helen informs John about their discussion. She warns John to be careful; David will not stop digging until he figures out the truth.

Meanwhile, David’s dad, Bernie Siegel (Dennis Boutsikaris), is home looking through old photos of Olivia’s deceased actress mother.

John calls Ruby (Kirby) for updates on Stallings, the man who’s a cohort of the dead guy from Olivia’s trunk. Ruby, who deleted all of Stallings’ records in episode three, lies and says she’s not finding much. She claims he’s only been involved in minor criminal activities, which is far from the truth.

John and Wiley head back to the hotel and Melanie (Amy Ryan) is waiting for them. After giving very good boy Wiley lots of love, she reveals Teresa (Carmen’s sister) has made it safely to San Diego. Also, she just remembered seeing Olivia and some girl caught up in an intense conversation. The stranger was extremely upset, but Melanie didn’t interrupt their conversation.

Although the incident took place six weeks ago, John and Melanie visit the shops in the area to see if anyone remembers seeing Olivia. They hit pay dirt when they stop by a record store and the young woman working there recognizes Olivia as a friend of Taylor. (She only opened up because she’s a huge fan of Melanie’s.)

Their next stop is Taylor’s place, and she’s reluctant to talk but eventually lets them in. Taylor (Isabella Riggs) reveals that she saw Olivia posting stories on Instagram about helping abused women and called her out on it. It turns out Taylor knows David Siegel, and he volunteered to work with her to get a part in his dad’s next film. But then he wouldn’t stop texting her and asking to come over. She turned him down, in no uncertain terms, and he sent a video of them having sex. He had hidden cameras at his place, and they hooked up there just once years ago.

Taylor became deeply upset and felt violated. And then he threatened to release the video if she didn’t allow him to have sex any way he wanted. She went to the cops but once she mentioned Jonathan Siegel, they didn’t look into it. Bernie’s lawyer offered her money to sign an NDA and Taylor refused.

Taylor shared all this with Olivia, and Olivia wasn’t surprised. She confessed that sexual blackmail is her brother’s thing. Apparently, he’s done it dozens of times. Melanie did not know that David’s a predator, or that Bernie has been covering for him. But Olivia knew and now she’s gone. Are the two things connected?

David calls his mom on the way back from Arizona and she suggests he doesn’t tell his dad just yet.

John wants to meet with Jonathan Siegel, and Jonathan’s assistant gives John a ticket to a retrospective of classic film star Lorraine Everly. (Lorraine and Jonathan were married for 23 years and made six films together.) It’s a crowded event, and Jonathan (James Cromwell) promises they’ll have a chat after the screening.

Jonathan and his son, Bernie, pose on the red carpet while quietly insulting each other’s parenting skills. David’s mother and Bernie’s ex-wife, Margit (Anna Gunn), introduces herself to John and asks leading questions about what he knows about her son. John holds his cards close to his vest and doesn’t answer.

Next, John confronts Bernie about David’s secrets, assuring him it’ll all come out sometime. John lets Bernie know that he’s aware of Bernie’s part in the coverup.

After their brief but telling talk, John feels no closer to understanding how David being a sex offender fits in with Olivia being missing. John notices that right after Melanie arrives, she looks at Bernie and then texts him. John wonders if he’s misjudged Melanie and if she knows more about Bernie’s coverup than she let on.

John talks movies with the projectionist while keeping his eye on a bank of security cameras. He sees Melanie and Bernie meeting in a hallway and it’s obvious that Melanie’s upset with Bernie.

John allows himself to relax and enjoy the film. After it’s over, Jonathan takes the stage for a Q&A but it’s abruptly cut short. David’s disgusting secret has hit the news, and Jonathan exits the stage just as the story break. Cell phones light up throughout the theater as everyone learns about David’s sexual assaults.

Jonathan makes it backstage before having a heart attack. The paramedics are able to revive him.

Stallings phones David to see how he’s doing and to warn him not to mention his name in any interviews with cops, reporters, or John Sugar. If he does, there will be hell to pay.

The scene switches to show Stallings exiting a room in his house and closing a padlock. His thugs are hanging out in the living room and Stallings orders them to keep looking for Clifford. He’s heading down south, but they need to follow up with Melanie and find out who John Sugar is.

Stalling leaves his female minion in charge while he’s gone. She needs to guard the locked door to his “special project,” and shoot anyone who comes near it. Also, she needs to feed his two Dobermans.

John returns to his hotel room and retrieves the photos from Olivia’s suitcase. He pulls up a still from the Lorraine Everly film he just watched and compares the dress she’s wearing to the one Olivia’s mom, Rachel Kaye (Natalie Alyn Lind), posed in for the risqué Polaroids. He wonders why Bernie’s wife would be wearing that same dress 30 years after his mother wore it in a movie.

Next, he opens up Olivia’s social media and watches one of her videos. In the video, Olivia expresses her belief that the entire human race is doomed. She also confesses that someone’s been watching her. She’s scared.

As John’s trying to put the pieces together, Stallings’ right-hand woman is looking through a jewelry box. She selects a necklace with a cross…the same necklace Olivia is wearing in her last social media video!

Fallout Series Description, Courtesy of Prime Video:

Based on one of the greatest video game series of all time, Fallout is the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. Two hundred years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind—and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird, and highly violent universe waiting for them.

Ella Purnell is Lucy, an optimistic Vault-dweller with an all-American can-do spirit. Her peaceful and idealistic nature is tested when she is forced to the surface to rescue her father. Aaron Moten is Maximus, a young soldier who rises to the rank of squire in the militaristic faction called the Brotherhood of Steel. He will do anything to further the Brotherhood’s goals of bringing law and order to the wasteland. Walton Goggins is the Ghoul, a morally ambiguous bounty hunter who holds within him a 200-year history of the post-nuclear world.

These disparate parties collide when chasing an artifact from an enigmatic researcher that has the potential to radically change the power dynamic in this world.

The new trailer for Netflix’s Hit Man finds Glen Powell donning multiple disguises as a hit man who’s not really a hit man. He’s just Gary Johnson, cat owner and average dude.

But on a plot level, it’s just a guy who gets in a little too deep,” said Powell, describing the film to Netflix’s Tudum. “His passions lead him in a direction where he’s deceiving someone he’s in love with, and being someone else. They have to deal with those repercussions.”

‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’ Review

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare Cast
Alex Pettyfer, Alan Ritchson, Henry Cavill, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and Henry Golding in ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’ (Photo Credit: Dan Smith for Lionsgate)

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare has an unwieldy title that my brain refuses to recall in the right order. Fortunately, that’s the ridiculously fun action film’s only real flaw.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, or TMoUW for short, is based on the true events that inspired author Ian Fleming to create James Bond and his colorful assortment of characters. You don’t have to know this beforehand but trust me, you’ll end up Googling these crazy events that changed the course of WWII later.

England is on the brink of caving to Hitler as TMoUW begins. Only UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Rory Kinnear, Men) remains resolute in refusing to bend to Hitler’s demands. With limited options on the table, Churchill secretly creates the Special Operations Executive, the forerunner of the SAS. The tides of war can change, but only after removing Germany’s U-boats from the equation.

And now we get to the fun part, at least in the cinematic version of events.

The irrepressible Major Gus March-Phillipps (Henry Cavill, The Witcher) is put in charge of a top-secret commando unit. Gus, recognizing there’s a strong possibility the mission will fail miserably, insists on putting together his own handpicked crew. Their Operation Postmaster mission: Travel to the Spanish island of Fernando Po (a neutral territory) and sink the Duchessa d’Aosta. If they pull it off, they will crush Germany’s U-boat operations in the Atlantic.

Gus’s team of Nazi-hating daredevils includes Anders Lassen (Alan Ritchson, Reacher), a Dane with a proud reputation for dispatching his enemies in exceptionally creative ways. Explosive expert Freddy “The Frog” Alvarez (Henry Golding, Crazy Rich Asians) is a bomb-making wiz, crucial to the mission’s success. He’s fast on his feet and good at improvising when plans go south. And speaking of plans, Gus’s go-to guy is Geoffrey Appleyard (Alex Pettyfer, Magic Mike) who needs rescuing from the Nazis before the motley crew can carry out their mission.

Filling out the gang of five is Henry Hayes (Hero Fiennes Tiffin, The Woman King), the youngster of the group who’s a better navigator than any of his more seasoned cohorts.

Providing support back in England is Churchill’s trusted friend Brigadier Colin Gubbins (Cary Elwes, Stranger Things), nicknamed “M,” the leader of Special Operations. Gubbins is the one who grudgingly brings in troublemaker Gus and comes up with the wild plan to sink the Duchessa. Gubbins’ right-hand man is Lieutenant Commander Ian Fleming (Freddie Fox, Slow Horses), the liaison between Gus’s team and the SOE headquarters – and future creator of James Bond.

Gus’s squad can’t carry out their mission without a little support on the ground from British agents Marjorie Stewart (Eiza Gonzalez, 3 Body Problem) and Richard Heron (Babs Olusanmokun, Dune Parts 1 & 2). Marjorie and Heron are integral in providing up-to-date information about the Nazi movements on Fernando Po. Plus, Marjorie has the unenviable task of keeping the highest-ranking Nazi, Heinrich Luhr (Til Schweiger, Inglourious Basterds), distracted while they put the final steps of Operation Postmaster in place.

Everything’s on the line. If the mission is discovered, they’ll face jail time. Or, worse yet, those involved could face torture and death at the hands of the Nazis.

Operation Postmaster was a complicated dance in which a single misstep could have resulted in England falling into Germany’s hands. Watching the many moving parts fall into place in classic Guy Ritchie style provides a fascinating look at a crucial event that was just recently unclassified.

Guy Ritchie’s always wanted to make a World War II film and the extraordinary Operation Postmaster turned out to be the perfect melding of subject and filmmaker. The true story’s just fantastical enough to fit into Ritchie’s signature style. The action’s furious, the brutal dispatching of Nazis met with solid audience approval, and there’s an immersive feel to all the fight sequences. But best of all, TMoUW is loaded with rapid-fire dialogue, razor-sharp humor, and quick banter.

Gus and his crew are the original “licensed to kill” secret agents, though Bond author Fleming couldn’t openly mention the inspiration for his superspy. It’s not at all difficult to envision James Bond working with this elite squad to save the Crown. And speaking of Bond, Henry Cavill would be an interesting choice to fill the role. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare definitely proves he’s got the charm to handle it, and we know he can do action.

Cavill’s terrific as the leader of the elite group, all of whom relish the chance to slaughter Nazis. Cavill improvised a bit of tongue-wagging glee while blasting a room full of Nazis, a move that perfectly captures the mood when the team’s in hunting/killing mode. Alan Ritchson and Cavill exchange playful banter while Ritchson’s Anders “The Danish Hammer” Lassen uses knives, a bow and arrows, and his hands to shred his way through waves of Nazis. When he rips out a Nazi’s heart, it’s a move that’s completely in character.

Cavill, Ritchson, and Eiza Gonzalez have the showier roles, but the entire ensemble is excellent. Guy Ritchie (The Gentlemen, Snatch) and his co-screenwriters do a superb job of fleshing out all the many key players. And Ritchie gives each character, based on real people, their proper due on screen.

Certainly, Ritchie exercised artistic license in bringing the story of Operation Postmaster alive on screen. But the mission’s basics are there. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is a history lesson wrapped up in a bloody, in-your-face, entertaining action romp, delivered in a style Ritchie does so well.

‘Abigail’ Movie Review: A Vampire Film with a Clever Twist

Abigail Movie review
Alisha Weir and Kathryn Newton in ‘Abigail’ (Photo by Bernard Walsh © 2024 Universal Studios)

Times are good for directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who, along with producer Chad Villella, make up the filmmaking collective Radio Silence. Since their segments in the V/H/S movies and Southbound, the team has broken through with Ready or Not and the last two Scream movies. And here they go again with their newest fright flick, Abigail.

Abigail is about a crack group of criminals who are tasked with kidnapping a young ballerina, the titular Abigail (Alisha Weir from Wicked Little Letters), and holding her for ransom. They make it to their holding location, a deserted mansion, and just need to keep her there for 24 hours until her father pays up. Unfortunately for them, they have no idea who – or what – they have just kidnapped.

It’s not much of a spoiler to say that, yes, Abigail is a vampire. Now, vampire movies are second only to zombie movies on the staleness scale, but what Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett have done is admirable. Working from a script by Stephen Shields (The Hole in the Ground) and Guy Busick (who also helped write Ready or Not and the Scream movies for the Radio Silence boys), the filmmakers have created an entirely new type of vampire movie. Abigail reinforces the vampire tropes while still managing to subvert them.

The movie starts almost like a Reservoir Dogs type of a heist movie, with six team members who have never met (and are given Rat Pack code names) each working their specialty to pull off the caper that will make them rich beyond their wildest dreams. Once things go awry and they get locked inside the mansion, it becomes a slasher movie, with the characters being picked off one by one by an unknown enemy. And once the stalker’s identity is revealed, things get crazy.

And don’t worry—this is all pretty much first-act stuff. This isn’t spoiling anything. There are tons of cool surprises in Abigail.

Abigail seems a bit like a spiritual soulmate to Ready or Not. The whole point of the game is to survive the night. Only, instead of a bunch of people hunting one victim, one hunter is tracking down multiple prey. Things get just as bloody, though. Radio Silence does have a type, and it’s a type that they do well.

There’s a mystery surrounding the entire cast of characters. Since no one really knows anyone else, there’s an air of mistrust and suspicion that stinks up the whole situation. This paranoia just adds to the intrigue once the bodies start piling up—is it really this little girl doing all this killing? Or is one of the Rat Packers in on it? Or is it someone else entirely?

The ensemble cast of ragtag criminals, which includes Scream’s Melissa Barrera, The Guest‘s Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Lost’s Kevin Durand, William Catlett from Lovecraft Country, and Euphoria’s Angus Cloud, is terrific. Each has a different backstory with flaws and vulnerabilities, and this makes the reveals of the characters both compelling and satisfying. No one is super layered, but there’s a reason these six are put together, and finding that out is part of the fun of Abigail. Most of them feel like more than just fodder for the monster.

And then, there’s Abigail herself. As a villain, she’s perfect. She alternates between being the sweet, timid little kidnap victim and the vicious monster who wants to rip out her captors’ throats. She’s a master manipulator—cunning and ruthless, both wholesome and animalistic. And willing to leave a trail of bodies in her wake.

As a horror movie, Abigail sticks pretty close to the Radio Silence motif of suspense over jump scares. The shock factor in the movie is provided by its sheer brutality and graphic violence. And buckets of blood. There are no cat scares in Abigail (although there is one rat scare), just a whole lot of gooey carnage. But it is more subtle than your average gore-fest. It’s just a cruel and mean-spirited movie. And it works that way.

Abigail is a breath of fresh air, both for vampire movies and for modern horror in general. It’s also self-aware enough to realize this, with references to both ancient vampire myths and Twilight. In short, it’s a Radio Silence vampire movie. Next up for the collective is a requel/re-imagining of John Carpenter’s Escape from New York. Sounds like a recipe for disaster, but Radio Silence is known for pulling rabbits out of hats. The horror world will be watching.

“After the shocking, Continent-altering events that close out season three, the new season follows Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri who are faced with traversing the war-ravaged Continent and its many demons apart from each other,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “If they can embrace and lead the groups of misfits they find themselves in, they have a chance of surviving the baptism of fire and finding one another again.”

Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, Tania Lotia, Rae Benjamin, Troy Dangerfield, Matthew D’Ambrosio, Javier Grillo-Marxuach, Clare Higgins, and Mike Ostrowski write season four. Sergio Mimica-Gezzan, Tricia Brock, Alex Garcia Lopez, and Jeremy Webb direct the penultimate season.
