From Emmy Award winner Dick Wolf, FBI: Most Wanted is a high-stakes drama that focuses on the Fugitive Task Force, an elite unit that relentlessly pursues and captures the notorious criminals on the Bureau’s Most Wanted list. The team’s charming but formidable leader is Supervisory Special Agent Remy Scott, who started his career in the New York FBI field office before rising through the ranks of the Bureau in Philadelphia and Las Vegas.

The team includes Special Agent Sheryll Barnes, a former NYPD detective and forensics expert who is raising two young children with her wife; Special Agent Hana Gibson, a gifted millennial computer whiz with a sharp wit and mad hacking skills; Special Agent Ray Cannon, who is a former New Orleans cop-turned-junior detective and worked Violent Crimes in Albany after following in his retired FBI agent father’s footsteps.

Review: ‘Monkey Man’ Starring and Directed by Dev Patel

Monkey Man Dev Patel
Dev Patel is Kid in ‘Monkey Man’ (Photo Credit: Akhirwan Nurhaidir © Universal Studios)

Oscar nominee Dev Patel poured his heart and soul into Monkey Man, and his unwavering commitment resulted in a film that masterfully blends adrenaline-pumping action with thought-provoking social commentary. Patel’s feature film directorial debut hits an occasional rough patch, but when it’s firing on all cylinders, it’s incredibly entertaining.

It’s hard to believe that the same Dev Patel who made his breakthrough in Slumdog Millionaire has now become a badass action star. The opening scenes introduce his character, Kid, as a brawler wearing a gorilla mask, his hidden face serving as a punching bag in an underground fight club. Winning isn’t his goal; earning cash is why he is in the ring. The more blood that flows from his beaten body, the higher the payment he receives from the club’s owner, Tiger (Sharlto Copley).

Kid’s battered in the ring, but it’s nothing compared to the trauma he has endured at the hands of the city’s corrupt leaders who’ve murdered the poor and stolen their land. Patel and co-screenwriters Paul Angunawela and John Collee weave in flashbacks to fill out Kid’s backstory, justifying why he is obsessed with exacting revenge against Police Chief Rana (Sikandra Kher).

To that end, Kid finagles his way into a job at the elite King’s Club, run by Queenie (Ashwini Kalsekar). The city’s sleaziest powerbrokers frequent the establishment, with politicians and religious figures mingling with drug dealers and human traffickers. The cops follow Chief Rana’s lead, turning a blind eye to the illegal activities and handling security at this den of iniquity.

While continuing to mentally and physically prepare to kill Rana, Kid rises through the ranks from dishwasher to waiter in the King’s Club’s exclusive penthouse. It’s there that Kid puts his plan for vengeance into motion. His first attempt on Rana’s life is unsuccessful and places a target on Kid’s back.

Even as he recovers from his fight with Rana and the intense escape that followed, his mission remains clear. Kid’s body is beaten, but his spirit is not, thanks to Alpha (Vipin Sharma) and his transgender community. Alpha’s spiritual guidance and Kid’s memories of his mother’s stories of the Hindu deity Hanuman motivate him to continue his fight against those who oppress the poor and powerless.

Dev Patel does a fantastic job in front of and behind the camera. Monkey Man is an outstanding directorial debut for the popular actor who grew up obsessed with action films. Patel’s appreciation for the genre is obvious in every frame of Monkey Man, with references to John Wick and nods to the fury of Bruce Lee, Oldboy, and The Raid.

The first-time helmer delivers a powerful gut punch with this bloody, R-rated revenge thriller. Flashbacks of horrific violence against the persecuted by the malevolent ruling class provide the justification for Kid’s vengeance. He’s on the side of the righteous, using his skills as a fighter to take down the corrupt police and those they protect. Thanks to Patel’s terrific performance, the rage Kid feels is palpable and radiates off the screen.

The action scenes are gritty, gory, and inventive. Pots, pans, serving dishes, and even toilets are lethal weapons in Kid’s hands. The one-on-one fight sequences have such an intense and furious pace that even as an audience member, they will leave you breathless. And the third act of Patel’s Monkey Man is a thrilling spectacle, with the action intensifying to a frenzied climax.

The setting is specific, but the message is universal. As Patel has explained, Monkey Man touches on faith, trauma, politics, and identity. It’s also an effective, brutal rebuke of the caste system, wrapped up in a wildly entertaining action film to make it more palatable.

‘The First Omen’ Review: Better Than a Shot-For-Shot Remake

The First Omen
Nell Tiger Free as Margaret and Nicole Sorace as Carlita in ‘The First Omen’ (Photo © 2024 20th Century Studios)

Over the almost fifty years of its existence, The Omen franchise has been a rollercoaster. The original The Omen was terrifying. The sequel, Damien: Omen II ventured a bit into Final Destination territory but still had its chills and thrills. Omen III: The Final Conflict went truly crazy yet still remained a horror film, while the television movie Omen IV: The Awakening bordered on the absurd with its unintentional hilarity. And then, in 2006, The Omen received the 21st century’s badge of horror honor/shame – the pointless shot-for-shot remake.

Now, the series is attempting a bounce-back with The First Omen.

Just as its title suggests, The First Omen takes place before the events of The Omen. Set in 1971, the story revolves around a young American nun-to-be named Margaret (Nell Tiger Free from Game of Thrones) who is sent to Rome to work at a church orphanage before she takes her final vows. While there, she meets a troubled young girl named Carlita (Summer Limited Edition’s Nicole Sorace). Carlita reminds Margaret a lot of herself at that age, and so, Margaret immediately forms a connection with the child. That connection leads to a crisis of faith…and a horrible discovery about the girl.

With help from co-writers Tim Smith and Keith Thomas, writer-director Arkasha Stevenson manages to pay homage to the original The Omen trilogy while also expanding upon and further explaining the mythology behind those classics. By no means does The First Omen reinvent the wheel, but it does inject some fresh blood into what has, after fifty years and five other movies, become a bit stale and predictable.

Because it is a direct prequel (it literally ends where The Omen picks up), the viewer pretty much knows where things are going, but Stevenson does throw in a handful of keen surprises to keep audiences on their toes. The most impressive aspect of what Stevenson does is how she creates a ’70s aesthetic for the film. From the production design and costuming to the camera work and music, The First Omen feels like a classic period horror flick.

And there is no shortage of callbacks to the original The Omen, from specific scenes that are quoted verbatim to the presence of the character of Father Brennan (played by The VVitch’s Ralph Ineson). Best of all, the callbacks are done organically. It may ultimately be fan service, but it doesn’t feel like it in the moment.

The biggest flaw in the film involves its pacing. The story is divided neatly into three parts. The first part, which basically introduces the characters and sets the scene for what’s coming, drags on a bit too long. However, once the movie transitions into its second act, it becomes an Omen movie, and that’s where the fun is. The meat of the movie, and all the carnage contained therein, is a blast.

Unfortunately, the third act is where things start to fizzle out. The plot shows its hand a little too early when it comes to the big twists, and from that point, everything seems to grind to a halt. With a runtime of about two hours, an easy twenty minutes could be shaved off of the film, and most of that fat is in the third act.

To its credit, The First Omen doesn’t rely on cheap jump scares to shock its audience. Of course, the cheap jump scares are there, but they’re not nearly as effective or frightening as the creepy atmosphere and subtle tension that Stevenson builds over the course of the movie. This is not your father’s Omen movie – it even ventures squarely into the realm of Cronenbergian body horror at times – but it’s also not the typical modern BOO-fest.

Despite its weaknesses, The First Omen is a fun little entry into the series’ lore. It’s no competition for the original 1976 movie, but what is? It’s still way better than a shot-for-shot remake.
