Netflix’s teaser for trailer for Below is just that—a teaser. There’s something in the water but what? Watch the minute-long video and you still won’t know the answer, which is precisely how teasers are supposed to work.
The six-episode limited series stars Josh Hartnett as Calvin Penney, Mackenzie Davis as Fonda Howander, Charlie Heaton as Wade Penney, Ruby Stokes as Mary Penney, Kaleb Horn as Noah, Rohan Campbell as Jay Penney, and Willow Kean as Ruth Penney.
Netflix’s synopsis reads, “Calvin Penney is a big-hearted but stubborn fisherman living in a small Newfoundland town who’s still haunted by his father’s mysterious death from decades ago. When an unidentified sea creature begins terrorizing his hometown, Calvin must fight to hold his close-knit community together. Determined to keep his son Wade and the rest of his family safe, he teams up with a visiting marine researcher to confront the creature and reveal the island’s buried secrets before it’s too late.
Blending local myth, thrilling suspense, and heartfelt humor, this twisty six-part limited series dives into themes of family, community, and change—both terrifying and inevitable.”
Commenting on the limited series’ appeal, Hartnett told Netflix’s Tudum, “I read the first two scripts so quickly, in less than an hour. […]The voice was so clear, the concept was so engaging, and the character was fantastic. I’d never read anything like it before.”
Jesse McKeown created the series and serves as showrunner and executive producer. Additional executive producers include Jessica Rhoades, Chris Hatcher, Josh Hartnett, Jamie Childs, Louise Sutton, and Sharon Hall.
