Chucky took a hiatus during season three when the writers and actors went on strike last year. Only four new episodes aired in October, but after the strike ended Chucky finished the season and it’s back on April 9th. When we last left Jake (Zackary Arthur), Devon (Bjorgvin Arnarson), and Lexy (Alyvia Alyn Lind), Chucky had dropped a chandelier on the guests at a White House Halloween party. The audience also got to see that Chucky was aging, even in his doll form.

Arthur was at the NBC Universal party for the Television Critics Association in February. We got to catch up with him on Jake and Devon’s relationship and future battles with Chucky. Chucky airs Wednesdays at 10pm ET/PT on both Syfy and USA.

How are Jake and Devon when we come back?

Zackary Arthur: “We’re secure and we’re developing as a couple.”

Is it fun to be playing a teen romance story amid all this crazy violence?

Zackary Arthur: “It’s a beautiful moment for the characters that despite all the craziness and all the shit that Chucky’s caused, we’re still trying to develop our lives and be with each other despite Chucky trying to ruin our lives.”

How old were you in season one?

Zackary Arthur: “I was 13/14.”

Has each season mirrored your childhood?

Zackary Arthur: “It’s strange because I’ve grown up about three, four years on the show. It’s great working on something that everyone is so passionate about, and it makes me so happy that I get to be part of something like that with my life and the time I’m putting into it.”

Do the human parts of the story reflect your growing up as well as Jake’s?

Zackary Arthur: “Yes, you can see elements of that in season two where Jake is being very remorseful and guilty over the death of his foster brother, Gary. These kids have gone through so much trauma. It affects them in so many ways. These kids are just trying to have a normal life.”

Where does episode five pick up in the White House and with the kids?

Zackary Arthur: “We pick up right after the chandelier has fallen. Pandemonium is ensuing and really the team has to regroup right now. The three amigos have to regroup. Now that we’ve seen this, we have the whole moment with the President and his son, there’s some mystical stuff going on so picking up right after that.

If you thought episode four was crazy, episode five was crazy. Then if you thought episode five was crazy, it just keeps getting better and better and better until it’s amazing what we’ve done, especially with episodes five through eight. The whole show but the way it builds is beautiful. That is thanks to Don and the writers, and the wonderful directors that we’ve had to work with.”

I did think they were crazy, and it keeps getting bigger.

Zackary Arthur: “It keeps getting better, so we all just have to watch.”

Is old Chucky more or less formidable than young Chucky?

Zackary Arthur: “Well, now that Chucky’s older, now he’s got maybe less to lose. He’s trying to take everybody out. We’ll see what his plan is for what he’s going to do. I guess he’s got less to lose.”
