‘Cobra Kai’ Season 3 Interview: Xolo Maridueña on Miguel and the Season 2 Finale

YouTube Premium’s Cobra Kai season two ended with a brutal fight at the high school between members of the Cobra Kai and Miyagi dojos. The fight resulted in Miguel (Xolo Maridueña) seriously injured, leaving fans to worry about the character’s fate.

Xolo Maridueña joined his fellow Cobra Kai cast members Ralph Macchio, William Zabka, Tanner Buchanan, and Mary Mouser at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con. Maridueña’s appearance at the Con seemed to indicate Miguel will survive and remain an important part of the series. However, Maridueña played it cagey during out interview on the red carpet at the Entertainment Weekly Comic-Con Bash.

How long is Miguel going to be injured? What’s going on?

Xolo Maridueña: (Laughing) “I wish I knew. I know just as much as you.”

They have to have told you something.

Xolo Maridueña: “No, no. I know that we have the third season and that’s it, capiche? You know, when Ralph was at the panel the other day and he said that he was going to Okinawa, that was the first time that I had heard it. I promise you everything is under wraps. But I will say no matter what, personally as Xolo – and this isn’t canon – I personally think that I will be okay. But I’m not too sure.”

You have to be okay. They wouldn’t be bringing you to Comic-Con if Miguel was going to die.

Xolo Maridueña: (Laughing) “But maybe it’s a bluff. You know what I’m saying? But, we’ll see. It might be some Jedi mind trick.”

Have you been keeping up your training, just in case it’s not a Jedi mind trick?

Xolo Maridueña: “So, I wish that I can say that I have been. It’s summertime and I just graduated from high school, so I took a big long break. But we film next month so this next month we’ll be definitely going hard.”

Are you shocked at how many people absolutely love your character and think he’s the breakout star from season two?

Xolo Maridueña: “Having this role means so much to me. This franchise in itself is something that means so much to so many people that by getting to just be a small part of that means the world to me. But, you know, I think the character Miguel is a super important character in regards to him and Johnny. The bond that they have really starts to show up and for that I’m very grateful.”

Can we expect any changes in relationships between the main characters in season three? Do you think they’re going to throw anyone else into the mix just to shake things up?

Xolo Maridueña: “Our writers always do something very clever. You know, like last year it was Tory and there were a couple of other characters brought in. I don’t know but if I were to guess, I feel like I hope so. I mean they teased Elisabeth Shue at the end of season two and they’re talking about they have the ghost in the little can and whether or not that gets released we’ll see in season three. There’s definitely room; there’s always room. Nothing is ever out of the cards.”

Do you think Miguel holds a grudge against Johnny for training him which ultimately led to this horrific injury?

Xolo Maridueña: “You know what? Something that I’ve always said is that as the person who portrays Miguel I never…his number one priority is Johnny. Coming into season one he was yearning for this fatherly figure and he found that with Johnny. And you see at the end of season one the length that he goes to impress and make him proud. I think that no matter what they’ll have this bond and I really don’t think that it will be broken.”

What do you think about the relationship between Miguel and his mom? What’s going to happen since she didn’t want him to continue to fight?

Xolo Maridueña: “I think that we’ll see at the beginning of the season – again I have no clue what’s going to happen – I think the leash will start to get tighter, so to speak, when it comes to hanging out with Johnny Lawrence if at all. But my hope is the chemistry that Johnny and Miguel has is unparalleled so it’s always my wish for them to be together because I feel like they have the best chemistry in the whole show.”
