The night passes and Jon Snow’s men remain surrounded, with even more White Walkers having arrived. Thoros, unfortunately, passed away in the night. Beric prays to the Lord of Light while The Hound drinks from Thoros’ bottle. Jon Snow snatches the bottle away and pours the alcohol on Thoros’ dead body. Beric again prays to the Lord of Light as he burns Thoros so he won’t turn.

Jorah and Jon Snow walk to the side and have a quiet talk. They both realize they’ll freeze soon and Jorah wants to know why killing one White Walker made all the ones who followed him die. They deduce that if the White Walker who turned them dies, they all die.

Beric is sure he and Jon Snow are meant to kill the Night King in order to kill all the White Walkers. Beric’s on his last life and since Jon Snow was also brought back for a reason, this must be why they’re still alive.

At Winterfell, Sansa receives an invitation to King’s Landing. She instructs Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) to go in her place, unwilling to make herself a prisoner of the Lannisters. Brienne doesn’t believe it’s safe leaving her with Littlefinger, believing Littlefinger has plotting behind Sansa’s back. Brienne wants to leave Podrick behind but Sansa is dead set in sending Brienne off to King’s Landing immediately.

All three of Daenerys’ dragons prepare to fly off as Tyrion tries to convince Daenerys to not do anything to help Jon Snow and his men. “Sometimes nothing is the hardest thing to do,” he says, believing it’s too dangerous. “If you die, we are all lost,” he adds.

Daenerys refuses to do nothing ever again and flies off with her children to save Jon Snow and his men.

The Hound throws a rock at a White Walker and then tosses another. This time the rock misses and lands in front of the White Walker on the ice. Since the ice didn’t break, the wight figures out it’s safe to walk forward across the frozen lake. A few others also step out toward the island as Jon Snow’s men prepare for battle once again. They fight the first few that approach the island and then it’s a stampede. Jon’s men are vastly outnumbered but continue to battle.

Jorah saves Jon but the odds are so against them; it appears to be only a matter of time before they all fall. Jon Snow yells for them to fall back, but Tormund falls and is dragged toward an opening in the ice. The Hound rescues him at the last minute but there’s nowhere to run. They continue slicing and dicing the White Walkers all while it seems they’re on the losing side of a fight against thousands of wights. Just then the dragons and Daenerys arrive, burning the wights and sending others fleeing. As they scatter, Daenerys continues to light them on fire.

Drogon lands and four of the remaining men make it onto his back. Jon Snow, however, remains on the ground as the Night King approaches. The Night King heaves a spear at Viserion and the dragon falls dead, sinking into the icy depths of the lake. Daenerys and the men watch the dragon sink and watch Jon Snow continue to fight his way toward the Night King. Jon Snow yells at Daenerys to leave as he’s attacked and forced into the lake by wights. He sinks as the Night King prepares to throw another spear. Drogon soars away as the spear misses, leaving Jon Snow behind either dead or nearly so.

The Night King approaches where Jon Snow sank as Jon Snow emerges from the water and grabs Longclaw. Once on the ice, he gasps for breath. Nearly frozen, he gets to his feet and then faces the horde of White Walkers as they run toward him. Benjen rides up on his horse, killing White Walkers as he races toward Jon. Benjen sends Jon Snow off on his horse and remains behind to face the wights with a fiery lantern. Jon looks back and watches as his Uncle Benjen is overrun by White Walkers.

The Hound, Jorah, Beric, and Tormund make it to the Wall with the wight. As Drogon soars above, Jorah tells Daenerys it’s time to leave but she refuses and instead watches out for Jon Snow from the top of the Wall. Just as she turns away, an alarm sounds that there’s a rider approaching. Daenerys looks overcome with emotion as she sees Jon Snow barely alive slung over the back of a horse.

The men strip Jon Snow of his icy cold clothing to warm him and Daenerys sees all the many stab wounds he suffered at the hands of the Night’s Watch traitors.

Back at Winterfell, Sansa enters Arya’s room and finds her satchel. She pulls out many faces as Arya arrives and asks, “Not what you’re looking for?” Sansa, frightened, asks what they are and Arya simply says, “My faces.” Arya explains she trained in Braavos to be a Faceless Man. She tells Sansa about the Game of Faces they played in Braavos and Sansa doesn’t want to play but Arya plays anyway. Sansa avoids answering when Arya asks how she feels about Jon Snow being King. Sansa again demands to know what the faces are, and Arya says Sansa wanted to be a Queen while she wanted to be a Knight and go to battle. She uses the faces to choose what she wants to be. Sansa, tears in her eyes, realizes what her sister is capable of. Arya threatens her sister, saying she can even become Sansa and transform into the Lady of Winterfell. Arya picks up her dagger and says she just needs Sansa’s face to find out what it feels like. She then hands Sansa the dagger and leaves the room.

Jon Snow and the men sail back to Dragonstone, with Daenerys at Jon’s bedside. He apologizes for the death of her dragon and Daenerys takes his hand. He wishes he could take it back and that they’d never gone beyond the Wall, but Daenerys knows if they hadn’t gone, she wouldn’t have seen the White Walkers. The dragons are her only children but she declares, “We are going to destroy the Night King and his army. We will do it together. You have my word.”

Jon Snow thanks her, calling her Dany. She says the last person who called her that was her brother, which isn’t the company he should keep. He understands and instead calls her His Queen, agreeing to bend the knee. She asks about those who swore allegiance to him and he says they will see her for what she is. They hold hands and she says, “I hope I deserve it.” Jon Snow assures her she does. When she tries to pull her hand away, he holds on. Finally, he lets go as she tells him to get some rest.

The White Walkers use chains to bring up the dead body of Viserion who is now revealed to have the icy blue eyes of the dead.
