In case you were unaware, the teaser trailer for Netflix’s Griselda is quick to point out that the limited series comes from the creative minds behind Narcos. The 40-second video concentrates the action in one room, with a dark and gritty color palette helping deliver the teaser’s ominous vibe.
Four-time Emmy Award nominee Sofia Vergara stars as the titular character in the six-episode series inspired by the life of Griselda Blanco. Per Netflix: Blanco “created one of the most profitable cartels in history. In 1970s-80s Miami, Blanco’s lethal blend of unsuspected savagery and charm helped her expertly navigate between business and family, leading her to become widely known as ‘the Godmother.'”
Joining Vergara are Alberto Guerra as Dario Sepúlveda, Christian Tappan as Arturo Mesa, Martín Rodríguez as Rivi Ayala, Juliana Aidén Martinez as June Hawkins, and Vanessa Ferlito as Carmen Gutiérrez.
Eric Newman, Doug Miro, Ingrid Escajeda, and Carlo Bernard created the series and serve as executive producers. Sofia Vergara also executive produces along with Latin World Entertainment’s Luis Balaguer and Andrés Baiz (Narcos and Narcos: Mexico showrunner and directing team with Eric Newman). Baiz directed all six episodes, and Escajeda and Miro are the co-showrunners.
“Griselda Blanco was a larger-than-life character whose ruthless but ingenious tactics allowed her to rule a billion dollar empire years before many of the most notorious male kingpins we know so much about,” stated Vergara when the project was announced in November 2021. “We are thrilled to have found the perfect partners in Eric, Andrés and Netflix to help us bring this story of her life to the screen.”
Netflix has set a January 25, 2024 premiere date.
