The action in CBS’s Marshals episode nine picks up seconds after the end of episode eight, with the team pinned down and under fire. They attempt to establish better positions but are outmanned and outgunned. Their only option is to retreat, for now.

(The following is a recap of episode nine, “In Low Places,” and there are spoilers.)

Kayce (Luke Grimes) is against the decision, but remaining in the field outside Clegg’s main house without any backup is suicide. They set up in a barn not too far away and Kayce establishes a sniper position. He sees 10 well-armed men behind a brick wall as Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) refuses to listen to Belle (Arielle Kebbel) beg them to take a minute to think this through.

It’s obvious that kidnapping Andrea was meant to lure them to Randall Clegg’s compound – and it worked. Belle believes Clegg recruited men from all over, including the four the team shot at the rodeo grounds. Belle’s going to loop in other law enforcement because they need their own army to go against Clegg’s people.

Cal grabs a position next to Kayce as they check out who they’re up against. There are a lot of men with guns, and they’re dug in, indicating they’ve been prepared for a while. Kayce blames himself for what’s happening since Clegg’s hated the Duttons for years.

A pregnant woman steps into the room where Andrea’s being kept and places a pink dress around Andrea’s neck. Andrea realizes the women will be used as human shields.

The team’s boss, Harry Gifford (Brett Cullen), is on his way along with FBI assault teams that will perform the rescue. Kayce’s not happy they won’t be running point. At this point the team’s sole purpose is to collect intel and pass it along to the FBI teams. Kayce suggests that they ask Garrett for help, because his recon skills are exceptional. He wants Cal to deputize Garrett and let him be useful. Cal’s worried Garrett will make the wrong call, and Kayce points out he’s never been wrong “outside the wire.”

Belle interrupts Cal as he’s about to secretly take a pill, worried that Cal’s head is elsewhere. She thinks Cal and Kayce are too stuck in their memories of war, but now they must be in sync with her and Miles to help Andrea.

Kayce joins them with a laptop that’s got Clegg livestreaming to his followers. He claims he was forced to defend himself against the government after they stole his livelihood and killed his son. Agents invaded his land and now he needs to take a stand, along with his allies.

Gifford arrives with FBI Special Agent Woods, angry that Cal’s team let the Cleggs build a compound in their territory. Cal disagrees, pointing out it was the FBI or the ATF’s job of tracking that sort of activity.

Clegg won’t respond to negotiators, and the assault team is 90 minutes out.

Garrett (Riley Green) arrives and Cal’s not happy about it. Kayce introduces him to Gifford as a consultant, and Cal assures Gifford he’s just there to help prep for a rescue mission.

Belle’s discovered Clegg has a daughter, Stacy, who doesn’t associate with the family. She might be helpful since she knows the layout of the compound. Cops retrieve her and Belle asks for her help, but she refuses. It’s not until Belle explains that she also clawed her way out of a terrible situation that Stacy provides some answers.

Garrett believes Clegg dug tunnels under his property in case they need to escape. It would make sense because he’s a demolitions guy. If they can find a tunnel, they can sneak into Clegg’s house and set up a camera. Kayce and Garrett want to search the grounds and promise to stay invisible. Cal agrees but warns them not to make contact.

Andrea (Ash Santos) manages to free herself and uses her dad’s knife that she’s always got with her to attack a man who enters the room. She knocks him out and grabs his gun and phone before making her way slowly upstairs. Andrea gets to a spot inside with cell service and calls 911, telling them to stay on the line and listen. (She doesn’t know anyone on her team’s cell numbers by heart.)

Cal keeps an eye on Kayce and Garrett, letting him know he’ll lose sight of him in 20 meters. Kayce and Garrett sneak closer to camp, deciding to forget about looking for tunnels.

Andrea almost makes it outside but is grabbed and pulled back in. Kayce notices the movement just as Cal informs him there are two armed suspects patrolling near him. Kayce gives Garrett a gun as they approach, but fortunately Miles (Tatanka Means) fires a few shots to distract them from Kayce’s location.

Belle, Gifford, Woods, and Cal are patched into Andrea’s 911 call, and she hasn’t spoken yet. They can’t pinpoint the phone’s location, but Stacy said the video was shot in the house’s basement. Kayce and Garrett return and report that only a few men are patrolling the side of the property.

Belle notices Cal keeps acting like his neck hurts, but he won’t explain what’s going on.

The 911 line is still open, and they hear Clegg (Michael Cudlitz) confronting Andrea about her escape attempt. Andrea does a fantastic job of mentioning what she can see without letting Clegg know what she’s doing. He assures her she won’t come out of this alive. To make his point, he kills the man she attacked and left alive.

The team realizes Clegg is determined to kill Andrea and they need to make a move now. Stacy provided the location of the yellow room and spruce tree that Andrea described. Plus, the camera Kayce set up confirms there still aren’t many guards in the back.

Gifford wants Cal to de-escalate and allow the FBI team time to get on the scene. Apparently, the president has been watching the livestream and is upset about optics. Woods threatens to turn the FBI helicopter around and disavow any involvement in this operation. The sole blame will fall on Cal and his team for acting rashly.

Cal doesn’t care, and Gifford asks for a rifle to cover them as they move in. He wants Andrea back alive and calls her the best of them.

Kayce asks Cal to arm Garrett and let him help. Cal very reluctantly agrees. But then Kayce thinks Garrett’s acting a little shaky and sends him back to Gifford’s location to cover their backs. Cal agrees that’s the right call.

Andrea is strung up, hands above her head and gagged.

The team approaches and Kayce runs into a shed that’s full of dynamite. He quickly rigs an explosive and tells Cal to enter the house when it goes off.

The explosion causes the guard watching Andrea to walk too close to her. She makes her move, sitting on his shoulders and then choking him out. She almost makes it outside, but he recovers and hits her in the head, pulling her back in.

Kayce’s about to enter the same door the team entered when he spots a bloody handprint at the base of a different door. He enters that way instead as the team engages in a shootout inside the house. Kayce follows blood spots and is jumped by the guard with Andrea but manages to shoot him.

Cal, Miles, and Belle find Clegg holding a gun to his own head and recording a video. Cal shoots him in the shoulder instead of killing him. They place Clegg under arrest and force him to radio his men to stand down.

Kayce finds Andrea, cuts her loose, and thankfully she’s okay. He’s still working on freeing her when she grabs his gun and shoots a man sneaking up on them.

Cal walks out with Clegg in custody and Kayce confronts him, saying, “I really wish my father was still around so he could see Montana rid itself of the Cleggs.” Clegg warns him that his legacy is growing and his family has blossomed after today’s events.

Andrea thanks her team for fighting for her, and Cal thanks Garrett for his help. Cal and Garrett have a private chat, and Cal admits the death of their fourth musketeer still haunts him too. But it’s even more difficult to accept the chasm that formed between him and Garrett.

Gifford admits to Kayce that what he thought was recklessness in him was actually fearlessness. Kayce doesn’t react and Gifford explains he’s offering an olive branch. Kayce thanks him for having their backs and shakes his hand.

That night, Kayce hosts the team at East Camp. Garrett looks at Kayce’s medals and Kayce confirms it was Monica who framed them for display. Kayce never talked to her about what they did out there. He apologizes to Garrett for what went down and that he got pulled from the action. Garrett misses having teammates and jokes that’s why he’s not leaving East Camp.

Andrea asks Garrett (nickname Double G) to play for her, and he suggests they move out under the stars. Belle hangs back with Cal and asks about his neck again, assuring him he can tell her. He won’t.

Garrett plays guitar and sings “My Way” (Riley Green’s new song) around a campfire as the team chills out and shakes off the traumas of the day. Kayce wanders away and Andrea follows him. He asks if she made it to the door when she was in the house, and he explains that he had a feeling she did even though he didn’t see her. They talk about the stars and although she’s not sure about Montana, she’s glad she’s on a team with him.
