Buckle up Mayans M.C. fans, season five episode five – “I Want Nothing But Death” – is loaded with WTF moments, not the least of which is a fight to the death. EZ takes action to end the discussion of a rat, and Angel’s revealed as carrying a deep, dark secret that could end the Santo Padre club as we know it.

And now the recap:

FX’s Mayans M.C. season five episode five begins with Bishop (Michael Irby), Angel (Clayton Cardenas), and Hank (Frankie Loyal) in a car, with prospect Nestor (Gino Vento) driving. Angel’s in the back passenger seat as the designated shooter and fires a single shot from his rifle at Sons of Anarchy San Bernardino and their friends hanging outside a Bunny Scoops Ice Cream shop.

One member is hit and falls dead.

Angel’s congratulated but doesn’t appear to be in a celebratory mood.

Back at the clubhouse, Bottles (Alex Barone) is on guard duty when three Grim Bastards South Gate charter ride up, including the club’s president. Bottles alerts the guys, and EZ (JD Padro) confronts the trio, believing Charming sent them. The tension eases a little as the Grim Bastards’ President, Lucky, talks to EZ about the war. It’s not good for any club, and it’s bringing heat to everyone’s business – even those clubs not actively involved in the war.

Lucky offers to negotiate a deal between the Mayans and SoA. Lucky points out the Mayans and the Bastards have a history, and EZ reminds him they don’t know each other. And EZ is leery of anything involving psycho Isaac. Lucky hints that Isaac might not be a factor much longer and extends his hand to shake.

The scene ends before EZ responds.

Miguel (Danny Pino) rolls up next to Angel on the street and informs him they need to talk. Pulling off in an out-of-the-way area, Miguel drops the bombshell news that he watched a videotape from the warehouse and knows Angel set the fire that destroyed the heroin! Miguel doesn’t know why, but he does know that Angel is a dead man walking if he shares his secret.

In exchange for his silence, Miguel wants Angel to get EZ to stop cooking heroin and trying to ice out the cartel. Miguel believes that if EZ backs off, he can get Soledad to bring the Mayans back into the fold.

Bish’s got the table laughing as he delivers a colorful description of the Bunny Scoops Ice Cream hit. The mood shifts when EZ arrives and Angel addresses the table. He loves his brothers in the club – those still around and those who’ve passed – but he never signed up to be a drug dealer. He believes taking on the cartel is crazy. “This has to stop,” says Angel.

The table’s silent and finally EZ acknowledges he doesn’t want to lead by dictating what the club does. He empties a bag of cash in the middle of the table and passes out shares while dispensing wisdom about war. “The most moral thing that we can do is annihilate those who wish us harm, by any means necessary,” says EZ.

He leaves it up to the club how to move forward. Bishop’s satisfied with the cash, and no one joins Angel in speaking out against dealing heroin. Hank asks about the Grim Bastards’ offer, and EZ asks Bishop for his opinion since he knows Lucky.

Bishop confirms Lucky is a standup dude, and Hank also believes if Lucky says something, he means it.

EZ’s satisfied Lucky’s legit and says they’ll head to LA tonight.

Hank’s the last one at the table, and EZ asks about his mom. She’s settling in, but Hank admits this cash will help her out a lot. EZ also asks about the rat, and Hank says Creeper’s close to learning his identity.

And that discussion sets up the next scene of Katie (Stella Maeve) meeting with Creeper (Joseph Raymond Lucero) in jail. Katie reveals she’s no longer an agent and fills him in on Kevin Jimenez. Jimenez’s death is a “scary big” case and Creeper asks nicely (he even says please) for the CI’s identity. Katie replies, “EZ Reyes.”

Creeper laughs and refuses to believe her. Katie assures him she did thorough research and she’s certain it’s EZ. She also reveals EZ and Jimenez are cousins. “It’s all on tape. I heard it myself,” says Katie.

Creeper continues to doubt Katie’s word, but she reminds him that no one gets out of jail early after being convicted of killing a cop – as EZ did. Creeper ends their visit early, still unwilling to accept what Katie discovered.

Creeper tells the guard he needs to see to Smoky (Aaron Abeyta).

Angel visits Sofia (Andrea Cortes) in EZ’s trailer and asks how things are going with his brother. Sofia refuses to be drawn into a conversation about EZ, but Angel really wants to know what’s up with his little brother. He reminds her how horrible Lobo’s death was, and that EZ needs to be convinced to stop cooking heroin now. Angel believes EZ will listen to Sofia if she asks him to quit.

Angel confesses he thinks EZ’s going to get everyone hurt – including her. Sofia wants him to leave and Angel’s so distressed, so confused, that he says he should have burned this place down too. He leaves without answering when she asks what he means.

Meanwhile, Deputy Assistant Inspector General of the Division of Investigations Patricia Devlin (Dana Delany) is paid a visit by her boss, and after small talk about her tiny office, he cuts to the chase. Potter’s people told him to put her on a leash, and Patricia learns the order came from “as high up as can be expected.”

This makes her want to take a deeper dive into Potter’s affairs, and her boss warns her she’s poking around a very powerful, very protected individual. He knows it’s useless to ask her not to do her job but suggests she be careful or they’ll both wind up unemployed.

She’s unfazed by threats and is making her first move today.

Elsewhere, Potter (Ray McKinnon) is busy laying into Soledad and Miguel for having Eduardo murdered after he told them to make a peace treaty with him. Potter reminds them it’s all about reining in the chaos and killing Eduardo isn’t how you accomplish that.

Soledad insists Eduardo broke their deal first, and Potter realizes Miguel held back information. Potter informs Soledad that the Mayans hit the cookhouse, not Eduardo, but Miguel insists they don’t know for sure.

After Soledad stalks off, Potter reminds Miguel that he owns him. He can take everything away from him again if he steps out of line.

Marcus’ family is attending a birthday party for Maggie’s granddaughter in the park, and Marcus (Emilio Rivera) remains distant from the group. Once he spots Bishop approaching, he orders his family to leave. Marcus ignores Bishop and takes off without saying a word to his old friend and Mayans brother.

Maggie and Bishop have reached the point in their relationship where it’s time for Bishop to meet her son, Richie, the father of the birthday girl. Bishop’s handed the one-year-old birthday girl and is obviously moved when she settles into his shoulder.

Creeper meets with Smoky, the man who ordered the hit that put him in the hospital. Smoky respects that Creeper made it back out into the yard, but he no longer has any use for the Mayans. However, he reveals that his cousin JJ and EZ served time together, but EZ got out early. After he got out, JJ reconnected with EZ and had a plan to do right by his family. He was going to press EZ, but JJ suddenly disappeared.

Smoky confirms EZ is the rat.

Seconds later, a guard tells Creeper he has a visitor. And, of course, the visitor is EZ. Creeper hugs him but doesn’t meet his eyes as EZ assures him he’ll continue to take care of him and put money in his books.

Creeper finally looks up and reminds EZ that they made him a king, but he’s actually just a rat. EZ believes he’s taking the club higher than it’s ever gone before, and brothers have died to get to where they are now. If anything happens, those brothers will have died in vain.

Creeper thinks his brothers died for EZ’s lies and that his own life has been thrown away for EZ’s lies. He believed in EZ, and EZ requests that he believe in him just a while longer. Creeper refuses to back down and threatens to burn everything of EZ’s down.

EZ grabs Creeper but makes it appear as though Creeper’s the instigator and aggressor. EZ’s on his back on the ground, arms around Creeper, holding him to his chest, and yelling, “Get off me! Help me!” when the guards begin ruthlessly beating Creeper. Creeper cries out that he didn’t touch EZ as the batons continue to strike him on the head and back.

Elsewhere, Patricia Devlin pays a visit to the Galindo estate and speaks with Miguel, informing him that the DOJ spends over $43,000 a month on this property. But that’s beside the point. What she really wants is to learn more about his relationship with Potter. If he tells her everything she needs to know, she promises he’ll be a free man in time for Cristobal’s wedding.

Given that Miguel’s not currently in jail, he isn’t impressed with this offer. But Patricia insists that a trigger’s being squeezed, and he needs to decide “which side of the barrel” he wants to be on. She claims what she’s offering is a chance for him to keep his family.

The Mayans gather for the meeting brokered by the Grim Bastards, and as Lucky pats down EZ he advises him to limit contact with Isaac. Lucky wants this meeting to go smoothly.

The showdown begins as the Mayans assemble in a room across from SoA, with Isaac (JR Bourne) the only one casually seated in a chair. A few feet separate the two clubs, with Lucky and the Grim Bastards standing watch.

Isaac seems a little shocked that EZ’s such an imposing presence, wondering how he can look so confident since he’s currently on the losing side of the war. Isaac knows the Mayans have aligned themselves with Iron War and calls EZ a pussy.

“We are prepared to accept your full surrender. We will continue to wear the California patch, and the Sons will shut down their San Bernardino chapter immediately,” says EZ.

Isaac is unimpressed and calls out for Coco. Bishop reminds him SoA shot Coco dead in Oakland. Isaac appears genuinely stunned by the news.

EZ recites his offer again, and Isaac briefly ignores him, saying he was looking forward to reuniting with Coco. He then points out the scar Coco gave him on his neck and is upset that he’ll never be able to repay him.

Isaac warns EZ to stop talking and tells him he’s bored, but EZ doesn’t let up. Isaac wonders what he’s crashing toward and asks, “Is it you?”

Finally, the Mayans have had enough, and a brawl almost breaks out before Lucky gets the situation back under control. Lucky reminds them they agreed to no violence, but Isaac declares he’s not leaving until someone dies. He suggests pitting his best against the Mayans’ best and selects a large brute to take on whoever EZ chooses.

Lucky tries to shut the meeting down, but they ignore his order to disperse.

EZ tells his men that he promised to bleed for them and steps up as the Mayans’ representative. The fight begins and EZ is getting the crap beat out of him until suddenly the momentum shifts. EZ takes control and repeatedly bashes his opponent’s head into the ground.

EZ spits blood onto the ground in front of Isaac and repeats his demands.

Isaac replies, “It is you,” as he and the SoA exit the meeting.

Santo Padre makes it back to their clubhouse and after EZ showers, Sofia helps him to the clubhouse. They briefly pause before entering, and Sofia says she has something to tell him about Angel.

We don’t hear the rest of their conversation, and instead, the scene shifts to EZ and Sofia entering the clubhouse to cheers. The Mayans pound tables and chant, “EZ,” as EZ acknowledges their respect before locking eyes with Angel.

The chants of “EZ” continue but now we see Creeper back in his cell, seated on the floor.

Season five episode five ends with Isaac and a minion sneaking into Coco’s home in the dead of night. Isaac places his hand over Letty’s mouth before she can scream. He believes she looks like Coco, except for her nose, and as Hope’s brought into the room (struggling to get away), Isaac informs Letty that she’ll pay for what Coco took from him.

Letty’s going to have to do something for Isaac, but the credits roll before we learn exactly what Isaac wants.

Wow, what a crazy, heart-pounding, surprise-laden episode! Easily one of the best episodes of this season.
