Apple TV’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season two, episode six, begins just one day before the attempt to bring Cate back from Axis Mundi. Kong notices Kentaro (Ren Watabe) sketching him and sends him running with a growl. Hiroshi (Takehiro Hara) catches Kentaro sneaking out of the restricted area and Kentaro shows his dad his sketchbook filled with the island’s creatures. Hiroshi’s impressed and asks to keep one of his son’s drawings of Kong.
(The following is a recap of season two, episode six—”Requiem”—and contains spoilers.)
Hiroshi doesn’t think time works the same in Axis Mundi and that two years may not have passed for Cate. He confesses he went into a rift after G-Day and that’s why he disappeared for a year. To him, it was a day or two. To the world, it was a year later. Hiroshi didn’t tell his son earlier because he wanted to protect him.
Hiroshi admits working with Kentaro to retrieve Cate has made him happy.
The action moves forward to Hiroshi’s funeral and Cate (Anna Sawai) apologizes that Kentaro didn’t get to say goodbye to their dad. She confesses she doesn’t know what compelled her to stand on the dock and face Titan X. Kentaro doesn’t trust Cate and wonders when Godzilla will show up to clean up her mess.
Lee (Kurt Russell) is shocked when Dr. Suzuki pops in to pay his respect. Suzuki’s equally stunned to reunite with Keiko (Mari Yamamoto), who doesn’t look any older than the last time he saw her decades ago. Suzuki reveals he and Hiroshi had kept in touch and invites them to come with him back to Hateruma. Lee thinks it might be a great way to pass the time until they locate Titan X.
Lee hangs back at the gravesite and says, “I’m gonna find a way to set things right. I promise.”
May (Kiersey Clemons) shows up at Kentaro’s door after the funeral, unsure whether she’s welcome. She hasn’t talked to Cate yet, and Kentaro suggests they go out for a drink. They walk and chat, and Kentaro recalls the simpler times when he just hung out in whiskey bars. They head to an old hangout and toast to Hiroshi.
May tries to make him feel good, but Kentaro misinterprets her actions and attempts to kiss her. After she rejects him, he points out it’s Cate she’s interested in, not him. A young woman sees May leave and takes her spot, flirting with Kentaro as they watch G-Day footage at the bar. She lets it slip that she knows he’s seen a Titan and is forced to confess she’s Walter Simmons’ daughter, Isabel. (Simmons is the creator and CEO of Apex Cybernetics.) Kentaro leaves, angry he’s being stalked.
A Titan alert goes off as Kentaro walks home, and Titan X is seen in the waters off the coast of Japan. Kentaro’s mom, Emiko, catches up with him in the streets just as Godzilla tosses something large into a nearby building. People run for their lives, and some are crushed by falling debris. Kentaro spots May and grabs her as they race down the street. Cate appears, claiming everything’s fine just as Titan X and Godzilla face off in the city streets.
Fortunately, it’s just a dream and Kentaro wakes up out of breath. He gives his mom a hug and then heads to the cemetery. He calls Isabel and tells her to prove him wrong.
Meanwhile, Keiko, Cate, Lee, and Suzuki share a meal and discuss Project Hourglass. Suzuki thinks they’re lucky the rift didn’t kill all of them since they didn’t know about time dilation back then. His reputation was ruined and his inventions destroyed. But then Hiroshi came and asked about his Titan phone and wanted to build a new one.
Lee snags a minute alone with Suzuki and reveals he wants to call Godzilla. Suzuki’s his only hope of getting in touch with the Titan. Hiroshi inspired Suzuki to invent something new that could be used to lure a Titan away from a city. It didn’t work when he built it, but that was before he learned about the time difference. If he can calculate the difference between our world and Axis Mundi, it should work. And he needs to know when the last sighting of Godzilla occurred.
Cate and Keiko spend a quiet moment outside, dangling their feet in the ocean. Suddenly the water around Cate’s feet ripples and Keiko realizes that’s the same movement that happens when a Titan is nearby. Cate says it’s been happening since she let Titan X out. Keiko asks Cate to tell her everything, and Cate’s relieved to know she’s not going crazy.
Keiko and Cate catch Lee and Suzuki just as they’re heading to the rift on Mount Osore to test Suzuki’s new device’s capabilities. It’s only then that Keiko realizes Lee wants Godzilla and Titan X to fight. Lee thinks Suzuki’s machine can determine the time and place of the fight. Although they promise not to open another rift, Keiko and Cate are angry Lee wants to use Godzilla as an attack dog.
“It’s us versus them, Kei. And in the end, only one thing matters – who wins,” says Lee.
The following day Cate and Keiko investigate the ripples, with Keiko hoping it’s a way to locate Titan X. To get a good reading, Cate needs to get further into the water than just her feet. Cate’s frightened of what might happen, but Keiko promises to be there for her. Cate is fully submerged when Keiko hears Titan X and quickly records it.
She plays Cate the sound and Cate believes she hears fear and panic in its cries. Cate’s sure Titan X is lost.
Lee and Suzuki make it Mount Osore and Suzuki needs to readjust how the machine works, which means Lee needs to get closer to the rift. It’s dangerous, and Suzuki admits he doesn’t know what the worst thing that could happen is.
Lee’s in place and Suzuki activates his machine. The rift becomes active and Suzuki picks up an anomaly on his machine. Lee asks if it’s Godzilla, but Suzuki isn’t sure. Suzuki loses control of his machine, killing the power as Lee is pulled toward the rift. Shutting it down doesn’t stop anything and Lee’s sucked closer to the edge.
The activity calms down before he’s pulled in, with just pulsating lights shooting up from the rift. Suzuki confesses his machine’s readings don’t make sense. Neither understands what just happened. Lee’s radio crackles and he hears static and a voice. When he asks who it is, the reply stuns him. “This is Major Leland Lafayette Shaw III. My crew is dead. My vehicle is damaged. My food has run out. Control, I need an extraction,” says the younger Lee.
It’s Us vs. Them
Monarch HQ, Arlington Virginia 1958 – Bill (Anders Holm) and Keiko show up for their first day at the new office and Bill credits Keiko’s photos with being the impetus behind the new Monarch outposts on three continents. Lee (Wyatt Russell) joins them in full uniform and there’s a weird moment between Lee and Keiko that Bill doesn’t notice. Lee toasts to the couple, certain that it will be because of them that the world remains safe.
Bill feels something’s off and Lee admits he’s been reassigned to General Puckett’s staff. (He asked to be.) He’ll be relocating to Maryland and thinks the move is best for all of them. Bill and Keiko reluctantly join him in a toast to Monarch.
Lee visits his father, Colonel Leland Lafayette Shaw II, who he hasn’t seen in five years. They’ll be stationed at the same place, and the senior Shaw wants to celebrate with a drink. Colonel Shaw wonders why Lee left Monarch and guesses it had to do with a woman. Lee confesses it was Keiko, the most brilliant person he’s ever met. His dad believes he did the honorable thing by stepping aside.
Lee wakes up, hungover, and rushing to avoid being late to report to General Puckett. His dad intercepts him and insists they grab some breakfast. Two hours later, Colonel Shaw finally confesses he got Lee transferred to MAAG Vietnam. (MAAG is Military Assistance Advisory Group.) It’s the only assignment that will get Lee an advancement and help his career.
Lee insists he’s faced monsters across the globe, but that doesn’t impress his dad. Lee claims Monarch is trying to discover how the Titans operate, but again, Colonel Shaw isn’t impressed. It’s all about who wins in the end, not about understanding these monsters.
Lee’s shown to his new office, pissed about being reassigned. He tosses a lamp around when the electricity doesn’t work.
Days later, Lee visits Keiko at her office and she’s sorry she didn’t try to make him stay. Lee admits that Monarch is too important and he needs to forget his personal feelings. He wants his job back and Keiko’s happy he’s back on board. She shows him a map of a location in Kazakhstan where the Soviets were forced to cordon off 100 miles. Keiko’s sure something’s going on there.
