Netflix’s Scooby-Doo: Origins has found its titular star. For the first time in Scooby-Doo history, a real dog will play the four-legged goofy character. The streamer just made the announcement and released the first photo of the adorable canine taking on the starring role.
The series’ four-legged lead joins Mckenna Grace (The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping) as Daphne Blake, Tanner Hagen (The Pitt) as Shaggy Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson (Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret) as Velma Dinkley, and Maxwell Jenkins (Lost in Space) as Fred Jones. Paul Walter Hauser (Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere) also stars.
Netflix describes the series as “a modern reimagining of the iconic mystery-solving group of teens and their very special dog. During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder. Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma, and the strange but ever so handsome new kid, Freddy, they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.”
The live-action series will premiere on Netflix next year. Filming is currently underway in Atlanta.
Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg are serving as writers, executive producers, and showrunners. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, Adrienne Erickson, and Toby Haynes.
