The news of S.W.A.T.‘s cancellation by CBS and the announcement that the sixth season finale would be the last episode came as a shock to everyone. Even series star Shemar Moore was taken aback by the decision, as the police drama had increased its ratings over season five.

“The last two years, we’ve been killing it… We’ve done nothing wrong. We’ve done everything that was asked for,” said Moore in an Instagram post.

Fans also expressed their outrage over the decision on social media, and apparently CBS is ready to admit they were wrong.

“We have listened to our viewers and their outpouring of passion for S.W.A.T. and we have reached an agreement to renew it for a final season of 13 episodes to air during the 2023-2024 broadcast year,” stated Amy Reichenbach, President of CBS Entertainment, and Katherine Pope, President of Sony Pictures Television Studios. “S.W.A.T. has aired for six seasons on CBS and garnered a devoted following. We are pleased that we found a way to bring it back and give closure to the show’s storylines and characters, which audiences deserve.

Once again, we appreciate the talents and efforts of the cast, writers, producers, and crew and everyone who has contributed to the success of S.W.A.T.. We look forward to its return next season.”

Shemar Moore will be an executive producer on the 13-episode final season.

Unfortunately, True Lies and East New York have not escaped the ax. True Lies will wrap up season one – and the series – with episode 13, “Waking Dreams,” airing on Wednesday, May 17, 2023. East New York‘s first season will also be its last, concluding with “Ruskin Roulette” on May 14th.
