‘The Patient’ Trailer: Steve Carell’s Captured by a Serial Killer

FX just unveiled the official trailer for The Patient, a limited series starring Oscar nominee Steve Carell (Foxcatcher) and Domhnall Gleeson (Run). The 10 episode series is described as a psychological thriller, and the trailer reveals Gleeson’s playing a serial killer with Carell as the unfortunate therapist he’s chosen to tell his secrets to.

The cast also includes Linda Emond, David Alan Grier, Laura Niemi, and Andrew Leeds.

The Patient comes from Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, the creative minds behind the award-winning The Americans, which wrapped up in 2018 after airing for six incredible seasons on FX. Fields and Weisberg write and executive produce, with series star Steve Carell, Caroline Moore, Victor Hsu, and Chris Long also executive producing.

The Patient premieres on August 30, 2022 on Hulu.

Here’s FX’s official description of the limited series:

The Patient is a psychological thriller from the minds of Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg about a therapist, Alan Strauss (Carell), who’s held prisoner by a patient, Sam Fortner (Gleeson), who reveals himself to be a serial killer. Sam has an unusual therapeutic demand for Alan: curb his homicidal urges.

In order to survive, Alan must unwind Sam’s disturbed mind and stop him from killing again… but Sam refuses to address critical topics, like his mother Candace (Emond). Alone in captivity, Alan excavates his own past through memories of his old therapist, Charlie (Grier), and grapples with waves of his own repressed troubles – the recent death of his wife, Beth (Niemi), and the painful estrangement from his religious son, Ezra (Leeds).

Over the course of his imprisonment, Alan uncovers not only how deep Sam’s compulsion runs, but also how much work he has to do to repair the rift in his own family. With time running out, Alan fights desperately to stop Sam before Alan becomes complicit in Sam’s murders, or worse – becomes a target himself.”
