Netflix wants more of Ryan Murphy’s The Watcher and Murphy’s anthology series, Monster. The streaming service renewed both shows for second seasons as DAHMER – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story moves within striking distance of 1 billion viewing hours.
“Audiences can’t take their eyes off Monster and The Watcher,” stated Bela Bajaria, Head of Global TV, Netflix. “The creative team of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan on Monster along with Eric Newman on The Watcher are masterful storytellers who captivated audiences all over the world. The back-to-back force of these two series is due to Ryan’s distinct original voice which created cultural sensations and we are thrilled to continue telling stories in the Monster and Watcher universes.”
The renewal announcement did not include details on either series’ second seasons. Monster will tell the stories of other monstrous figures who have impacted society, but the focus of season two wasn’t disclosed. Likewise, Netflix didn’t confirm if season two of The Watcher will follow the new residents of the Westfield, New Jersey house who were introduced in the season one finale.
DAHMER – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story split critics (it currently sits at just 62% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) however Netflix subscribers gobbled it up. According to Netflix, DAHMER is the seventh most viewed streaming program in the US in a single week. Plus, it ranked first on Nielsen’s weekly streaming chart for three consecutive weeks.
Evan Peters took on the titular character in season one of Monster. The cast also included Richard Jenkins as Lionel Dahmer, Molly Ringwald as Shari Dahmer, Michael Learned as Catherine Dahmer, and Niecy Nash as Glenda Cleveland. Guest stars included Penelope Ann Miller, Michael Beach, Colby French, Shaun J. Brown, Mac Brandt, and Grant Harvey.
Season one of The Watcher focused on a family who moved into a gorgeous house only to discover their new home was the target of increasingly frightening letters sent by an anonymous person who called themself “The Watcher.” Bobby Cannavale, Naomi Watts, Jennifer Coolidge, Mia Farrow, and Margo Martindale starred. Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan, Eric Newman, Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, Bryan Unkeless, Paris Barclay, Naomi Watts, Ariel Schulman, Henry Joost, and Scoop Wasserstein executive produced.
