For many fans, Tracker is Justin Hartley’s follow-up to This Is Us, save for an appearance on Quantum Leap. Now that Tracker has been on for a season, it has also introduced us to the ensemble cast. Fiona Rene stands out as Reenie, a lawyer who sometimes helps Colter Shaw (Hartley) with his bounties. They also have palpable chemistry.
Rene attended CBS’s party for the Television Critics Association this summer. I caught up with her to discuss Reenie and Colter’s will they/won’t they chemistry. Tracker returns for a second season on Sunday, October 13, 2024 at 8pm ET/PT.
Fiona Rene Tracker Season 2 Interview
Does Reenie have a real will they or won’t they tension going on with Colter?
Fiona Rene: “I mean, the tension is high. We know that. But I think that the love there is so authentic. You know how the Greeks had seven different kinds of love. I think it’s exciting to figure out through the next few seasons what kind of love Colter and Reenie actually have because it could be one of any of those. But with Russell coming into play, it’s like, ‘Okay. Okay, maybe,’ you know.”
So, there might be a triangle?
Fiona Rene: “I wouldn’t be mad. I don’t think the viewers would be mad.”
Since Tracker is #1, do you want to prolong that romantic tension even longer?
Fiona Rene: “Of course. I think the goal is to stay #1 as long as we possibly can, so I think that also has to mean that there’s going to be a slow burn to a lot of the relationships. Just like any relationship, if it just goes boom, it fizzles out just as fast. If we can really build it, maybe there will be more longevity with the whole thing.”
Is Reenie the one shutting that down for now?
Fiona Rene: “I don’t know. I think he’s just as hard-headed as she is. They both have a lot to lose. Both of them have thick, hard armor. So, I wouldn’t say it’s just her. No way.”
He was asking her out at the end, and she was keeping it professional.
Fiona Rene: “Yes. I mean, I wonder also with me having a flirtation with [Colter’s brother] Russell, if that went into play with Colter because the minute you have something that’s just dangling around, it’s like, ‘Oh, I don’t want that.’ But the minute that that thing starts to leave, it’s like, ‘Wait a minute.’ So, I don’t know, maybe it’s that. Maybe because Reenie knows that she may not trust him as much. But I don’t know, I don’t think she’s still fully opposed. I think the doors are always open.”
Does their professional relationship have just as much chemistry?
Fiona Rene: “Yes, 100%. I think that their romantic or physical flirtatious relationship has more trust and grounding because they respect each other professionally so much.”
Justin said they have so much story between Colter and Reenie they wouldn’t even have time to tell it all. Are you privy to that future story?
Fiona Rene: “I think he knows way more than me. I feel like I’m the last to know anything. I read a script and I go, ‘Oh wow, that’s what’s happening? Cool. Let me find a backstory to put that.’ That’s all I can really give you. All I know is that a lot of the guest stars are coming back. That, I think, can create some threat or the opposite for Reenie and Colter. You know, with Billie coming into the picture, ‘Excuse me, ma’am.'”
You did a lot of episodic appearances in your career. Is this series lead a long time coming?
Fiona Rene: “Man, it feels like it, huh? For me, it feels like it, and it’s kind of a dream to think. My 13-year-old self is like, ‘Oh my God, did we finally get there that we have a good stability in this career?’ But who knows? I like both. Playing Glory Days on Lincoln Lawyer over three seasons but episodic was one of the coolest jobs I’ve ever had in my life, so I hope that doesn’t ever go away. But this feels nice to have some stability for sure.”
Both Lincoln Lawyer and Tracker are based on books. Is Reenie in The Never Game books?
Fiona Rene: “I don’t know. I think she might be in two but I purposefully did not read anything prior to going into the audition because I wanted it to be me. I think some of the time, the worst thing an actor can do is try and become someone else or imitate something else that they see so I tried not to read anything.”
Do you know anything else to be excited about season two?
Fiona Rene: “I’m excited to see how Velma blooms because I think we’re going to see a lot of her and discover a lot about her identity that is not connected to her relationship with Teddi. I think that’s really, really exciting.”
